  • The voice of reason - With Dr. Bob Forbes #59
Tonight's guest Dr. Bob Forbes has played in a ton of different sports at the young age of 67. It all started with his great love of baseball. Bob and his brother loved it so much they would seldom go on summer vacation because they couldn't stand to miss a game. Then he got into football and at the age of 15, while being the quarterback, his team went 13-0 and won the Maritime championship in Halifax. Acted as player-coach one season because the coach moved on and no one else would coach so Bob played and coached. In the Winters Bob played some hockey but because of a bad asthma problem, his parents didn't want him to play so he ended up skiing. Listen to Bob tell the story about his first set of skis, an excellent story indeed. Bob talks about his start in running and how he was going to run his first marathon in Ottawa and what it was that happens that keeps that from happening right away. He perseveres because now he has run 32 marathons and a dozen or so Boston marathons. Then hear about how Bob acquired the Abbott Six Star Finisher Medal, an incredible achievement. Lastly, we chat about how every year Bob and his daughter go somewhere for a weekend cycling trip, great times. Doctor Bob does much more but you should really listen to the interview and find out what really makes him go.

  • The Bootstrap Boogie - With Mark McColgan #58
Tonight's guest is Mark McColgan, he is very much into Saint John trail running. By his own admission, he isn't the best with his diet but don't be fooled one little bit. Determined and tough Mark was getting into some very long ultra runs and hydration and eating have been problems, sometimes cramping so badly it would affect his race. One year he ran the Gaspesia while being trained very well and had to stop because of hydration. The next year he was just as well trained and came in having done the Keto diet and made it through to the end of the 100km race. Once again while cramping up at km 20 or so his cousin suggested he start taking mustard and after this happened he has been known as the "mustard chugger" Now Mark tries ultras that are a little shorter but is able to do them faster. Mark is a wonderful storyteller and has more than a few great ones to tell. So listen up and hear how he has raised over 5000$ for local groups and people that keep trails upgraded. Now he is a large part of the Saint John Trail running groups, he tells us of his amazing friends that help him keep the evening trail runs fun for all different ages and levels. A fantastic interview with a very passionate person that you won't want to miss. Plus don't miss his interview with the New Leaf Running podcast as well, link below.

  • The pace was all over the place - With Lindsey MacNeil #57
Lindsey MacNeil has some big goals for her running. She has been around running most of her life, from being at her dad's runs when younger to running while she was training for the RCMP to now. The difference is now running is Lindsey's alone time and she loves this very much. Tonight we chat about how a co-worker got her started on her first 10km race. Lindsey talks about a training company that helped keep her accountable called Love Training More. This really helped Lindsey reach her goals and she took off after that. We also talk about some very major knee pain that Lindsey has in 2020, the diagnoses she received and how she got better by not having surgery. After 3 half marathons, Lindsey decided to run her first full marathon in Cape Breton but after Hurricane Dorian blew through and cancelled the event that didn't stop her, no way. She came to Moncton and ran the Resurgo marathon instead in very very windy conditions. Listen to Lindsey talk about her PEI run in 2019 after her marathon and how she surprised her sister Shannon and then finished 2nd in her 5km race, a fantastic acomplishment. Then in Fredericton this year Lindsey sets a huge goal and achieves it. Listen to the passion and the determination and deep down you know Lindsey can do almost anything. Finally, we chat about the run club Lindsey has started and how she has helped 40 or so people go from couch to 5k, a wonderful story. Lindsey also sent us her race report after her Fredericton run this year, we want to share this with you so it will be at the bottom with all the links.

Lindsey MacNeil's race report, Fredericton 2021
    Hi Janet! WOOHOO!!
I am so happy with how it all went. I loved training and I loved the race. That’s all I can ask for! Oh yeah…and that little star beside my name ;)
As requested, here is my recap!

We arrive at the start line area 45 minutes before the start. I am ready! SO nervous, but so ready.

I can’t tell you how awesome but weird it was to line up for a race! It’s been a year and a half!

Horn blows at 7:30 and we’re off!
I struggled to get up to pace because there was a lot of weaving through people due to the narrowness of the street. After a minute or two I’m up to my 5:05 pace. Pace dropped to 4:40 a few times and I caught myself doing that and reeled it back in. I kept hearing you tell me to be so so careful not to go out too fast the first 10K.

I’m at 10 k in the blink of an eye, and I’m thinking gee this marathon is going to fly by so fast- enjoy it all and take it all in!

Right at 10 k I know that it’s time to settle into marathon pace. No problem. I’ve got this!

At 21 k, I am right on pace. 1:46. Perfect!

I make a mental note that I’m in the third portion of my race. That’s exciting! I feel great.

25 k ish I notice my right quad is so tight. My hip flexors also start to get tight so I make a quick stop to stretch. It helps so I keep on going.

Water stops are frequent and I am happy with my decision not to take my hydration vest or water belt. My gels are stashed away in my flat, stretchy Nathan belt. I walk through them like Erin suggested. I stop at each station and alternate water and Gatorade.

The weather is perfect. Literally couldn’t have had more perfect conditions. Wow! Kind of nicer than running in a hurricane 🌀 lol

The boredom didn’t sneak in but the negative thoughts did- I knew they would, and I just let them come to me. This happened to me around 28 k in the first Marathon. Seeing my family gave me the boost I needed!

    32-42.2k

    Homestretch. Giver!
I can’t tell you how many pep talks I gave myself. There were many. I literally talked out loud to myself a few times, and another runner heard and it gave him a boost too. He was stopped and likely was close to hitting the wall. I used all the mental training tactics in my toolbox and I ran with heart! Looking at my watch at 36 k, I realized I had to hoof it! No excuses, no stopping, no stretching, GO! There would be time for that after the race. I was pushing 4:45 the last few km’s.

I know I’m getting close to the finish line when I can hear cheering and lots of noise. I was in the zone!! I tear up a bit as I see the numbers on the sign.

    3:33 and I’m across.

    I did it.

    I DID IT!!!!

Fast forward a few days and I’m still hobbling around sore, but it’s getting better. A little walk with my dog today helped.

I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on training, and how proud of myself I am. I had a lot going on this summer, but I made it happen. I’ve grown a lot as a runner and I’ve learned some valuable lessons. I would not have been able to do this without proper coaching, so I thank you for that!!
I love the marathon build, but it will be quite some time before I commit to running another one. On that note, I’ve signed up for the 5 k at Legs for Literacy on Oct. 24. Aside from my fun run at Disney in November, this will be my last hoorah for 2021 racing.
I have no goal time in mind, but I want it to be a fast one :) I’ve got 5 weeks to train after my 2-week hiatus. What do you think? Doable?

I’m enjoying my time off running but I’m sure I’ll be itching to get back to it soon.

    ✌️

  • The virtual Medavie 5k Championship start soon - With Marc Lalonde #52
Genevieve Lalonde, John Gay headline a strong elite field at the Medavie Canadian 5K Championships that are set to begin

This Saturday, August 28, the 14-day period for submissions of race results in the Medavie Canadian 5K Championship, opens. Hosted by Athletics New Brunswick and Run NB, the event will be raced virtually in 2021 with the event boasting a strong field of top Canadian elite athletes, including several Canadian Olympians.

Headlining the women’s field is Genevieve Lalonde, a Moncton native. Lalonde ran two Canadian records at the Tokyo 2020 Games, including an 11th place finish in the 3000m steeplechase final. The women’s event also includes two other first-time Olympians in Julie-Anne Staehli and Alycia Butterworth. Both athletes have burst on the scene as of late; Staehli is one of the few Canadian women ever to run 5K under 15 minutes while Butterworth just made her Diamond League debut in Eugene, running the third-best Canadian time ever for the steeplechase.

The women’s start list also includes several national and provincial champions including Newfoundlander and marathon mom, Kate Bazeley, veteran Sasha Gollish, former Canadian marathon Champion, Leslie Sexton, and cross-country specialist, Kate Ayers.

Not to be outdone, the men’s start list also features another world-class steeplechaser in John Gay who also competed in Tokyo where he ran a personal best in the heats to book his ticket for his first Olympic final. Gay is capping off a breakout year after winning the Canadian Trials and cracking the Olympic standard in that same race. Gay is flanked by 2x Olympian, and fellow British Columbian, Luc Bruchet. Following the familiar theme, Bruchet is also capping off a breakout season, one which included a massive personal best and ranking him third all-time in Canada over the 5,000M. Charles Philibert-Thiboutot (CPT), an Olympian from the Rio 2016 Games is also running in the event. CPT barely missed out on a second Olympic berth in Tokyo and is coming into the event in flying form.

The men’s start list also includes a number of national champions including Atlantic Canadian and Canadian Cross-Country Champion, Mike Tate, his teammates from the Backroad’s Bandits Connor Black and Parrot-Migas, NAZ Elite runner and NCAA standout, Rory Linkletter, and world record holder for pushing a stroller over a marathon, Calum Neff. • Motion is lotion - With Michael Roy - Part2 #51
In part 2 of Michael's podcast, Diane and I ask some questions and listen to some great stories. We learn that Michael lost 60 pounds thanks to a bet and that bet got his passion back for riding a bicycle. Michael loves open water swimming at Parlee Beach at 6:30 am nothing like an early start. Michael had some back problems and went and seen an Osteopath, the advice was to drink more water and keep on moving and that advice has worked very well for Michael. We also chat about Michael's charity bike ride he is involved in this October 1st for the Lymphedema organization. He is an ambassador for this event and the ride will take them 160km, link is below if you would like to donate or check it out. We talk about some of Michael's podium finishes and his first win at the TriLobster Triathlon in Summerside back in 2016. Michael has projects on the go that he is working on as well, such as project sub 19, which is trying to run 5km in 19 minutes or less. So no matter how you look at it Michael is highly motivated to move and you will not want to miss out on what he has to say.
