Tale of preparedness and survival w/great closure.

This is a stand-alone novel in the New Homefront series. Its more or less a prequel that documents the state of the country and in a more local sense the situation in the small town of Delaware City, Delaware prior to the collapse. If you read or listened to the first four books you will recognize some of the characters and situations. This is a good if seriously right-wing tale of preparedness and survival in our countrys current social and political climate. Wonderful characters, great story, excellent closure. Patrick Freeman continues to do an excellent job of narration.

It 's at the top of all the audiobooks I have listened to.I have enjoyed all of the books in this series and can't wait for the next the next one.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Viking One?

The thing I like is the way Bird explains why things have happened.It is like reading the headlines of what is happening in our government today.

What about Patrick Freemans performance did you like?

Freeman's performance makes the characters come to life with the voices he gives them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no.I hate for a good book to end so I try and stretch them out as long as possible.But at times I will sit in the garage, (I listen while driving) waiting for an exciting part to end.

Any additional comments?

Bird brings real world events into his books and helps me understand what the consequences of the choices our government makes and the effects of those choices have on my everyday life.I also feel he presents great ideas on how to survive the disasters brought about by those choices.

Decent book from Haldeman

It wasn't quite at Forever War level but if you're a Haldeman fan you'll probably like this too. Never heard of the narrator before but he did a good job.

Love Love Love!

Gotta love a good fast paced techno thriller scifi novel! I finished this one really quickly and kept listening after I got home (I generally just listen during my commute).

Joe Haldeman is always good IMO and I wasn't let down by this. I was drawn to it because of the cover --way better than the original artwork on this book-- and wasn't disappointed. I guess you CAN judge an (audio)book by it's cover.

What made the experience of listening to Buying Time the most enjoyable?

This moved at such a fast pace that it was almost like a thriller...but was also very much a science fiction story. So, it was a techno-thriller I guess. Also very conspiracy-ish. Set in the near future, where immortality is a possibility, the author somehow took what is a common theme in science fiction and twisted it around and made it totally brand new! I wanted to listen to this because it seemed like it could be similar to Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow, and frankly, it's better!

What about Eric Vales performance did you like?

He was very gritty and believable.

Forever War by Joe Haldeman brought me to this, but I think I actually liked this better. Basically, I liked this book even more than I thought I would!

after "Forever War" I wasn't expecting a narrator who sounded like this, but he still did just as good of a job. Really cool story I give it a thumbs up.

Amazing book with great characters

Really loved the book the fact that they were multiple performers according to who the story was focusing on at the time. Sustainability and the environment have been the focus of my life for almost a decade now. And I never thought I would read a book this interesting dealing with the subject matter. Only real complaint is a wish that all the performers read the lines of their characters even in the chapters that focused on other characters. Because some of the narrators weren't as good as others and doing the accents and mannerisms of the other characters. But that's not a big deal. Anyway highly recommend it.

Thoroughly recommended if you like you're speculative fiction

That KSR sure knows how to write a vivid book. Hats off to the brilliant voice cast too.

Brilliant setting, story not so much.

great idea for a setting, drowned New York, but I didn't think the story ever accumulated to much or really got resolved. it's probably how it's meant to be, but it didn't sit right with me. rather than all the story lines coming together, they head that way but then the book ends.

Christensen has created a very interesting world

The story starts 200 years after an event known as the Fall. Two nations foresaw the danger and migrated to the Moon. Years later, the next generation decided to come back to Earth and protect it from any other environmental disaster, using the few 'English' left to build their empire, creating new history and deleting the old one from the books and the memories of the survivors. The saying that 'History is written by the victors' cannot be more true than here. When reaching the age of eighteen, the English are 'enlisted' in one of the several jobs where they should serve for the next seven years and maybe gain the status of citizen. Many of them, the less lucky ones, will go to the Corpus, where they will be enslaved and most probably will not survive the seven years. Sue and Dave are two of this enlisted people, but to two different services. Each one on their part of the Covenant will discover that the Moon people have told them lies, but they will need to find the depth of them, and if it is even possible to discover the truth and act upon it.

The first thing that caught my eye was the word 'Rift' in the title of the book. I have a soft spot for the mentioned word in a science-fiction context. And I love dystopian novels, it is something I cannot resist. They usually present a society which, in principle, does not make a lot of sense, and we need to discover, along with the main characters, the truth behind it all. It is like solving a mystery in a way, in which the pieces finally fall into place. And The Rift Saga is one of these stories. It caught my attention from the start, with well-developed characters with real motivations in an upside down world.

Magic Faraway tree for grown ups.

okay. it was good. I'm not saying it wasn't. it just wasn't my usual genre. A fantastic journey through many differing realities in a Winnebago! original if nothing else! It felt like a child's fantasy though. a bit like Alice in Wonderland or The Magic Faraway tree. but definitely for grown ups. however, remove the swearing and gore and it's a perfect bed time treat for the youngsters!!!! I wouldn't call it science fiction, and I wouldn't call it fantasy. so let's Just say.... science fantasy. oh yeah, the narrative was EXCELLENT

I could not even finish it

Though the premise and story have some promise the author just can't seem to create a believable character. He has a very competent and professional Naval captain sticking her tongue out at a subordinate at one point in the book. He can't seem to keep his characters true to their portrayal. His writing is juvenile and unpolished. How a book like this makes it passed an editor is beyond my understanding.

The narrator is by far the worst I've ever listened to on an audible book. His inflections just seem wrong and his cadence is annoying. He might be the perfect pairing for this author because they both seem to struggle with making a character believable.

I have listened to we'll over 100 audio books from audible and have never just stopped listening in the middle of a book. This book however became the first.

Sure. It's a fun story. It has lots of action and adventure. The characters act in a reasonable manner so it has believability for the setting. And you like the characters. I'm waiting for the next installment.

The "Silver Ships" series by S. H. Jucha. This is another sci-fi action adventure series.

Fast-paced adventure in space

Such an awesome book. The author grabs you right off the bat with the premise of humanity as scavengers just surviving on the fringe of a crowded, advanced galaxy and keeps you hooked as the story runs from one narrow escape to the next.

The narration is fantastic and I especially appreciated the voice work on the characters. I got the real feeling that these were unique, distinct alien races I was listening to.

Great listen, very addicting with just the right amount of sci-fi, space & military tactics, and action. Scott's universe for the Vultures is familiar but with unique aspects that kept me wanting more. Can't wait for the next one!

My first ever review

Fast paced and detailed.

It grips you and keeps you interested in both story and characters from start to finish.

I won't write details of neither story or characters because you should have a clean frame of mind to absorb and enjoy this.

Attach this book to a part of your memory because it deserves a place inside your mind to be remembered and enjoyed for a good while by just reminiscing.

I have never listened to a full audio book before because I have problems with audio perception.

So trust me when I say: I am glad I didn't let that stop me.

A Rolicking Good Space Opera!

I had a lot of fun with this book. It had all the necessaries of a very good space opera: fire and action; an evil enemy; a somewhat slutty Captain; and a crew that knew how to talk, barter, or "appropriate" what was needed by their subpar ship. And just to put frosting on the cake, the ship had Marines that didn't take a back seat to any fight, especially one for their ship. It was just a good all around light listen made even better by the narrator, Steve Barnett. I was listening to a new (to me) author and narrator and it was well done.
