World Before: A Collection of Stories (The Ending Series Book 5)
by Lindsey Fairleigh & Lindsey Pogue
    Aug 3 2017
This was an enjoyable read, it is the 5th book in the Endings series. I love the well developed characters I have grown to love through the series. We get a peek of what life was like before the ending. Some of the background we had gotten before, some with more details. Some were new in this book, all were well thought out and delivered to the readers to make the series more enjoyable if that were possible.
I love both these Authors with all my heart. I am a true blue horror fan and these ladies have also developed books as individuals that has expanded my view and enriched my reading pleasure in genreâs I wouldnât normally be drawn to. Check out the After the ending series as well as their individual works, you will not be disappointed.
How was the World Before for our main characters from The Ending Series?
It had a perfect way of grabbing the reader's attention by having Zoe tell these short stories in her diary, the one place she knew she could write about anything because it was her own private diary. She had always felt over-whelmed by her ability to pick up on anyone's emotions and not being able to tell anyone so writing in her journal was her way at least out of her mind and onto paper. A great collection of stories of some of the characters from "After the Ending", how they were before their world fell apart, before the ending. The final chapter in this novel was very intriguing and created a sense of longing for the next novel of the continuation of "World Before".
    Absolutely Love!
I absolutely love this series. I was hooked from the first (After the Ending) and have bought each one since then. Though I usually don't care for stories written in first person, the Lindseys have a way of pulling you in. World Before is no different. Zoey records other's memories in her diary, telling a bit of them from before the virus happened. I loved the sneak peak into the other character's minds when they were still "normal." And the ending of the book.... Let's just say I can't wait for the next one!!!
    Short...but sweet
Was a nice addition to the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
It seemed like a legitimate heist when someone hired Storm Gauntlet and her crew to go hijack some cargo. Pirate ships did that sort of thing.
However, whoever hired them didn't count on the Science Officer's sneakiness. Paranoia. Whatever.
The situation didn't make sense. No one would deliver cargo to a dead planet. It had to be a trap. Someone had set them up.
    But who? And why?
The Doomsday Vault follows the adventures of Javier Aritza, Suvi, and the rest of the crew of Storm Gauntlet in a story with unexpected twists, as well as surprising consequences.
This is the fifth novella in the Science Officer series, and the beginning of the mini-series War of the Pirate Clans, to be continued in the next novella, The Last Flagship.

    Entertaining stuff
When Blaze Ward writes a book, it is a very good one. The Doomsday Vault is no exception. The entire Science Officer series has been one where I grabbed the newest volume as soon as it appeared. This one ended with a cliffhanger, of sorts. So I hope the next appears sometime soon to tie up that loose end. And to also tie up the apparently changing relationships between our MC, Captain Zakhar, and the dragon lady - Sykora.
    Book 5 in this series.
Most books in this series are pretty good, but are basically novellas. So it's like you're really getting a third to half of a book. I've struggled with paying for so little, but it's been good enough to keep enticing me to pay. Book 6 was the worst though. Not sure I will continue after that.
Short fun science fiction with serious characters. Well, much fun as an indentured scientist on a pirate ship can have.
Short fun science fiction with serious characters. Well, much fun as an indentured scientist on a pirate ship can have. Well written, well edited, well ebooked. Definitely not Spock. Look forward to the next book.
    Making the wrong people mad
Novelette #5. A simple job suddenly gets life threatening for Javier and crew. Cat and mouse to stay alive. Plenty of action, twists, character evolution, and intelligent discussion of what to do next. Good story.
Dynamic and fun book to read.
The author is keeping up dropping tidbits of historical reference. Non stop action and confusing slight of hand. The writing is well done, innocent pirates with complex scruples. Escapism at its purest! Next.....

âGoing âAll Captain Ahab on Nessieââ
With all that is known about the improbability, neigh, the impossibility of a prehistoric sea creature having survived and living in Loch Ness in Scotland, I was hesitant to pick up a new novel focusing upon the terror within those famous inky-black waters. But Hunter Shea manages to pull off a rip-roaring yarn with Loch Ness Revenge as a brother and sister team makes it their mission to expose what killed their parents on the Loch before their eyes when they were children.
Realizing that until she kills the creature that killed her parents, she will never get over her night terrors, two decades later Natalie McQueen is camped out on the shores of Loch Ness, where she has spent five years, recently baiting the creature with sides of beef by herself in a super-charged, astonishingly well-equipped pontoon boat, the Vindictia. After a sudden and harrowing encounter in the dark of night on the loch, she frantically calls her twin brother, Austin, who joins her on what may be the realization of their mutual aim: to kill the fabled Nessie. Soon joining them is Henrik Kooperâa man Austin has befriended also on a mission to get revenge for the deaths of his parents, but in Indonesia, not on Loch Ness and Kooper doesnât believe in messing around, coming equipped with enough weaponry to fight an army.
From this early point in the book, Hunter Shea ratchets up the suspense and action to a never-ending boil until the final page of Loch Ness Revenge. His tale is no ordinary âletâs go monster huntingâ story and what the McQueens and Kooper discover in the loch is no mythical Nessieâand it is not alone.
âThe beasts of manâs nightmares have no care for his aspirations or expectations.â
The pace of Sheaâs storytelling is relentless and made all the more inviting by the first person narration by Natalie. The bookâs narration brings a very human element into a very inhuman and astonishing environment and supplies Sheaâs book with a sense of immediacy. Sheaâs variation, indeed metamorphosis, of what lurks in the pitch-black water of Loch Ness only to surface on occasion, is imaginative and just what the novel and the reader needs to make Loch Ness Revenge riveting, inviting a suspension of disbelief or even raising the possibility of the question: is any of this even feasible? Shea provides that exciting of a read.
Ironically, at one point one of the characters states, âHollywood, this isnât.â But Loch Ness Revenge reads like the best of a Hollywood monster thriller and, indeed, would make for a stupendous adventure flick with numerous, awesome visual scenes.

    I good read
I find myself hoping that there is at least another book in the series. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, but I feel that the independent Mars colony still has some growing to do. The book was good, perhaps not the same as the first two, but that might also have just been my perception. Read the book, support the author, the book is worth the time and the money.
Mars Colonization, Genetic Manipulation, and War; What More Could One Want?!
Not quite as good as Colony One and Two Mars, but a logical conclusion to the trilogy. All three books were satisfying reads, and while not the technological tour-de-force of "The Martian", they did add to the Mars canon. If, like myself, you are looking for projections of what the future of man on Mars might be like, with a bit of near field sci-fi thrown in, then you will enjoy this and the previous two books. I look forward to the author's next offering!
This series has been an easy and interesting read for me
This series has been an easy and interesting read for me. I don't know if the author has plans to write another book but I believe that there is enough interest and there are enough leftover plot ends to write another book. I give this book another 4 stars for the ease of reading and the concept of a colony on Mars with clones and a deadly bacteria (with benefits). While I have said that it isn't great literature the ideas covered are interesting enough that I will probably read the series again. This final book covers the showdown between all of the countries and agencies trying to have control over Mars and all that it has to offer mankind.
    Third of the trilogy
This is the third book of the trilogy, but it leaves me wanting more. There's at least one more book of this story and I hope it's written.
Our intrepid heroine is still fierce, smart and a natural leader. Nills is still innovative, but needs more fleshing out. Who couldn't love Gizmo.
The writing is still somewhat clunky and awkward, but the author is getting better. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
Best book of the series, great climax
I very much enjoyed the continued story of the interesting characters, especially Jann and Gizmo. Clever solution to the bacteria problem too, I loved that part. Some typos and grammatical errors, otherwise would be 5 stars.

Great follow up to The Incorruptibles.
I've been sitting on this for a while, writing a review for this book. It's something I've been meaning to do, but have struggled with what exactly it was I wanted to say without dragging it on and on. So I guess I'll just try to keep it simple. For starters this is a direct sequel to the previous book in the series, The Incorruptibles, and it takes up almost immediately following the events laid out therein. If you haven't read that book then you've got to make a serious correction in your life and do so, because it's great. John does an amazing job establishing the groundwork for an amazing world in it, one which he fleshes out further in the pages of Foreign Devils and makes it all the more large and vivid. The action is top-notch, fast paced and doesn't ever suffer from getting bogged down in the details. The action scenes feel frenetic, fluid, and exciting and effectively convey a real sense of urgency. Despite the fact that it's a larger book, clocking in well over 400 rather large pages, I found myself burning through it. It's a story that moves, and pulls you along with it.
I'm getting dangerously close to making this a lot longer than I intended, so I'll endeavor to wrap it up. Foreign Devils is a fun book, that takes place in an exciting world full of interesting characters, more than a few of which are wonderfully nuanced. with mythology and cosmology that keeps the reader wanting more. It also does a great job of setting the stage for the third and final book in the series, which I officially can't wait for the release of (later this year, I hear). So, yeah. Foreign Devils is an awesome book and another achievement for John Hornor Jacobs which any fan of modern fantasy should definitely dig into.
Final note: this series would make for a great Netflix series or something similar. True story.
Spectactularly inventive epic adventure, masterfully written.
The second part of charmingly narrated epic tale of Ruman cowboys and their demon-powered adventures.
Every page of these books is steeped in action and monsters and magic and love and friendship and delightful evil.

    Wow.
So, first of all. The premise is amazing.
The implementation? Absolutely terrible, as in it wouldnt even pass for a childrens book and i constantly found myself wondering how it got published.
It could have been sooooooo beautiful and amazing but it sucks.
The narrator did the best they could with such a crappy story and the dialogue. Holy ballsac! I have never been subjected to such bland and inhuman and fake dialogue.
    An enjoyable read.
Good story, excelent preformance, and an interesting side story. Are we as a species, able to recover from a global catastrophe?
AI was fantastic everyone else was generic
Is there anything you would change about this book?
There was a lot going on in the story and felt there should have been more time to explain and build the main characters. It was a fast paced story that left me lacking in story. Also, the aliens and humans were generic the AI was the only interesting character. The battles were short and left me just going meh and I never really felt any struggle or need to find out what happened next. I started the book in love, in love with Valkyri the AI and I finished the book for her but beyond that very dull.
Would you be willing to try another book from Dietmar Wehr? Why or why not?
I have looked a few of his other titles but unless one goes on sale like this one did I don't see myself using a credit or buying one right out. The AI was great but I am not desperate enough for something to read to read another book just for one decent character.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Valkyri communicating with the humans for the first time and using hand gestures to communicate till she could pick up the language.
Was The Last Valkyrie worth the listening time?
I'm not upset or regret listing to the book just had a lot of potential that fell flat. I would have liked a lot more in the book.
is this a book or radio series?
this book gives you the feeling that you're sitting around a radio listening to a series that they used to have in the before the Advent of television or even going to the movies in the forties and fifties it's something that it's okay so at the time I'm listening to this audible is giving you the folks at $10 as a sale this is the sort of book that regularly priced should be $10 and is something that should be a series and stain it as such

    Astonishing
I'm a big fan of the expanse series, and this is an interesting thread which sits alongside the narrative of the first six books. It adds some intriguing details and follows events from an unusual perspective.
The real joy of this novella, though, is the superb prose and vivid characterisation of the main protagonist. This is without doubt some of the best and most sophisticated writing that science fiction has to offer.
If you're after a romp or an action fix, this isn't for you. If you're looking for an exploration of a difficult character which includes some uncomfortable empathising with a characters journey into amoral obsession then this is worth your time.
    More Expanse gorgeousness
I don't know which of the duo who make up SA Corey does the writing, but really, it's wonderful. The guy can write. Essentially this is the portrait of a scientist caught up in research on the newly discovered protomolecule. It is from his POV and every second of it is fantastic, his complicated childhood, the poverty, the ambition and the desperation are all communicated perfectly within a couple of hours.
If you took all the sci-fi and science out you would still have a very compelling piece of story-telling. Of course, this is a short prequel to what kicks off James Holden's adventures, but it is as good as any of the Expanse novels.
    Plus...Jefferson Mays.
    Highly recommended.
    interesting novella
OK. I bought this by accident, I thought it was part of the Expanse series. It's not in the series but it is of the series and it's actually pretty good!
Seriously, if you like the Expanse you do need this to fill in some interesting gaps.
    Enjoy!
    Excellent addition to Expanse universe
