Vancouver City Council is considering a recommendation that could ease the tax burden for local businesses. It’s to do with the property tax paid by business owners, which currently is based on the value of what potentially could be built on or above the land, rather than what is actually built on the land presently.

The housing market continues to slowly cool off in Vancouver and condo prices in the city are seeing a price decrease that we haven't seen in half a decade.

The average price of a home in Vancouver dropped 4.7 per cent to just over $1.3 million, while condo prices in the city dropped 5.6 per cent to around $767,000 - a price drop we haven't seen for this type of housing since 2014.

Lyft says BC ridehailing regulations will result in a ‘lesser service’

That’s NDP MLA, Bowinn Ma, with the latest timeline for when people can expect to get ride hailing in BC. From September 3rd, companies can apply to provide the service. 

Ma says new regulations will require transportation network companies to pay five-thousand dollar annual licence fees and charge 30 cents per ride on vehicles that don't have access for disabled passengers.

A spokesman for ride-hailing company Lyft says rules and regulations announced by the B-C government could result in a lesser version of the service in the province.

Keith Baldrey has some of the regulations that will be involved.

The MLA for Kamloops-North, Peter Milobar, was part of an all-party ride-sharing committee that made a dozen recommendations to the Transport Ministry about ride sharing legislation. One of those asked for a class 5 license but was shot down almost instantly.

Former RCMP spokesperson who brought initial RCMP lawsuit reacts to another $100M settlement

More now on a story we brought you yesterday: for the second time in three years, the RCMP has settled a class action lawsuit over sexual harassment, and once again it's for $100 million.

Lead counsel for the plaintiffs, Angela Bespflug, was on the show yesterday afternoon and she says the women were brave in coming forward. 

This latest settlement covers 41,000 women who were civilian employees, and is similar to the $100 million settlement reached in 2016 with female officers. Former RCMP spokesperson, Catherine Galliford filed a lawsuit claiming multiple members of the force sexually harassed, assaulted and intimidated her on several occasions.

Breaking: 46 people taken to hospital after gas leak at Winnipeg hotel

46 people have been taken to hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a hotel in the city. The latest we know is that 15 of them are in critical condition.

Rate of coronary artery disease rising among young people in BC

A new study is looking at rates of cardiovascular disease among young people - that is, men under the age of 50, and women under the age of 55.

And it’s finding that the numbers of young people being impacted is NOT going down - despite the advancements being made among the population generally.

The study also found that women who were diagnosed with premature coronary disease had a significantly greater risk of dying from their heart disease compared with men.   

Researchers from VGH and St Paul’s in Vancouver were among the team looking into this.

Family Brawl at Disneyland

The so-called “happiest place on Earth” turned ugly on Saturday, when several members of one family brawled in front of Goofy’s Playhouse — and dozens of young children — at Disneyland in a fight captured on video. Footage recorded by a bystander shows the fight breaking out between a man in a red shirt and a woman pushing a stroller. The melee quickly escalates, drawing in two other men and three women, including an older woman on a motorized scooter. Stacey Butler from CBS was reporting from outside the park…

The Seagull Who Had His Moment In The Sun

For just a brief moment, a seagull in the UK was mistaken for perhaps something much more majestic...before his true identity was revealed. The seagull was bright yellow - almost golden looking - causing some to speculate if it was in fact a mythological phoenix! However, rescuers who found the strange bird on the side of the road revealed it was actually just stained yellow after coming in contact with the spice tumeric. The bird was found about 75km northwest of London. After a soapy bath, it’s natural grey, white and black colouring was restored and the bird was relegated from mythical creature back to just being a simple seagull. How it came to be covered from beak to talon remains a mystery, with one facebook user speculating that perhaps: “he was just trying to spice up his life.”
