  • His Sermon, My Story #16 -- Matthew 6:19-24 -- Unstuffing our hearts...

    Send me a Text Message!

So this episode, isn't current. I didn't preach at Calvary last week, I was visiting my mom and dad and celebrating my niece's wedding. In fact, might even be on my way home as you listen to this. So this isn't actually last weekend's sermon at Calvary, but in the past I have preached on Matthew 6:19-24. It is a crucial passage, so here is a message I gave from a couple of years ago. It hits the themes of generosity and simplicity and how those practices will help us get our hearts ready for home... AND ready to thrive now!

So we are keeping the rhythm of back and forth between Matthew 5 and Matthew 6. The next episode will get us back to the beatitudes.

  • His Sermon, My Story #15 -- Matthew 5:1-6 -- Are you hungry for life?

    Send me a Text Message!

In the last episode we ended with the question, "What is righteousness?" Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. So what is righteousness? That's a key question right? I know what food is and I hunger for it. I know what success is, I have hungered for it, along with friendship and affirmation. But what is this righteousness that we should hunger for?

We're going to deepen our definition of righteousness as we look at the beatitudes as not just a listing of eight different blessings, but as a pathway, a process for finding a life that thrives, a Kingdom-Life. So are you hungry for life? If you are, let's dive in!

  • His Sermon, My Story #14 -- Matthew 5:1-6 -- Are you satisfied with what you have?

    Send me a Text Message!

The beatitude for today is, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be satisfied." So the question that I will ask us is "Are you living a satisfied life?" Are you satisfied with what you have? But for the purpose of the notes here, I'm going to print the prayer I close with, just in case you want to pray for more than you have.  It's a prayer from A. W. Tozer; the response of a heart with a deep longing for God.

O God, I have tasted Your goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am  ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want you. I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Your glory, I pray that I may know You indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me.  Say to my soul ‘Rise up my love and come away.’ Then give me the grace to rise and follow You, up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Oh and...in episode #11, I called us to a season of fasting and prayer. In my weekly newsletter I included a guide for this season. If you would like it, and don't get my weekly email, you can email me at [email protected] ---

  • His Sermon, My Story #13 -- Matthew 5:1-5 -- Are you seeking meek?

    Send me a Text Message!

Jesus' mountain-top message is a blueprint for a life that thrives. And as I’ve been studying it this time around, I’ve also run into a number of pastors and theologians who think of the Sermon on the Mount as basic training for people heading into a spiritual battle. Knowing what his followers were going to face in the days and years to come Jesus took them on the mountain and said, “This is how you fight my battles.” Blessed are the meek. Not much like any battle strategy we’d consider on our own, but I believe it’s crucial to understanding how we need to respond to the spiritual battle in our days. And there is a spiritual battle taking place!

So the question for this episode is, "Are you seeking meek?"

  • His Sermon, My Story #12 -- Matthew 5:1-5 -- Mighty are the meek?

    Send me a Text Message!

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth! Be honest, when is the last time you prayed for meek? Are you seeking meek? What comes to mind when you paint a picture of meek? Well meek is weak right? Blessed are the weak for they shall become the doormats of life and everyone will walk all over them. In fact Webster defines meek as TOO submissive. Blessed are the spineless, for they never stick up for their rights. Blessed are those who never take a stand. Webster calls them spiritless and deficient in courage. But Jesus calls them blessed.

Perhaps as much or maybe even more so than a heart that leans toward mourning today, we need a heart that leans towards meek. But maybe, meek is a bit different from what we think? Maybe it really is true, mighty are the meek.

  • His Sermon, My Story #11 -- Matthew 6:1-21 -- Are you hungry for something more?

    Send me a Text Message!

Hey Folks, for those of you who download early, sorry this is coming a little bit late. It's the message from yesterday (Sunday) on Matthew 6 and it's all about fasting. Fasting focuses our hunger on Jesus. Fasting is a humble cry for Jesus. Fasting is a hopeful cry for more.

But I also believe that there is a sense of urgency that fasting brings, that is desperately needed in our times. We need a heart that urgently desires more God, now, for us and others! We are hungry for more, sometimes we just don't realize it.

  • His Sermon, My Story #10 -- Matthew 5:1-4 -- God give me tears...

    Send me a Text Message!

Have you ever asked God to give you tears? There is so much pain and suffering and brokenness in the world today. But do we mourn for the brokenness? Perhaps we need to pray that God would help us be tenderly moved.  When we die and stand before Jesus and he asks us, "How did you feel about the suffering around you?" What will you say? Jesus felt enough cmpssn for Jerusalem to weep. He wept for every broken person in Jerusalem. He wept for their loss. He wept for people broken by sexual sin and financial greed. He wept for people who didn't love their neighbors and wept for hearts filled with unforgiving bitterness. He wept for people missing God's dreams for their lives.

Blessed are those who mourn? Perhaps we need to ask God for tears.

  • His Sermon, My Story #9 -- Matthew 5:1-4 -- Don't quit, you might not be so far from blessing!

    Send me a Text Message!

When Jesus showed up, on that mountain-top, the people who gathered around were going through a time of deep darkness. While some Jewish leaders  experienced an element of prosperity and security, most of them were politically, religiously, and economically oppressed by the Roman Government. High taxes, religious restrictions, crucifixions were common. Most people knew someone who had been crucified. And then Jesus shows up.  Remember the report from the last part of Matthew 4? Jesus is proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom; healing people, exhibiting the power of God and telling people about the blessings of heaven breaking on earth. And the news spread and crowds gathered.

There were crowds of people who had been broken and experienced loss and given up hope. People who wondered if God was gone and how far they were
from the blessed life and I think Jesus was telling them, "Don't quit, you are not so far."

  • His Sermon, My Story #8 -- Matthew 5:1-3 -- I am broken...and blessed?

    Send me a Text Message!

Blessed are the poor in spirit, the desperate, the broken. That's Jesus' first step to the blessed life. Blessed are those with open hands because they have nothing in them. That's hard stuff.  It's not easy for me to hear.  But do you know who this is good news for? This is good news for those who are broken and desperate; for those who just don't know where to turn anymore.  I have good news for you. You are so close to a life that thrives on God's blessings. Don't try to hide your brokenness just because the world can't see that it's the first step on a path to true life. Surrender to the King. Open your empty hands and receive heaven's blessings.

I am broken and blessed? Well if not yet, you are so close!

  • His Sermon, My Story #7 -- Matthew 5:3 -- What is the blessed life?

    Send me a Text Message!

As we dive into the beatitudes, we immediately run into the word "Blessed." The word is used 9x's in the first 11 verses of the Sermon on the Mount. The Living Bible translates it, "fortunate, or happy."  Eugene Peterson in The Message uses the word "lucky."  What is the essence of lucky?  It's getting something you don't deserve.
In the Greek language, the word blessed is the word makairos.

How do you describe, the blessed life? Makairos? What 2 or 3 things would you like to happen in your life, where if they happened, you would consider yourself "makairos."  Blessed? What is the blessed life? (And how do we get it?)
