    Publisher's Summary:
Can a genetically engineered psychopath grow a conscience, get the girl, and save the galaxy? Two out of three ain't bad.
Rico has a problem. The experimental program that gave him the high intelligence and lightning reflexes he needs as a hit man for a galactic crime syndicate left him incapable of internalizing moral imperatives the rest of us take for granted. It takes real effort for him to pass as a normal human being and he avoids it whenever he can. But he has a job he loves, a fast ship, and plenty of cash. So life is good.
When Rico takes an assignment on a planet where a major political conference seeks to bring more order to the galaxy, he accidentally thwarts a terrorist attack and has to pose as a visiting cop from a faraway world. To complicate matters, he partners with a local female cop and soon realizes he has fallen in love. That shouldn't happen! But not everything is as it seems, and as the story speeds along from one unexpected plot twist to another, Rico discovers the secret of his own identity and faces a terrible choice.
Will Rico live to become fully human? Or will he die just as he grasps what has been missing from his life?
Frank Fleming's exciting debut novel combines action, romance, and moral philosophy in an entertainingly combustible mix.

Kind of like Dexter in space
This was a fun and thoughtful book that is well presented. The protagonist's quest to understand his own humanity resonated deeply with me and made for a compelling character. It reminded me a little of Dexter from the television show. There is enough levity in the story to make it one of the funnier sci-fi books I have read in a while, without being overdone. The supporting characters were well conceived and added to the quality of the work. This a book that is worth your time.
    Surprise surprise
Pleasing surprise I don't like sociopath books but this is hilarious and a wildly fun and at times wicked but always entertaining roller coaster ride. I had listened to too many Sci fi books that were either boorishly slow or too generic and lacking in originality. This book was not either of those and if you want funny and creative Sci fi this is truly a masterpiece
Fresh, clever, wry, wise, and riveting...
Fast paced, and hard to put down: --to the the extent I (kind of like the protaganist) found myself calculating as to how much I could impose on others (e.g. my family and employer) to keep listening. A cleverly structured plot, wildly sarcastic and wry, but subtly wise; --and intended to leave you thinking. Don't want to spoil it by telling too much, but after buying this because it looked kind of interesting as a $3.95 deal of the day (Thanks Audible!), I was thrilled at finding an out-of-the-blue best-listen that was so fresh, and enjoyable. Well worth a credit, or the member price!
    I want more........please
I absolutly love the main character in this book.
Narrator is a perfect fit also.. MORE......(please)
    Absolutely Wonderful!!
Satirist Frank J Fleming has written a really funny novel, his first foray into the medium. The result is not just good,; it is great. The novel is about Rico a man who flies about the populated planets of the galaxy as a killer for hire. Rico does not relate well to other humans; well, actually he does not have empathy for anyone but himself and lower forms of life.
SuperEgo is really a new genre of fiction.

A daring and resourceful paleontologist uncovers something at the infamous K-T boundary marking the end of dinosaurs in the fossil record - something big, dangerous, and absolutely, categorically impossible. Okay story ruined by the voiceactor's performance
First off the tempo of this reader's speech is TERRIBLE. He literaly makes a pause EVERY THREE WORDS no matter if there is a reason for that or no. What makes it worse is the fact that the pauses are as long as pauses between sentences and SHORTER than pauses between chapter sections. There has been multiplr times when a time skip happened in a chapter but I did not notice because he continued reading the sentence after the time skip imidiatelly after the previous one.
The story itself is not that bad, but it doee feel like the writers are more interested in writing a space opera with superhuman protagonist than a hard SF which this is supposed to be. The parts discussing alien possible sociology and physiology and the exploration of the alien station are interesting and are written in a convincing manner, but than pretty much anything related with the political background of the mission or the technology is often ridiculous. For some reason, this is an NASA only mission , with other powers seemingly blind to benefits of exploring an alien space station. The tech related to the sensors of the protagonist AJ might as well be magic.
    Good listen
Slightly cardboard and archetypical in character development but a very good sci fi story without Star Wars technology. Highly recommend
    Great story, awful narration.
The narrator read the entire book like a politician reading a speech.. he paused, at all, of, the, wron, g, places. it was, disappointing, and, diffi, cult, to listen to.
    Improbable but entertaining.
This book is about the trials and tribulations of space travel to Mars, with aliens thrown in to motivate and mystify. The evidence of alien presence, a fossil, is 65 million years old so none are alive at the time of the book. There is a mystery about how/why the aliens happened to be on Earth at exactly the time of the K-T boundary (when the asteroid impact killed the dinosaurs).
So, sorry, the book does not send the reader back to directly witness an alien/dinosaur battle, even though the cover implies it. No time travel here.
The book does follow the uncovering of the alien fossil. Coincidentally, an unmanned probe sent to a moon of Mars discovers the remains of an alien base. So an expedition is put together to see what can be learned about them.
The plot evolves from the circumstances and challenges of space travel. The book is rather similar to "The Martian" by Andy Weir, where science provides the method and natural forces provide the drama, with less time pressure. People are motivated by mundane needs and desires; there are no monstrous villains or super heroes, no nefarious foreign governments. However, everybody is superlative at their professions.

Great Next Installment with Fantasy and Adventure
Winterlands can make for brutal and grueling fantasy settings, and Mathias slaps us around with that cold brutality as well as keeping Vanx as lively as ever. His details put us right in the action along with his motely crew of hunters, with beasts and beings of all kinds sharing the land with varying degrees of success. We've got epic serpent danger, Gargans, fae, minotaurs, mammoth shrews, warlocks, a witch to hunt and a pixie queen to save. Vanx is on his game, and so is Poops, who I must admit is my favorite character. Though I do love Chelda, too, and the vision of her with an elf nested in her chest will be with me always. That's what I love most about these books. The plotting and action is stellar, but it's the fun, the vibrant play with language and the sheer unconventional delight that makes them memorable and addicting. I seriously want to sit around the fire and have elk stew with these folks, while also loving the magic and action pulling the narrative along. The book contains a peek into the next book and it looks like more great witch hunting is ahead.
    Witty, sharp, completely immersive!
As a fellow fantasy writer, I greatly appreciate the work that M. R. Mathias has put into this series. To craft a world that is so rich in unique and engaging characters--along with a vast mythos and thrilling magic--is no easy task. But all of this, and more, is accomplished with a masterful flourish that will keep you reading into the late hours. In fact, once you start, you won't be able to put the book down. The characters are so well-written that they will begin to feel like your friends, and each page shared with them creates more of a comfortable intimacy.
I am a huge fan of cold and wintery settings for fantasy, so this definitely hit the spot for me. In addition, the narrative is masculine and clever-- often a bit bawdy-- which kept me smiling. I even had a few laugh out loud moments.
Overall, these books definitely do suck me in into the story and keep me sucked in even long after I should have gone to bed. If you have some spare time to really dive in and read them marathon-style, I'd highly recommend giving this author a try! It will be well worth your time.
    Worth it.
Great fantasy fiction series. Having read the two previous books of this series, I would have to say this one has been the most emotional one thus far. I like that we get to see a softer side of Vanx. I mean who doesn't like a man/or half man that loves dogs. (I still can't get over the whole Poops name,so cute.) Straight to the point if your a hard fantasy buff, and want to be introduced to Vanx's world then this series is the book for you.

    Stop it I like it!
This one is even better than the first one! The action is awesome! The narration is brilliant! The story is good! This series is now my favorite in the zombie genre.
However, there is one problem and it is a problem that really annoys me. For the price this title is too short, it should have been included with this first in the series. This series if it continues at this rate, will be the most expensive series I have in my library. This frustration is made worse by the fact that the last 24 minutes is a preview of the next in the series, and by the fact that the narration is a little slow and is best turned up to 1.25x speed it is over in a blink of an eye! So I cant help but feel as though I am being taken advantage of
However, with my whine aside. I loved this one!
    great book non stop action
great book the highly recommended anybody who served in the military will preciate it awesome read the book

No doubt and did twice what fun! like I said it could and should have been longer i enjoyed the ride that was offered.
Gi Joe Book 2 vs 3 Million Dead in Chicago
Would you listen to Mogadishu of the Dead again? Why?
Yes. I really enjoyed this book so much, and can't wait until the next book comes out later this month.
What did you like best about this story?
The part where the operators went into Chicago to find a possible cure for the Zombie Plague.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The part where the religious zealots attacked the ship attempting to ground the USS John Kennedy and kill the remaining crew.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When I though that the operators were about to be trapped by the zombies only to narrowly escape on a sail boat into lake Michigan.
    Any additional comments?

    Hm
Premise we are all familiar with. And unfortunately the author doesn't really branch out from it. She doesn't make it new or interesting. I did finish it, but almost without realizing it. The ending was rushed and not satisfying. I didn't connect emotionally with any characters.... So I must say, this one is not one I would recommend if anyone asked me for a recommendation on post-apocalyptic fiction.
This goes into my do-not-repeat pile. Which is too bad.
She is a master of weaving tales
Firstly, Ive read Jacqueline Druga before so I knew what I was getting myself into with this one. She is a master of weaving tales of all the different people that are affected by a virus and their responding attitudes, crimes, or praying!
This was no different. I loved The Flu, however, in this book we really get to delve into peoples lives. I liked being able to follow someone as they are faced with the plague and/or their loved ones dying. I think it lends itself to the reader being able to really get invested in the characters much more than when they are killed off suddenly or when they just fall out of the plot.
I also love that she isnt afraid to start a plague at the beginning. She lets us follow the virus as it goes across the world. This particular story is mostly in America but she allows her readers to view what is going on in the rest of the world as well.
I really enjoyed the characters. I was also surprised that there was only one narrator. Andrew Wehrlen does such a good job that I thought there were at least two, if not three narrators. I easily could tell the characters apart and never had a difficult time keeping up with him. He also has a great way of really inflecting the drama into a scene that allows for the reader to feel like they are in the situation. Scary to say the least.
The overall audio was also pleasant to listen to. The performance was obviously amazing and the production quality kept up with the fabulous job that Andrew Wehrlen did.
The storyline was intense and made for a fantastic story.

    Sending Warriors on another Quest
A tale of a powerful family that loses a genius (or he escapes). His granddaughter finds the planet he traveled to, and hires a crew of mercs to go retrieve him and the capsule that made the journey possible. Their ship cannot go directly, they must go from planet to planet. Sometimes, they trade for supplies, otherwise they take them. Sound like an old Greek epic?
From the start, these are elite troops, yet they do not dress alike or drill with this equipment. And their transport is cramped- just a bunk area. No exercise room or galley. O.K., the point is to deliver them for action. And did I say the granddaughter (no military experience) is commanding them? But many early SF tales are less realistic.
Each planet presents different challenges. They quickly respond to any provocation, dealing out death without casualties themselves.Their interpersonal relations are contradictory. Sometimes, people come to sudden insights, other times, they never relate. During a climactic battle, the hero narrowly escapes death. The mercs achieve bloody victory.
I could accept the improbabilities, until the last paragraph. Total letdown.
    Very good story
I really enjoyed this book. Having read most if not all of Hammer's Slammers series, and getting to follow another "Slade" was fun.
Interesting story line from David Drake
I really enjoy Mr. Drake's stories. His characters kind of seem real and their sense of humor in the face of danger makes for fun reading. I can lose myself in his books and just enjoy the story. This story was a bit different but still kept me going until the great ending.
    Twenty Warrior Quest
The Voyage (1994) is a SF novel in the Hammer's Slammers series and a sequel toCross the Stars. In the previous volume, Danny came to Hammer with a request. Marilee had requested information on the whereabouts of Don. Danny had traced Don's travels and found that he was last seen on Terzia.
Margritte talked to Terzia and convinced her to let the Don go home.
Terzia gave Don an unused lifeboat to fly to Elysium. The boat worked well until hitting the atmosphere, but then one thruster failed and the boat ran out of fuel. Then the escape capsule parachute was hit by the falling lifeboat.
In this novel, Edward Slade is the son of Tom and Marilee Slade and the nephew of Don Slade. After Don married Marilee, Ned was allowed to attend the Frisian Military Academy. He is a Reserve Ensign and has served with the planetary forces in pacification work.
Lissea Doormann is the daughter of Grey and Duenna Doormann. She is the Captain of the Swift and the head of the expedition to Pancahte.

    Innovative touches
It seems Kris goes from one mess into another one in each edition of the series. Penny has returned after finding the home world of the raiders. Kris and squadron are off to uncover their secrets. Sampson and a group of mutineers steal a ship and set off on their own with Kris in pursuit. Kris is lead into a new mess, a system with a planet with cat people with nuclear weapons and several opposing clans are being attacked by what Kress calls the bug eyed aliens with the goal of wiping another sentient civilization out of existence. Kris and Squadron are ready to prevent total annihilation.
The book has lots of action including ship maneuvering and fleet combat. Kriss role has changed with her promotion to Vice Admiral; she now controls the entire squadron rather than just one ship. As the book ends King Raymond sends more ships to help and a promotion for Kris to full Admiral. Nellie is still my favorite and she is as sassy and smart as ever in this story. Dina Pearlman narrates the series.
Sex. War, and BEM's (Bug Eyed Monsters); Oh my...
This is a continuation of the Kris Longknife series. It has a good solid story line and is a solid continuation of the series. The narration is very good. if you are a fan of the series then this is a good fun read
    Best entry of late
I continue to enjoy Kris' adventures. I liked the mix of politics and action in this one. What I particularly like is that this part of the series covers what happens after the big battle win and what problems that poses. So many books just stop before that point. I admit that some of the coincidences seem rather 'convenient' but that is the way of writers and I don't find that too off putting. Ms Pearlman continues to provide pleasant listening and her characterization continue to impress. Just one point on the recital, which I would say was 99.9 but, please Ms Pearlman, the word is VICEroy and most certainly not viCEROY. As an expat Englishman living in the US I am learning to deal with the pronunciation of US English but I can find nobody here who agrees with Ms Pearlman's version. After all, the word comes from vice - adjunct and royal, i.e. and adjunct to the Queens rule of India.
This is a small thing, I know, but it really does grate!
    Enough nit picking.
Difficult to recommend this to a reader new to the series but, IMHO, a very good listen indeed.
    Excellent addition to the series.
I have every audio book in the series. This another series I enjoy and have listened to more than once. While I did not like the Vicky Peterwald series... Here the author has returned to a more tried and true action bases formula...

From the author of The Slaver Wars comes a new military science fiction series. To the Kleese, the Earth is nothing more than a planet full of conscripts to fight in their numerous wars of aggression. The Kleese are one of three large Galactic Empires that control the majority of the galaxy. To them, Earth is an extremely dangerous planet due to the aggressiveness of the humanoid species that inhabits it. The humans that inhabit Earth will make excellent conscripts, but something must be done to prevent them from expanding out into the galaxy.
To the Kleese the solution is simple, take the conscripts they need and then destroy the planet. Mason Randle controls the Smithfield Mining Corporation. His main headquarters is inside the asteroid Vesta. The Kleese know nothing about what resides inside of the asteroid and the role it will play in saving the human race. Lieutenant Wade Nelson is a marine taken as a conscript by the Kleese. His primary goal is to find a way back to Earth. In the meantime, he will fight in the wars the Kleese are involved in until he knows enough to take the fight to the Kleese themselves. He will bid his time in the hope that someday he will find a way back home for himself and his marines.

    Old Tyme Science Fiction
    MORE THAN AMPLE CHEST
A lot has been said about the narrator and the speed in which he reads. You might want to check the sample to see if it is a problem for you. I had no problem with it, matter of fact I preferred it for the reading of this story. This story does not contain any great intellectual prose, no character development, no romance and no flowery overly descriptive language. Like Sci-Fi of old, it is straight and to the point, with no bells and whistles. Slowing down would have added nothing and just made it longer and boring. He actually sounded very talented and he put much in to it.
THE EARTH WILL SURVIVE, BUT HUMANITY WILL NOT
I did listen and enjoy the story from start to finish. I usually prefer some character development, but occasionally something like this hits the spot. I enjoyed the planning and strategizing. I enjoyed the concept and how it played out. It reminded me of B.V. Larson's writing. It is not going to win any prizes, but it entertains.
WE WILL MOURN THE DEAD WHEN THE FIGHTING IS DONE.
Solid story with great voices, read too fast.
The two books in this series are written well, and the narrator does a great job individualizing how each character appears in tone and accent. However, the pace of reading is too quick and can be distracting. To be honest, if the vocal characterization wasn't so good, I would have given the performance just two stars and docked the overall score as well.
I recommend listeners grab the sample before purchasing. If you can overcome the pace of the reading, this is a pretty good book.
Whats up with the speed reading.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He read too fast. its like he was reading from a report rather than telling a story. Just way too fast.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
no the narrator read way too fast for me to even paint a picture in my mind of what was happening. Forget it. i will read the book.
    fast talker/reader
    What disappointed you about Destruction?
so far the guy is speed reader, with no pauses and no real stops, just speed reading .

An epic interstellar tale of war from master of science fiction.
One more tour on the red.Maybe my last.
They made their presence on Earth known 13 years ago.
Providing technology and scientific insights far beyond what mankind was capable of. They became indispensable advisors and promised even more gifts that we just couldn't pass up. We called them Gurus.
It took them a while to drop the other shoe. You can see why, looking back.
It was a very big shoe, completely slathered in crap.
They had been hounded by mortal enemies from sun to sun, planet to planet, and were now stretched thin - and they needed our help.
And so our first bill came due. Skyrines like me were volunteered to pay the price. As always.
These enemies were already inside our solar system and were moving to establish a beachhead, but not on Earth.
    On Mars.
    Critic Reviews:
"Not for those who prefer their space opera simple-minded, this beautifully written tale where nothing is as it seems will please readers with a well-developed sense of wonder." (Publisher's Weekly on Hull Zero Three)
"Hull Zero Three is a grand adventure of scientific discovery in the tradition of Orphans of the Sky and Rendezvous with Rama - by turns chilling and touching, it poses challenging questions about what it means to be human." (Charles Stross)
"Packed with adventure and incident...and conveyed with gritty realism." (Kirkus on War Dogs)

    Yes! It well catch you.
Would you listen to War Dogs again? Why?
Yes! Little things missed. Underpinning psychology is great, and provides thought provoking ideas.
What did you like best about this story?
    Some sense of truth.
What about Jay Snyders performance did you like?
    Didn't overdue the female parts.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Sure, but had to break it up.
    Any additional comments?
    Make this a series, please!
intro to a new universe and not much else
Unsatisfying. Story raises many questions and resolves precious few of them. Character development minimal. New science fiction concepts minimal. Seems like a military sci-fi, but military action minimal. Appears to be solely an introduction to a new universe. My time would have been much better spent revisiting Starship Troopers.
    Interesting Intro to a Series
Would you consider the audio edition of War Dogs to be better than the print version?
No, nothing beats a book in your hands, but I did enjoy the story and the performance via audio.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed the story line. It kept me interested and wanting more.
Have you listened to any of Jay Snyders other performances before? How does this one compare?
I enjoyed the narrator. He did a good job with the story and the characters. So far, he is my favorite narrator.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I understand other reviewers frustration with the lack of sci fi or military sci fi. The story does not contain much pure sci fi. It also is clearly leading the reader to expect more details and story to come. I found the military parts of the story a bit much at times, but that is just personal preference. It's not that it was poorly written. Those points aside, I did enjoy the story and found myself eager to hear more. It contained interesting concepts and characters were beginning to be developed more fully.

    Publisher's Summary:
Frank Herbert's last published novel is a charming and witty science fiction adventure coauthored with his son Brian.
What if the entire universe were the creation of alien minds? After an unfortunate spaceship accident, the hedonistic human Lutt Hansen, Jr., finds himself sharing his body and mind with a naïve alien dreamer. Together the two must survive dangers, schemes, and assassination attempts - but can they survive each other?

Maybe this earth should be deleted
The premise was original and had a lot of promise. Even the story itself was quite engaging. I thought that the writing had a good flow and the style and narration was great.
Unfortunately, not a single character in the book is even remotely likable. They're not even deeply flawed enough to be interesting as character studies. They're just superficial, self-centered and mildly sociopathic. I thought that there would be some deep self-discovery leading to transformations, but that never came.
Good writing should invoke something in the reader and, in that, this was successful. However, I'm just not sure that deep apathy towards the characters was what the author was going for.
Could have been so much better
What would have made Man of Two Worlds better?
If it had been slightly tighter, faster paced. With warmer more accessible characters.
Would you ever listen to anything by Frank Herbert and Brian Herbert again?
    Yes I love Frank Herbert
Did Scott Brick do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Mr. Brick is the voice of Herbert for me
    Couldn't finish it
Too boring, the thought of 12 more hours of this pains me. The narration was a bit awkward to follow when multiple characters were talking back and forth.
Could have been so much more
I did like the premise for this book but I didn't get what I was hoping for..
I didn't like the characters. They were petty and selfish or dumb and naive. The book is pretty much a politic and corporate intrigue in a futuristic setting. They were such extremes to the personalities I had a hard time identifying with anyone. The Dreans could have been so cool, but they were mostly boring.
If I hadn't goten the book on sale i would have return it.
    unlikable characters
It was a great premise but by the 7 hour matk, I hated the main character Lot so much, I quit listening and returned the book. I couldn't stick it out anymore. He's in an alien's body and yet he's in control. I found it completely unbelievable that a scion of a race who imaged humanity couldnt kick a narcissistic journalist out of his head. Even half trained, that should have been child's play. There was no attempt to make it believable either. The story would have been more believable if the Dreen was in control and had to ape human. The reverse is a trite tale of one jerk getting what he wants at the expense of a naive kid. Not an enjoyable read.
