There's just too much good stuff in Psalm 37 to let it go with one episode. So here we are again. But this time, we'll take some time pondering our place in the land. God wants to give us the land...but the land is for the meek. Meek? Anyone looking for a little more meekness in their life? Meek isn't weak, it's strength under control. Let's go for meek!

And again, we come upon a Psalm that contains a favorite verse. Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." There are so many good things in Psalm 37, but in this episode, we're going to focus on a few practical experiments that could help us "delight in God."

One of my favorite verses in the Psalms is Psalm 34:8, "O taste and see that the Lord is good." I love the immediacy of that tactile description. Taste. It's not enough to watch others taste, take it in and chew on it. BUT this episode will put together two seemingly opposite actions. Taste his goodness and fear the Lord. They go together, they really do. So listen up as we talk about fearing God.

Eugene Peterson has said that every language—including the language of prayer—is learned, and through the Psalms we learn the language of prayer. But here’s what I love about prayer steeped in the Psalms. When we read or listen to the Psalms before we pray, we let God have the first word. Prayer should always be the second word. We come to God with our ears, before we come to God with our lips. Psalm 33 gives us an opportunity to be reminded of the power of God's Words!

Psalm 27 begins with fear, but ends with courage and hope. “Why are you not afraid?” the psalmist asks. And the answer... I will not be afraid because in the darkness, God is my light. I will not be afraid because in the battle, God is my fortress. I will not be afraid because when trouble comes looking for me, God will hide me in his sacred space. I will not be afraid because my heart has heard his invitation and I’m coming to his table. I will not be afraid because even if those closest to me abandon me, God will hold me close. This is a great Psalm for those in need of courage!

If I could give one and only one gift to the church today, it would be hard to choose, but certainly I would have to ponder long the gift of integrity. To come to those moments in life when you know you need God more than you know; to be able to stand in those times in the shadow of David and say, "Vindicate me O Lord for I have walked in my integrity." Oh how we are in deep need of integrity today! Psalm 26 leads us to ponder the journey of integrity!

What do you think of when you think of "clean hands and a pure heart?" Psalm 24 suggests that without them, we cannot come into God's presence. The King of Glory has invited us to come...and here's the good news. He's made a way for us to come!

In a consumer-driven world filled with Amazon delights, here is a statement that turns everything upside down. "When the Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need. When Jesus is my shepherd, I lack nothing." I don't lack rest. I don't lack strength. I don't lack courage. I don't lack victory. I don't lack a seat at His table. I have everything I need for life, because I have Him!

Do you know what I hear when I read Psalm 23? I hear, "The best is yet to come." Isn't that what David is describing? Even though I walk thru the valley of the shadow of death... God's goodness pursues me and I will live in his house forever. The best is yet to come. And the best is yet to come, because God invites us into a life that is blessed beyond belief. And where does it begin? It begins with rest and restoration!

In this 113th episode of "More Than Bread," we are diving into one of the most remarkable and prophetic psalms found in the Book of Psalms. While it begins with a cry of anguish and desperation, it transitions into a powerful expression of trust and ultimately points forward to the suffering and victory of Jesus Christ on the cross. It’s a lament that leads to glory and a reminder that even in hard times, we hope!
