  • Episode 06: Income Disparity

    Episode 6 - Income Disparity

When Australia’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) released their gender pay gap report on 27th of February 2024 it sparked a lot of discussions around gender pay gap & income disparity.

But that's only half the story, there is often the hidden side of income disparity that no one sees, often goes unnoticed and not talked about.

Income disparity in relationships; where one party earns more than the other and, in some cases, where one partner is the sole bread winner and the other partner does not have any income at all. This is often the case when women decide to have children. The affect that this can have on many relationships often remains behind closed doors and not talked about in the public.

In this episode we aim to lift the lid on that as we tackle this often very private subject head on by looking at income disparity in our relationship and how it has affected our relationship but also what we've done to address this prickly situation.

  • Episode 02: Money & Me (Part 2)

Money Story - Our Collective Story

This is part 2 of a 2-part series called “Money & Me” where we dive into the world of our money stories. These are the narratives that define our relationship and perspective on money, encompassing our upbringing, experiences, influences, and attitudes towards money.

In this episode we reflect on the highs and lows, the trials and triumphs as we merge our distinct paths and individual money stories to craft a new and shared narrative together – our story.

Crafting a new collective story is often overlooked in our individualistic society where the mentality of “I do me” and “you do you” prevails and is often carried into marriage. This is particularly true when it comes to money. Whilst it’s important that each individual is able to express and be who they are, we must not to under estimate the power and importance of crafting a shared narrative together, particularly in a marital relationship where, as cliché as it sounds “two becomes one”.

But we don’t just want you to listen to our collective story. We’re sharing our stories to inspire you to explore and articulate your collective story. Here’s how you can begin by discussing these three questions with your partner:

    • How has your upbringing and experiences influenced the way that we view money?
    • What are some differences and similarities in your money stories?
    • What compromises have you made or do you need to make in your collective story?

Practically, there are heathy practices that you can adopt together as a couple to help you be more cohesive and united with your management of money.

    • Regular check-ins on your budgets and bank accounts
    • Transparent with your income and expenses
    • Open communication with each other – willing to be transparent and talk about money and to not avoid it

  • Episode 01: Money & Me (Part 1)

Our money story - What is it? and why does it matter?

We often underestimate the complexity of a union between 2 individuals in a relationship who have spent a majority of their lives and formative years apart. We each have our own unique stories and with it, we bring baggage, experiences & values that may not always align with one another.

One story which we often don’t talk about is our individual money stories, which is the narrative that defines our relationship and view of money and includes things like our upbringing, experiences, influences and attitude towards money.

It’s important we know our money story because it impacts our values and decisions as well as the baggage we carry into a relationship. By understanding our own stories, we are able to craft what we call “our story” which is the story that you will begin to write in your relationship together.

This episode will be released in 2 parts. In Part 1 which is today's episode, we're delving into the depths of our money story, exploring how our individual journeys intersected to shape our shared financial narrative as a couple.

Then in our next episode, we will continue our money story by reflecting on the highs and lows, the challenges and triumphs, and ultimately, how we've merged our distinct paths to craft a new chapter together – our story.

We don’t just want you to listen to our individual stories, but we’re sharing our stories to encourage you to learn and articulate your individual money story. You can do that by asking yourself and or each other these 3 questions

    • What are your earliest memories or experiences with money?
    • How did our upbringing and family dynamics influence our view towards managing money?
    • How did your perspective on money evolve over time, and what factors influenced those changes?

By answering honestly and reflecting on these 3 questions, you’ll begin to articulate your individual story and identify what defines your own relationship with money.
