RCMP ask public not to share misinformation as viral photo wrongly depicts B.C. murders suspect

RCMP in Manitoba say a photo circulating on social media does NOT show murder suspect Kam Mcleod.

The man in the photo bears a resemblance to Mcleod, and is shown holding up a newspaper with Mcleod and fellow suspect Bryer Schmegelesky's faces on the front page.

But Mounties say spreading online rumours doesn't help when people are already experiencing fear and uncertainty.

RCMP say the search for the suspect continues with a heavy police presence in the remote area of Gillam Manitoba - as a manhunt continues to track down the pair who are charged with one murder and suspected of two more.

Gillam businesses closing early to protect staff, as manhunt for suspects in B.C. murders continues

The focus of the manhunt is centred on the rural area of Gillam, Manitoba.

There, businesses have been shuttering early, out of concerns for staff safety. One of those businesses is the local Co-Op store, and their general manager spoke to Simi today.

Ridehailing in B.C.: how to prepare for a class 4 road test 

Let’s talk about ridehailing.

While applications from companies like Uber are being accepted starting September 3rd, Uber is casting doubt on whether or not there will be enough drivers with class four licences to get ridehailing services on the road. 

On yesterday’s program, Uber’s head of Western Canada, Michael van Hemmen, told me he’s concerned about Uber’s ability to provide services outside of the most densely populated areas of BC - that is, Metro Vancouver.

But what’s actually involved in a class four road test? And how should one prepare for it? Steve Walalce from the Wallace Driving School joined Simi to discuss.

‘This is not the news we wanted to be known for’: Mayor of B.C. murders suspects’ home town speaks to the Simi Sara Show

Manitoba RCMP say this morning that their officers are “working diligently” to find 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky and 19-year-old Kam McLeod.

Both men are from the town of Port Alberni here in BC. So what is the reaction in the community, now that they’re in the spotlight of this international news story?

Chapter 6

New report shows how fentanyl crushed the positive efforts that were being taken to increased life expectancy in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside

Vancouver Coastal Health has released its annual report and this year is heavily focused on the overdose crisis in BC.

Chief medical health officer, Dr. Patricia Daly, says before 2013, efforts in the Downtown Eastside had upped life expectancy in the area.

But then, fentanyl was first detected in the illegal drug supply.   

VCH has been pushing users to get their drugs tested but says only a "Small proportion" of people have used the service since 2016.

The report says fentanyl was detected in 87 per cent of all overdose deaths in 2018.

College student unearths 65 million-year-old Triceratops skull

Harrison Duran is a fifth year biology student at theUniversity of California, Merced, and he recently made the discovery of a lifetime on a recent paleontology dig when he unearthed a partial Triceratops skull. CKNW Contributor Claire Allen caught up with Harrison to learn all about his love of dinosaurs and his amazing discovery.

Petition to change the date of Halloween

Should the date of Halloween be changed to the last Saturday of October? 

A petition on Change.org states it would be safer if kids could trick-or-treat during the day and it would allow adults to celebrate at night. 

The petition has been gaining so much steam that it has already surpassed its original goal! 

Creators of the petition were hoping to collect 75-thousand signatures. By 10am this morning, they exceed that figure. Now the petition has a new goal of 150,000 (1-hundred and 50-thousand) signatures.

Aia Polansky, a 33-year-old single mother of three, was running in Cambridge, across the Charles River from Boston, on July 18 around 7:30 a.m. when she said a male jogger dropped his pants "all the way down to his knees" as she ran by him.

Aia is a former soldier in the Israeli army, so needless to say, the flasher picked the wrong woman to mess with.
