After more than three decades in the making, Tim Hortons said its iconic roll-up-the-rim-to-win contest will undergo a major revamp next year after sales fell in the latest quarter, and the retailer faces backlash from environmentalists over its disposable cups. A big part of refreshing the promotion that runs annually from February to April will be to move it online, according to its parent company Restaurant Brands International Inc. But, how will customers react to a shift away from rolling up the rim of a physical cup to win a prize?

Local rose expert honoured in New York by Bette Midler

Brad Jalbert is a rose hybridizer, grower and expert from Select Roses in Langley, BC, and he recently returned from New York City where he was recognized for his work with roses at the New York Restoration Society Picnic. For the occasion, Jalbert created a rose for the founder of the New York Restoration Society, Bette Midler. Jalbert created the rose and named it ‘The Divine Miss M’, which Midler praised as a “knockout”.

Brazilian gang leader Clauvino da Silva 

Authorities say a Brazilian gang leader tried to escape from prison by dressing up as his daughter when she visited him behind bars and walking out the penitentiary's main door in her place.

But prison officials say the nervousness displayed by Clauvino da Silva, also known as ``Shorty,'' as he tried to leave the prison in the western part of Rio de Janeiro dressed as a woman gave him away.

His plan was apparently to leave his 19-year-old daughter inside the jail. 

Police are looking into her possible role as an accomplice in Saturday's escape attempt.

Rio's State Secretary of Prison Administration released photos Sunday showing da Silva in a silicon girl's mask and long dark-haired wig, wearing tight jeans and a pink shirt with a cartoon image of donuts.
