    Publisher's Summary:
Loosely based on Larry Niven's 1973 novella Flash Crowd, Red Tide continues to examine the social consequences of the impact of having instantaneous teleportation, where humans can instantly travel long distances in milliseconds. This is a theme that has fascinated the author throughout his career and even appears in his seminal work, Ringworld, where the central character celebrates his birthday by instantly teleporting himself to different time zones, extending his birthday. The author also discusses the impact of such instantaneous transportation in his essay "Exercise in Speculation: The Theory and Practice of Teleportation".
Larry Niven is joined by two younger writers, Brad R. Torgersen and Matthew J. Harrington, as they take on this challenging idea and further develop the theories and concepts that Niven originally presented in Flash Crowd.

    Poorly narrated
Would you try another book from Blaze Ward and/or Matt Weight?
I enjoyed the story of the first two a lot, and that does give B.W. some line, but this book was not as good in story and the narration is poor. I might give B.W one more chance, but especially the poor narration means this will only happen if I am unable to find any other book to listen to at that time.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narration is monotone and with a tempo set by a metronome. Poor acting from Matt Weight means the characters are harder to separate in your mind, especially when the story is so short and new ones are published with considerable time between them. All characters sound the same as M.W. does not vary his tone.
Considering the hefty price (1 credit) for a 3 hour book, I would at least expect a better narration. There are plenty of great actors preforming other scifi books to choose from.

In Alberta, Canada, at the foot of Dead Horse Mountain, a space capsule is discovered - a capsule that shouldn't exist. Thirty years earlier, Dr. Jan Lee, American entrepreneur and space tourist, purportedly destroyed this craft when he blew up the International Space Station in an act of unexplained sabotage. That event has since inspired conspiracy theories ranging from espionage to alien invasion.
Special Agents Lauren Madison and Ellis Cole have been assigned to investigate. But inside the capsule they find an even greater mystery: the remnants of a three-decade-old time-messaging experiment that could, within days, usher in a new era of manned space travel - or ignite an unimaginable disaster.

    Intriguing.
This was quite interesting and intriguing, though got bogged down in details at times.
The blurb pretty much says it all so here's my thoughts. Character wise, I really liked Special Agents Lauren Madison and Ellis Cole. They make a good team and their banter was fun to listen to. The science guys were well written and researched. They are uber smart and quite daunting!
The plot was, at times hard to follow when they got into the nitty gritty of the time travel, but also interesting and thought provoking. I also liked how the story is told from the past and present. It all wraps up nicely in the end.
In all, a good listen. I wanted a little more character development though. I felt like they all stayed the same and didn't grow. Other than that, It's a good book and I'm glad I listened to it.
Paul Heitsch was amazing. This isn't the first book I've listened to that's narrated by him and it won't be my last. He is clear and concise and easy to listen to and puts his all into his performance.
*I received this for review, this in no way affects my thoughts.*
This time-bending thriller will have you asking ?s
In Landfall, we follow two Special Agents as they discover more then they thought they would when they come across a crashed space capsule. A capsule that was thought to have been destroyed when the space station blew up nearly 30 years ago. Follow Lauren Madison and Ellis Cole as they discover what really happened on that fateful day nearly 30 years ago and try and prevent WWIII at the same time.
Paul Heitsch does the narration for this and he has a great voice for a thriller novel. It's pacing is great and he just has a way of becoming the characters. I've listened to books that he's narrated before and I will continue to seek out his books because he does such a great job with them. Quality was perfect, listened very smooth with no hiccups at all.
The story, while confusing due to the time-changing aspect of it was a blast. I like the ideas that the authors writes about within, they are very "this could happen." Which, to me, makes a story just that much more interesting.
The two main characters had really great chemistry, both seperate and together. I hope that McWilliams will write other stories with these two.
I always enjoy a 6 hour run-time audiobook because there's enough time to develop characters, find out who the enemie(s) are, and conclude. Usually this "conclusion" is just a "end of part 1" type. Not with Landfall, which makes my heart flutter with excitement.

A new planet. A new battle. Same war.
After barely surviving his last tour on Mars, Master Sergeant Michael Venn finds himself back on Earth in enforced isolation. Through a dangerous series of operations, he returns to Mars to further his investigation into the Drifters - ancient artifacts suddenly reawakened on the red planet.
But another front in the war leads his team to make the difficult journey to Saturn's moon, Titan. Here, in the cauldron of war, hides new truths about the Drifters, the origin of life in our solar system, and the plans of the supposedly benevolent Gurus, who have been "sponsoring" and supporting humanity in their fight against outside invaders.
Killing Titan is the second book in the epic interstellar War Dogs trilogy from master of science fiction Greg Bear.

    Some Bad Acid Trip
Existential, metaphysical, nihilist...take your pick. Hard to follow Michael Venn's "trip" through a war on Mars then Titan. He and others are evidently "infected" with a green prefer on Mars that allows them to communicate with Bugs a now extinct race that, according to Bear, seeded Mars and Earth.
Much of these two books are Venn's trying to describe. . . stuff.
If you're into psychedelia, War Dogs and its companion books are the right place to be. I like my stories concrete and easy to visualize, so these two books were a struggle.

Love Greg Bear epic Sci fi but this is my most disliked book series. Style of writing is different and not fast paced and book is filled with lots of crap and slang and "skyrine speak". Whereas the characters in most Greg Bear stories feel/sound/appear to be your mental equal or smarter, this book is written from the perspective of idiots. Everyone in the book isn;t on their A game. Its like reading AC.Clark's Rescue Party. I'll read the next book just to see the ideas that come out but I am already not liking where its going.
    A treasure for our time
is Greg Bear. In this, the second of the War Dogs trilogy, he begins to ask the questions that none dared ask in the first. Held in the thrall of the Gurus, we traded our identity and our heritage for mere snippets of knowledge. I anxiously await true knowledge for these protagonists, as well as the Antagonists, in the conclusion. Recommended!

For many years, Murdock, Ashe, and other members of the Time Patrol have contended with threats to our time continuum, none more deadly than the alien Baldies, who hate other high-tech civilizations and want to destroy Earth. Evidence of time travel has been found in ruins dating to the ancient world...in the legendary realm of Atlantis. So Murdock, Ashe, Eveleen Riordan, and other Time Patrollers deck themselves out as foreign traders to discover whether something is amiss in Atlantis. They find that the Baldies are there, as evidenced by sophisticated, high-tech equipment, whose purpose it is impossible to fathom. As they try to derail the Baldies' plot, the Time Patrollers realize that time is running out on their mission, when Atlantis is shaken by tremors that presage a cataclysm that may be the disaster that sank the fabulous island state. But they must be sure they act to preserve, not destroy, history - and if they're wrong, it'll be too late...for them and for Earth's future.

But as their greed spirals and the undead close in, their haven for waiting out the end of the world becomes the last battleground for survival. And there is nowhere left to hide.
    Members Reviews:
    Not All That Good
I know this is a Romero zombie story, but it's really not that good. The characters are as flat as paper, and the 1970s-ish-ness of everything (characters, plot, action, thoughts) is rather boring. Characters do and say things that make no sense whatsoever. They are stereotypically what you'd expect from a B grade movie made in the 70s.
Kudos to the narrator, though, as he did an excellent job of reading the story, which otherwise I probably would have quit listening and retuned the book. Even so, after the first hour, I almost returned it, as it really isn't worth the time to listen to it. The only reason I chugged through it was because it's considered a classic and provides perspective on the zombie stories that come after it. That, and I bought it on sale.
I didn't specifically remember the movie, so I reviewed it and it's the same level of 60s-70s cheesiness.
the novelization is a lackluster affair
George A. Romero is the grandfather of the zombie genre, and perhaps the most influential filmmaker of all-thing zombies. His influence has shone down upon pop culture in the nearly-forty years that followed the release of his movie, Dawn of the Dead. You can see it all around you right now with The Walking Dead in comics and on TV, Jonathan Maberrys terrific Rot & Ruin series, Brian Keenes The Rising, and Stephen Kings Cell. I doubt that without Romero any of these latter stories would measure up quite as well. They are each a product of a very prolific history that traces back to the Romero movies.
So, its more than a bit of a shame that I found the novelization of Dawn of the Dead to be so tepid. While Romero is a fine filmmaker, his work as a novelist, along with co-writer Susanna Sparrow, leaves quite a lot to be desired. Originally published in 1978, the narrative holds up rather well and there are only a few anachronistic elements to remind you how many decades have passed since it was written. We get a brief nod to President Carter and, later, a huge twenty-one inch TV set that our survivors have to lug up the stairs. My primary issue boils down to the writing itself, though. Stylistically, its a mess. Character viewpoints shift on a whim, as if to capture the frenetic nature of a zombie apocalypse however, the prose is fairly languid and wordy, which slows things down tremendously. And this being a zombie novel, we get plenty of references to the undead but with nary a change in descriptors, and I lost count of how many times the authors referred to them simply as ghouls. Its a lot, though. A lot.
With a seven-hour run time, this audiobook recording feels overly longer and much too ponderous.

    Publisher's Summary:
With deeply moving human drama, nail-biting suspense - and bold speculation informed by a degree in physics - C. A. Higgins spins a riveting science fiction debut guaranteed to catapult listeners beyond their expectations.
Serving aboard the Ananke, an experimental military spacecraft launched by the ruthless organization that rules Earth and its solar system, computer scientist Althea has established an intense emotional bond - not with any of her crewmates but with the ship's electronic systems, which speak more deeply to her analytical mind than human feelings do. But when a pair of fugitive terrorists gain access to the Ananke, Althea must draw upon her heart and soul for the strength to defend her beloved ship.
While one of the saboteurs remains at large somewhere onboard, his captured partner - the enigmatic Ivan - may prove to be more dangerous. The perversely fascinating criminal whose silver tongue is his most effective weapon has long evaded the authorities' most relentless surveillance - and kept the truth about his methods and motives well hidden.
As the ship's systems begin to malfunction and the claustrophobic atmosphere is increasingly poisoned by distrust and suspicion, it falls to Althea to penetrate the prisoner's layers of intrigue and deception before all is lost. But when the true nature of Ivan's mission is exposed, it will change Althea forever - if it doesn't kill her first.
    Editorial Reviews:
"The stakes in this story are high - life and death, rebellion and betrayal - and debut novelist Higgins continually ratchets up the tension...." (Kirkus Reviews)
    Critic Reviews:
"Absolutely brilliant.... This is science fiction as it is meant to be done: scientific concepts wedded to and built upon human ideals." (Seanan McGuire, New York Times best-selling author of the October Daye series)
    Members Reviews:
    Psychologically Gripping Space Opera
Lightless is a psychologically driven novel that focuses on its characters more than anything else, so if you prefer your space operas fast and furious, this book may prove to be too slow for your speed. The story unfolds layers at a time as readers try to piece together whats real and whats not as the characters wage psychological warfare against one another. As the story soldiers on, you begin to see frayed edges of the main characterstheir weaknesses, their prejudices, their fatal flaws. Despite their beliefs that theyre good at what they do, they fall apart. The ships continuing problems further aggravates this by playing into the familiar theme of man versus machine, which creates a tense backdrop that culminates to a chaotic, explosive end. Higgins employs the laws of thermodynamics to frame this narrative, using it to allude to the environment on the ship and the interactions of the characters with one another, their interactions with the galaxy/power structure at large, and their interactions with the ship itself.
"The amount of work done in one direction is the same as the amount of heat transferred in the other, or, the internal energy of an isolated system is constant.

    Still hating Seafort.
Tried to give this series another chance. Seafort still whining and abusing subordinates.
Wonderful riff on the Horatio Hornblower theme
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have many times over, along with the admonishment to first read C.S. Forrester's Horatio Hornblower, and then Weber's Honor Harrington after this saga. For this particular volume I had them a proper pronunciation guide as well (see below).
Outside of the basis in Naval tradition, standing for what is right at any cost, this saga elegantly provides us with an exemplification of the qualities we all want to see in our heroes. Setting aside, word for word this is ripping good entertainment.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Nick, of course. It's the evolution of the character's story all the way through to Children of Hope that makes his saga that much more endearing.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Vikas does phenomenal work giving unique voice to each of the characters, and continues that throughout all of his narration of the Seafort Saga. HOWEVER: Good Lord Man, it's "[truh-fal-ger}" NOT "[trahy-fuh l] [gar]"!!!!11one Trafalgar is repeated so many times in this particular volume, hearing it mispronounced over and over caused many a shouting bout in the car as I drove to or from work. Whomever was in charge of Quality Assurance after the fact needs a drubbing too. And it's "[trip-uh-lee]" NOT BLOODY "[tip-oh-lee]". The Libyians would appreciate it if we could get their Capital pronounced correctly as well.I've heard after-the-fact voice overs in other productions, why not here? Someone needs to get on the ball!If it weren't for the repeated and frequent mispronunciations, I'd have given the performance 5 stars. Otherwise, capitol effort Vikas!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It has to be the climax near the end - not giving it away should this be published - when one commits to give all they have as well as the all of others for the ultimate in sacrifices and then to have the need swept away by circumstances.
