‘Had we actually gone ahead and gone into a programme of implementation planning seriously and implementation, those targets that NDP was talking about would've been achieved. We have reversed. We don't have electricity; we don't have any order,’ says Pali Lehohla, director of the Economic Modelling Academy and former statistician-general.
‘We might not get everything you want at this table, but let's actually be clear on what we want and what we should all be fighting for is access to technology and access to financing that will allow our industries to thrive,’ says TK Pooe, senior lecturer at the Wits School of Governance.
‘The wins don't have to be spectacular. This isn't about building a power station. It's about getting water to a school. It's about fixing traffic lights on a series of intersections. Those small wins then start to become the stuff of celebration,’ says Adrian Saville, professor of economics, finance and strategy at Gibs.
‘All our members who may be participating in this strike, they must know it’s not sanctioned by us. Therefore, we're not going to take responsibility for their action. We have implored them to go back to work and that has been our stance,’ says Samwu national general secretary, Nkhetheni Muthavhi.
‘I think it suffered a significant setback over the last six or seven years due to the conduct of Busisiwe Mkhwebane as the head of that office. It's going to take a great deal of work by the incoming Public Protector to restore public confidence in that office,’ says Lawson Naidoo, executive secretary for the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution.
