  • Why Mothers Stay Silent About Child Loss (And Why Sharing Your Story Matters) | Sasha Braham

    Send Shannon A Note

This week's guest is Sasha Braham, a mother, teacher, and founder of @woowoo_teachersclub and host of the WooWooTeachers Club podcast. In this episode, Sasha shares her experience as an educator and the profound impact her morning meditation has had on her students' achievement.

Sasha also shares her poignant motherhood journey that began with the loss of her daughter at 6 weeks old. She implores us to consider:

Why are we silent about our story? Our losses? Your journey, your story, can help someone else make it through theirs when they see that you’re smiling today in spite of it all. You can be the hope that someone else needs.

Here are this week's key takeaways:

    1. You have to prioritize you. You have to take some time to talk to your soul. 15 minutes can change your whole day. If you are expected to give for hours and hours on end, you have to give to yourself first.
    2. Post-partum depression does not mean you’re weak.  Get up and go get that help. It shows the strength you have when you recognize the struggle and seek the help. You’re not the hero when you’re suffering.
    3. In early postpartum, just be kind to yourself. You’re literally keeping a human alive, on top of recovering from childbirth and pregnancy. Even if you’re not a new mom, you’re still a new mom to that child. It’s a new dynamic. Just be kind to yourself. Give yourself grace, understanding, compassion. Just allow the flow and ease of the situation.
    4. You just don’t need to make it harder for yourself. Go and sit next to yourself, hug her, and tell her how awesome and amazing she is. Tell her, "I love you, and I love where you are in your life." Give her love as if she’s your best friend because it’s all she needs right now.
    5. We’ve all gone through our stuff. It doesn’t mean the path is going to always be roses going forward. There are going to be lessons that we have to learn in this life. If you believe that your soul has chosen this life, then learn the lessons because it’s going to get you to a goal. Lovingly embrace those lessons - even the sad, even the scary. Take it all. It all makes you who you are. You don’t know where that experience is going to be used to help somebody else.
    6. We need to share our experiences; the good, the bad, the ugly. The more our stories  are shared, the more we normalize all the pieces. Your journey, your story, can help someone else make it through theirs when they see that you’re smiling today in spite of it all. You can be the hope that someone else needs.
    7. If you know someone who is experiencing a child loss, that baby, that mother, father, grandparents, etc., deserve to be acknowledged. Be present, have conversations. Don’t be silent for fear of upsetting the person.

  • Why Mothers Need Breathwork to Regulate Their Nervous Systems (Not Just More Willpower) | Michelle Perkin

    Send Shannon A Note

This week's guest is Michelle Perkin. Michelle is the founder of The Breathing Room. As a trauma informed transformational Breathwork facilitator she offers somatic healings in 1:1, groups and monthly sessions. She believes that your breath is your medicine. Her intention is to offer transformation in your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Her sessions are created to empower you, offering you a safe place to explore and become curious. Her mission is to support others in regulating their nervous system and align with a life they are in love with. She shares, "Breathwork has brought me home to myself. I’m here to support you in deepening your own connection."

Trigger Warning: Traumatic birth, unsafe partners and home environments

Here are this week's key takeaways:

    1. Your community and your village are your safety nets, your guiding lights. If you don’t have one, you need to build one. Find the safe people that GET IT.
    2. If you are a safe space, allow people to express their journey to you. If it’s traumatic to someone, it’s traumatic someone. Trauma doesn’t live on a scale, it’s not a game of comparison. Hold space and allow people to have their journey and their perception of it.
    3. It can take time to remember that you are also YOU when you become a mother. You’re not being the best mom you can be if you put yourself on the bottom. You can offer more to your children the more you take care of you. We all get to be taken care of. We all get to be valued.
    4. Our children are our teachers and they have chosen us. What lessons can we learn from them each day?
    5. Being a safe space for your children to thrive in. The level of safety and nervous system regulation go hand in hand. When we’re in survival mode, we’re scared to explore. When we’re in a safe space, we’re tapped into being alive. We explore, we leap, we trust, we’re in the flow, we’re doing life which is what we’re here to do.
    6. “Life is going to get lifey.” Your nervous system will be activated. Learning nervous system regulation gives you control to switch your system back to rest and digest. Breathwork and meditation are fantastic tools for our children to learn.
    7. We do a lot of mind work, but we don’t do a lot of body work. Breathwork is a bottom up approach to that. Our mind will know we’re safe, but our body won’t know. Acknowledging, making space for that, and getting into the body with the breath, will allow that energy to process.
    8. Remember that person outside of a mom needs to be filled up too. Drop the mom guilt. You are entitled to moments to yourself and boundaries with your own children appropriate to their age.

  • Parenting is Not an Emergency with Kristin Schmoke

    Send Shannon A Note

This week's guest is Kristin Schmoke. Kristin is a mother of 4, teacher and certified parent coach.  She is passionate about helping families communicate in a more calm manner, create better connections and enjoy parenting. She reminds us that it’s a-okay to need a little help on our parenting journeys. I hope you enjoy the episode!

    You can find Kristin:

    on Instagram

    on Facebook

    or on her website.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. You can be very involved and good parents and still have a challenging child.
    2. As parents, we set the pace. We set the temperature for the room at that time and for the whole relationship.
    3. Awareness in parenting is key. Be aware of consistent situations, environments, or times of day that are triggering for you.
    4. Parenting is not an emergency. You don’t have to deal with each situation right now. What you need to deal with first is your emotions and regulating you first.
    5. The power of the pause is priceless. Recognizing “I need a moment,” because you can do damage if you don’t, and then you have to go repair that damage.  Reflect on, “What are my goals in this situation?” My goal is to find peace. How can I find peace?
    6. Parents are the biggest teacher in their child’s life. They have the most impact. If you can teach your child at home what it’s like to have a good solid relationship, give kindness, show compassion, help others - these are the lessons that they will carry with them for life.
    7. As a mom, take care of yourself in the little moments of the day. Find something you can say to yourself that reminds you how much you’re loved. Listen to a favorite song that makes you feel good. Go outside and take a couple of breaths. Moms are expected to carry a lot, and you don’t have to do it all. It’s okay.
    8. If you’re experiencing challenges in parenting, it’s okay to ask for help. You’re not failing, in fact, you’re farther ahead than those who don’t.

  • Why Mothers Struggle to See Themselves as Beautiful (And How Boudoir Photography Helps) | Tina Aquila Posteraro

    Send Shannon A Note

This week's guest is Tina Aquila Posteraro, a Vancouver, B.C. based luxury boudoir photographer who reminds us how beautiful and whole we already are. Tune in for the juiciest conversation about self-love, self-appreciation, and tapping into the magic of our femininity.

Here are this week's key takeaways:

    1. It’s not the reflection in the mirror that’s the problem. It’s your perception of your reflection. Zoom out. The big picture is so beautiful. You are a masterpiece, a work of art.
    2. We have to learn how to love ourselves again (or for the first time) for the sake of the little humans we’re raising. It’s important we lead by example that self-love should be the norm.
    3. It’s so important to get back in touch with the feminine part of you that wants to receive rather than always give. The part that wants to indulge themselves in whatever magic is there in that moment, and outside of that moment.
    4. Our bodies are not trends. We try to shrink ourselves when the trend is skinny. We try to change our bodies to be more curvy, and back and forth with the trends. What are we chasing? At the end of the day, what we want is to feel loved and accepted. And as women with what we’ve been exposed to, we think it has everything to do with what we look like. Trends will always change and your body is not a trend. We have to learn to love ourselves now.
    5. Show up as yourself and it’s all okay. You’ll repel the people who aren’t for you and attract the people who are for you. To be around people who love and accept us, we have to show up as who we really are.
    6. You are whole exactly the way you are. You are beautiful exactly the way you are.
    7. The way we do one thing is the way we do everything. If you don’t believe in yourself in one area of your life, you can carry that over into other areas of your life. It’s never just one part of us, it’s all of us.
    8. Investing in yourself is so important. It affirms, I am worth spending this time or money on. You’re telling the universe, I go first, when you take the leap and have the courage to invest in yourself.

  • Come Back Into Your Body w/ Abby Hildebrand

    Send Shannon A Note

HEY! Did You know I’m hosting a FREE Design Your Maternity Leave Workshop on Tuesday, 10/10 at 1pm EST? Register here!

This week's guest is Abby Hildebrand. Abby is a Trauma-Informed Breathwork Facilitator, Human Development Specialist, and Perinatal Mental Health Advocate. Having been a published author at the ripe old age of 10 (okay, so it was for an elementary school poetry contest, but still!), she has woven the soul of her story into her many careers, and despite being only 5’2”, has had the opportunity to flex her growth muscles on all these journeys, most notably in the newest role of Mama. Her mission is to facilitate the healing process for others, guiding them to breathe into their own capacity to heal themselves and take control of their emotional and physical health. Her approach is collaborative and grounded through a Trauma-Informed lens, empowering clients in building a path to wellness, one step at a time. Focusing her practice primarily on supporting caregivers, she offers individualized coaching and corporate group classes through her company, Wellness Creek Consulting.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Breathwork encourages us to pause and be. It helps us to bring ourselves in, ground, and center. Breathwork is consciously shifting the rhythm of our breath to support different experiences and different systems within. It helps us clear away the debris to get to the root of how our nervous system is/is not responding to things around.
    2. You can model breathwork with your children. They naturally respond to breath patterns to support them. Their bodies will naturally help bring their systems down. You can get playful with it to help support them. Their bodies can memorize the response and the down regulation.
    3. Tune in to what’s happening in your body. When you regulate your system, your babies and children will respond. You can support and operate your family from such a different level by just tuning in.
    4. Get your resources lined up before you have your baby. You don’t want to find out about these a year after the fact. You are deserving of the services regardless of your circumstance. We are all deserving of this support, this village, and this care.
    5. You change physiologically when you have a baby. You can’t go back to the same person you were before and that’s okay. Thank her for bringing you to this point, say goodbye, grieve that part of you, and step into the new person you get to carry forward.
    6. We’ve developed such a detachment to our bodies. Use breath, use yoga, use time in nature to get quiet and get tuned in and that’s a way to support the community around you by getting tuned in and turned on. The ripple effect is huge.
    7. YOU HAVE TO EXHALE TO INHALE. YOU HAVE TO LET GO TO RECEIVE. Give yourself space, give yourself pause. Because you set one thing down, you don’t have to pick something else up.
    8. We are inherently worthy and we are not the things that we do.

  • Why Mothers Lose Their Identity After Baby (And How to Find Yourself Again) | Sarah Schafer

    Send Shannon A Note

Sarah is a teacher turned coach for mothers who, after her own journey through postpartum depression and anxiety, is now a coach with a passion for helping mamas find their identity after baby. Our work is so aligned and this conversation is so important for mamas to be, new mamas, and experienced mamas alike to hear. I hope you enjoy the episode.

Here are this week’s key takeaways:

    1. Admitting that we’re struggling to ourselves is the first step.
    2. When you find that you’re struggling, ask for help in any way. People want to help. Start with small requests and work your way up to bigger asks if you have to. Keep track of what you need so if someone asks, you’re prepared with responses.
    3. The idea of purpose for moms is so heavy. There doesn’t have to be ONE thing. Living your life doing what you enjoy is living in your purpose.
    4. It is okay to set things down that no longer serve you. Beliefs, relationships, career goals, if it doesn’t light you up, let it go.
    5. When it comes to hobbies, find something that lights you up inside. It doesn’t have to go anywhere, you can do an activity just for the sake of doing it. When figuring out what you want to do, ask yourself what did you want to do as a kid that you had to set down, or have you always wanted to do but have never been able to do?
    6. Friends, if you’ve been listening you’ve heard this recurring theme of meditation. If you’re not meditating, please find a form that resonates with you and give it a try. Take the time to just be and exist.
    7. There is so much growth in motherhood, and although parts of it do, in fact, suck, the woman you will become is so amazing.
    8. You’re doing a good job. Even if it’s not to your standard, you’re trying. You’re doing a good job.

  • "What else is possible?" with Nina Lockwood

    Send Shannon A Note

I'm so honored to share this week's episode with my guest, Nina Lockwood. Nina is a trained  psychotherapist, energy medicine practitioner, life coach and artist. She helps women who are overwhelmed and overburdened but knowing there’s got to be a better way to get the most out of life. With decades of experience in psychology, energy medicine, and the wisdom traditions, she firmly believes in looking within oneself for the most honest, authentic answers to living life with more ease and joy. Tune in for the juiciest conversation where Nina implores us to consider, "What else is possible?"

Here are this week's key takeaways:

    1. We’re already built to thrive, the capacity just gets covered over by life and our life experiences. It all comes down to looking within ourselves. We have what it takes.
    2. When you are faced with the opportunity to go in a new direction, come back to the questions, “What’s really important? What really lights me up?” The question is a necessity, it’s our compass that steers us to where we have the natural inclination to be able to express ourselves in a way that feels authentic.
    3. Most people don’t realize that they don’t have to be victims of their thinking. I can’t control what’s coming into my head, but I can control where I put my focus. “What else is possible? What feels authentic and right and focuses on possibility, not impossibility?”
    4. It’s less about doing doing doing and more about being. Our feminine power is so deep. Tapping into a community of women can help us remember who we really are. Our power lies in our divine feminine, not in trying to replicate the masculine energy.
    5. What if we’re already whole, and it’s just that we’ve been taught that we’re broken because we’ve had a certain experience? Your ego can be bruised, but your spirit can never be broken. You still have access to all the potential inside of you.
    6. When we’re feeling off, stop, notice, breathe. We don’t need a 5 step strategy to improve our situation. Pause, put your hand on your heart, and breathe. Taking that moment isn't a luxury, it’s a necessity.
    7. We all have regret, but we all did the best we could in our experiences. As India Arie says, there are no mistakes, just chances we’ve taken.

  • Pivoting + Navigating Grief in Motherhood with Amanda Torres

    Send Shannon A Note

I’m excited to share this week’s episode featuring Amanda Torres. Amanda is a mom, step-mom, newly empty nester and a grandma. She came on to share her motherhood journey and her message to inspire moms as a motivational speaker, and while she did do that, the conversation also flowed into how tapping has helped her navigate the loss of her father. This opened up a whole other conversation about navigating grief in motherhood, a topic that has been on my heart to share recently. I always love to see how these organic conversations unfold and today’s turned into the most beautiful gift. Even if grief isn’t part of your story, there’s good stuff in here for any mom.

Here are this week's key takeaways:

    1. We are so much more than just moms. We often lose ourselves in the minutiae of the day to day. When your kids leave the nest creates a whole new season of unknowing.
    2. It’s okay if your plans change. Pivoting is okay when things don’t pan out or don’t align anymore. Look back at all experiences and identify what you can pull from each of them and how they got you to where you are now.
    3. It’s okay to take the time to pause and reflect - do I want this? Is this what I want for myself and for my family right now? And if that leads you away from your planned path, that’s okay!
    4. In seasons of unknowing - give yourself some grace if you don’t know what your next step is. Step back, and don’t feel the pressure to rush into the next thing. Remind yourself, this is where I am and that’s okay.
    5. Other people’s opinions are none of your business. Do what you need to do to fill your soul. If they’re not paying your bills, they don’t get a say in the matter.
    6. When you make a decision and release the outcome, it will provide. Make the decision.
    7. In navigating grief as a mother: do the things that feel normal. You do what you have to do because you have to keep going. Your kids need you and sometimes that means just going through the motions. Do everything you can to keep your life as normal as possible.
    8. Introduce yourself first. Claim who you are first. You are YOU first. Fill you first and the rest will fall into place.

You can find Amanda on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

  • Why Motherhood Feels So Different for Every Woman (Human Design Explained) | Chantel Porter

    Send Shannon A Note

This week, I'm so excited for our guest, Chantel Porter, to share her wisdom on Human Design. She gives us the origin of Human Design, what it's all about, and how to leverage it in your own lives, especially as a mother. If Human Design is completely new to you, you may want to download your own chart before listening to this episode. Chantel recommends doing so at jovianarchive.com.

    Here are the key takeaways:

    1. Human design can help you come home to yourself. It is your true permission slip to follow your own authority.

    2. Human design is your energetic blueprint. Who you are, your gifts, what you came here to do, and how you're meant to operate. It also shows how your intuition communicates with you, and where you are most susceptible to being conditioned. It shows us all how individually unique we are.

    3. When looking at your chart, start with your authority and your strategy. Your authority is your intuition, strategy is how you make it happen. Trust the inner wisdom within you and following it in the small details.

    4. When studying your chart, pay attention to the colored and uncolored areas. Defined centers (colored areas) show the energy you pump out into the world. Open centers are where you take in energy of others and amplify it. These are the spaces you can feel uncomfortable and areas in which we can feel like we're not good enough.

    5. We're conditioned to think we want things that we may not actually want. You may need far less than what you truly think to feel happy, successful, peaceful. Human design can help you determine what really feels so good based on your design type.

    6. We can unlearn conditioning that does not serve us through learning and understanding our own human design.

    7. Knowing your children's energy types can help you better parent your children and you can help them step into their own power and advocate for their own needs.

    8. Human design is for the children. We have to decondition ourselves so we can raise our children as themselves. We can change the world through our children by allowing them to be who they really are. But first, we have to do it for ourselves.
