Chapter 1: We know how hot the housing market has been since late last year, but who is actually buying the homes?  Great new data out of real estate giant Royal LePage this morning shows how much young people are driving the trend, and how many are getting into the market during the pandemic.

Chapter 2: The ombudsperson appointed to ensure Canadian companies aren’t engaging in human rights abuses won’t have the teeth promised by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau back in 2015.  We learned earlier in the week that newly appointed ombudsperson Sheri Meyerhoffer won’t have the investigative powers advocates say the role requires.

Chapter 3: New Survey results presented by the National Police Federation at the Surrey Board of Trade yesterday showed most respondents don’t want a municipal police force.  The federation also presented information about how much the transition might cost, and potential staffing issues they might face as well.

Chapter 4: Listen up if you’re hoping to get out camping this season, the reservation system is set to open up in a couple of weeks and we’re going to give you all the details you need to get in early.

Chapter 5: For all the money flowing out of the federal and provincial governments, small businesses are still in trouble.  New data released by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business this morning shows the amount of debt small businesses are taking on has ballooned as a result of the pandemic.

Chapter 6: A lot of vaccine distribution and planning is about pure logistics, but there’s also a broader imperative that informs the strategy health officials use.  New research out of Simon Fraser University is raising the question of whether the rollout plan should prioritize frontline workers, instead of just the older population.

Chapter 1: Disposable coffee pods turned into a huge source of trash after they became so popular a few years back. Well one researcher at U-B-C may have found a solution that actually keeps the coffee more fresh as well. 

Guest: Zac Hudson, Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Chemistry at The University of British Columbia.

Chapter 2: Speaking of keeping trash out of the landfill, a Metro Vancouver initiative to cut down on the amount of clothes people throw out just launched their third annual campaign.  It’s an award winning program called Think Thrice About Your Clothes, and it’s trying to deal with the fact that a lot of people just throw their fast-fashion items in the garbage when they’re done with them.

Chapter 3: Not a great look for the Vancouver School Board.  They voted to approve a retroactive raise for trustees at a closed-door meeting, so they’re getting that pay bump all the way back to 2019.
