Or 3 1/2: Formulaic Romance, So-so Steam Punk, but Interesting Characters

Despite engaging characters and a world that could be an interesting amalgam of steam punk sci-fi and fantasy with a core of indigenous beliefs, this book fails to come together in a satisfying way: I kept wanting it to get better than it did. It is a pleasant enough read, but it never grabbed me in the way that some of MgHugh's other fantasy novels have.

I have a habit (bad? Maybe) of requesting advanced readers' copies of books or such, downloading them in ebook format, and then forgetting everything their blurbs said about them. So it wasn't until I opened the epub of The Alchemy of Desire that I realized that it was from Carina Press, which I afterward discovered is a sort of PNR subdivision of ... Harlequin. Oh dear. I mean, yes, the title should be a dead giveaway that it's a romance, but somehow it wasn't (the man on the cover is fully clothed!) (I quite like the cover, actually), and I braced myself.

And the beginning was good. So good. It was an alternate-19th century urban fantasy set in New Orleans post-Civil War. And this was not Ken Burns's Civil War; the main issue of the war seems to have been neither slavery nor states' rights but a fight between those who can wield magic (Wielders) âthe Confederacyâ and those who can't and use steampunk machinery instead (Machinists): the Union. (The Machinists' Union? Really? What local?) I loved the beginning. There was a lot of good stuff there, despite some typos I hope were corrected for a paper edition.

Then the story left New Orleans.

Damn.

There was so much scope in that setup - it was deep and rife with possibility. I didn't expect that. Finding it unexpectedly makes it even more of a shame that the possibilities were unexplored.

The two brothers at the heart of the story, Diah and Cager, are forced into going off to hunt the White Buffalo, and for this they need a guide. And the only guide willing to have them is Oni, a half-Lakota woman who is a bundle of secrets and Issues. She's not taken terribly seriously, at least by the elder and more obnoxious of the two brothers, Cager, because she's a woman and because she's a half-breed. She's an illegal, unlicensed Wielder (like Cager; Diah is an Alchemist - hence the title). She's a shapeshifter. And she has no intention of taking them to kill the White Buffalo, because the White Buffalo is sacred to her tribe.

An ambitious, creative new Urban Fantasy

I'm a big fan of Urban Fantasy, a genre which --for the most part-- features some combination of vampires, shapeshifters, werewolves, witches and/or Fae. It's an unusual author that finds a new otherworldly focus. And even more unusual: to make it work.

"Dreams' Dark Kiss" follows the world of dream guardians. Our heroine, Ciaran, has been ferrying souls through the Dreamscape to the Other Side, ever since she was a child. But suddenly, she finds herself in the unfamiliar and desolate Wastelands --an in-between place inside the Dreaming. She is attacked by a beast and nearly raped, but she calls out to others of her kind for help. In doing so, she summons the man who will be her mate, a dream guardian named Keoni. Through him, Ciaran learns that she is more powerful in the dream world than she knew.

Of course, the story has to have a villain. The one here is trying to bring the stuff of nightmares into the waking world. Oh, and he wants to make Ciaran his broodmare to help with his cause. Ciaran must work with Keoni to discover why she is so special and to foil the bad guy's evil plan.

There's a reason so many authors go the vampire and werewolf route: people already understand the fundamentals of the mythology. As refreshing as a new story is, understanding the world building is a serious endeavor. I didn't always follow the what was happening in the dreamworld. The glossary of terms at the end was helpful. But I think, by the time I got to the end, I understood what was going on. And after reading this, I believe a sequel would be much easier for me to jump into.

Nearly 4 stars.

Liked it but....

I liked this book overall....however this is under the Romance category and yes there was a love story but there was really only 1 love scene and it was pretty boring. If you are looking for a clean cut drags is places but overall is a good read this is your book. I like to read romance because it takes me away and I can live vicariously through the characters so I prefer hot and steamy loves scenes. Montana Chase did a great job with the narration so between that and the overall love story being pretty decent I gave it 4 stars.

REALLY GREAT LISTEN

This was a gamble for me but I'm SO glad I bought it - it has a sexy 'cowboy type' hero rescuing his true love from the evil clutches of her gangster husband who has had her silver tipped (making her a sex slave).

It's a sci-fi romance with sex and a good plot/story.

Sexy but slow-paced...

Dr. Moon Thadin might be damned good at stellar mechanics but she didn't see her research assistant's traitorous plot coming. Blindsided and believed to be a traitor to the Republic herself she has only just been allowed to return to her research after three years. Desperate to prove her innocence and that she can reignite dead stars she dives into her work aboard the Differential. But her new partner ignites fires of his own.

Srin Flerovs has the mind of a computer and is of such value to the Republic that his handler has spent the past twenty years wiping his memory every two days. But there are some things that even his handler can't completely explain away such as his aging face and the sense of trust and desire he feels for Moon. When her experiment fails and the two face possible death they are left with no choice but to risk it all. Better to run together than die alone.

Finding really good scifi romance is something I look forward to. I'm a total Star Wars and Firefly geek who lives for a nice space adventure or alien race to dabble in. So glad I found K.S. Augustin because her writing is top notch amongst a not-always-reliable-for-quality epub world. In Enemy Hands certainly lacks the humorous moments the aforementioned fave scifi worlds of mine have giving it a harder, colder edge than most of the science fiction romance I've previously read. Augustin's Republic seems anti-alien, highly manipulative and political. The militaristic heavy-handedness present in the world building will appeal to hard scifi fans.

Moon is a heroine I immediately liked. She's extremely intelligent and while she's very driven she's not completely willing to take advantage of Srin to get results even when she's told that's what he's there for. I also liked that what few mentions of her physical stats were did not give a hard impression of any specific ethnicity. Srin, on the other hand, is mentioned as being very physically fit though based on his years of memory wiping history he has to be somewhere in his 40s. There's something about his personality that was really endearing, probably the fact that he puts up with half the crap he does is part of it. There is an intense and yummy chemistry between Srin and Moon that I had a hard time tearing myself away from. I wasn't sure I would like it at first but their personalities were refreshing individually and together.

The science is a bit confusing but Augustin does a decent job of making it non-essential for the reader to be a rocket scientist to enjoy it. While the plot does center around their work on Moon's experiment the actual story is how their romance can develop when he forgets her every two days.

The one thing the story really lacks that I tend to like is some likable secondary characters.

The story was a little slow but once you begin to feel like there is something familiar about the story you are completely invested in story. I really enjoyed how the author guides the reader throw this artfully detailed book. I would recommend it anyone.

A True Blessing

I was so delighted that I picked this book up, because it is a rare jewel.... a fast paced easy read that captured this adult woman in a world of fairy tale that had me so delighted that I stayed up until almost 6 am to finish it! An avid reader who hasn't picked up a book in months.... once I picked this up I couldn't put it down! I laughed, I cried & this brought back fond memories of my beloved Father! Thank you!!!

Great story for young women

The Journey is an intriguing story of a young woman, Ciran, who leaves her fatherâs kingdom for a journey into another world. If she remains true to her noble heritage and follows the teachings she is provided with, she will be able to return to her fatherâs kingdom. If not, she will be forgotten and mourned as her mother was.

âChoice.

âIt is a fickle thing, this word choice. For upon that word sat all others. Upon that act, sat every consequence. Upon that act, was the vast and unknown fate of all things decided.â

In her journey Ciran meets Orion, her guardian, who is more than he appears. She is eventually joined by her brother, Sakriel, who has the gift of healing. But she is also misled by others, betrayed and taken captive. Will Ciran be able to stay strong and worthy to return home? Will she ever find the man who will love her forever?

I liked the wholesome, metaphoric tale that had a good dose of suspense, danger and love.

Halloween Surprise

This is a novella length book, so not very long, but very entertaining. It is fast paced with interesting characters and the storyline makes for a nice Halloween read.

Maxie Duncan has not been a witch for long and is looking forward to her first Halloween as one. It's her favorite holiday and she wonders why her new supernatural friends do not want to celebrate with her. There is a male witch, her friend and possible boyfriend, a pixie roommate and her boyfriend the trickster, they all reside in an apartment complex full of other supernaturals. Maxie wants to show them that the season has more meaning than they give it credit for. And as a nascent witch trouble of course ensues.

I enjoyed this so much that it has definitely interested me in the series, so I will be going back to number and getting to know the whole story of Maxie and how she became a witch.

Maxine Duncan

She is great, although she portrays herself as a typical blond, she is not, she realizes that, but has a hard time accepting it, which, of course you would, if you received news of what she is at a later stage of your life, I can understand that, but the things that happen to her are cute, she causes some of them, but if she did not, then there would be no story and if that were to happen, there would be no book. I did read the first book, so reading this one second I understood and got to know the characters. I sure do hope there will be more books about Maxine, I still have to read the one about her and Christmas, but I can't wait. I love these types of books and it makes it entertaining to read a book that doesn't make you think once in a while.

It's Not The Great Pumkin, Maxie Duncan

Such a cute short. A very believable storyline, a definite 5star rating. The characters were believable and easy to follow as well as imagine...it would be no problem reading a much longer plot, storyline, or extended version of either the characters or the story itself. I recommend this to anyone who likes reading about witches, magic, paranormal, spells, warlocks, etc., to name a few. New witches are always fun to read about. Nice job keeping me entertained. I'm on my way to reading more about the characters and other stories...

A light read, but fun. I would like to read the first book. I was given this book and read straight through. Big lead up to a too short ending.
