“Tabulation anomaly” blamed for errors on student transcripts in B.C.

BC's education ministry says a "tabulation anomaly" means some graduation high school students were left with much worse marks on their transcripts than the ones they actually earned.

The error may have affected thousands of students who took the provincial exams in June -- exams that significantly impact applications to post secondary schools.

The Ministry is now in the process of reviewing each and every exam result.

In a statement, UBC says they’re aware of the issue, and are making sure “that if there has been an administrative error in data reporting that it doesn’t have a negative impact on any of our incoming students.”

Granville Island business owners hitting back at leasing practices of their landlord, the CMHC

Business owners on Granville Island are hitting back at some of the leasing practices by their landlord, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation - the CMHC.

In a report by the Tyee, some of the operators there are warning that the area is becoming gentrified, and they want control of the decisions there taken away from the CMHC, and given back to the artists and businesses who they say are best-placed to protect the character of the area.

Pernilla Ahrnstedt is a Jewelry Maker who works out of Aurum Argentum a retail and studio space. She told Lynda Steele yesterday that Granville Island used to take a bet on the success of artists - but that’s no longer the case.

Pernilla Ahrnstedt says that the CMHC has good intentions - but they’re not the right people to be running an arts and cultural space.

U.S. plans to allow importing prescription drugs from Canada

The Trump administration said Wednesday it will set up a system to allow Americans to legally import lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada, weakening a longstanding ban that had stood as a top priority for the politically powerful pharmaceutical industry.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar made the announcement Wednesday morning. 

Azar, a former drug industry executive, said U.S. patients will be able to import medications safely and effectively, with oversight from the Food and Drug Administration. The administration’s proposal would allow states, wholesalers and pharmacists to get FDA approval to import certain medications that are also available in Canada.

This plan is part of President Donald Trump’s goal to decrease the cost of medication for Americans, but what does this mean for Canadians? Will Canada be able to supply such a large market?
