  • Your sportier than you think - With Jan carver #67
Jan Carver started out doing a 10,000 a day step challenge and that led to a couch to 5 km run then a 10 km and the next thing Jan knew she was doing marathons.
After 4 marathons Jan has decided to do the London marathon this year to make it number 5. Our very own Diane met Jan through something called the K times 365 project
in 2014. This group promotes staying active for 365 days preferably outside. Jan also talks to us about how for the first 12 weeks of running she only ran in the dark because she lacked confidence and didn't want anyone to see her. Soon that changed and as Jan gained more confidence she would run more and more. In 2018 Jan and her husband ran in a 100 miler, 24-hour team relay and on the last 10-mile lap they ran together. This event is named the Grim Reaper and the incredible thing is her longest race was a half marathon at this time, amazing. Now Jan runs with her run club and they meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and Wednesdays are now her non-negotiables, she seldom misses a run with her group.
But Jan does, even more, she is now certified as a run coach and helps others achieve their goals, plus she leads new runners in couch to 5k's. Mental health is very big in her running group
and they connect mental health and running health together. With Covid, this is even more of a thing so running is very important to Jan. In order to help control some of her own anxiety Jan would go and sleep outside in a tent or hammock just to get away from everything. This helps Jan to feel less cabin fever and helps her to connect more with the outdoors. Put in some rock climbing and everything else that she does and it's easy to see Jan is a very motivated individual.

  • Jolly Old Saint Nicholas joins us this evening - With Santa Claus #66
What a fantastic way to end our season by speaking with Santa Claus himself all the way from the North pole. Diane and I ask him about keeping in shape for the big day and what Santa likes to eat. We ask about his wonderful reindeer and Rudolph of course, what they like to eat and if Rudolph will be leading Santa's team this year. We talk a little about magic and how much Santa really knows about the boys and girls and how Santa really does check his list twice. His family is very busy but Santa informs us about how he takes the time every year to listen to his favourite Christmas songs and Christmas movies. So get the kids and a cup of hot chocolate, sit back and listen to Santa. It may be the relaxing moment we all need.

  • Just keep moving, it's a win win - With Jessica Boudreau #65
Tonight's guest, Jessica Boudreau is married and mom of two plus she has been a dental hygienist for 34 years. As a child, her upbringing was to keep active and Jessica has done that and more. She lives in a small community on Cape Breton Island and when she started running Jessica would use the hydro poles to help keep track of her distance. Jessica tells us how she was nervous starting out and would pretend to be walking as cars would go by but that quickly ended. She does kayaking and paddleboarding plus has been a swimmer her entire life. Jessica ran her first marathon back in 2009 in Halifax and finished only 4 minutes off from qualifying for Boston. She learned how to breathe properly and then in 2010 hit her number in the PEI marathon and made it to Boston. Always looking for a new challenge Jessica started doing Triathlons. It was a natural progression for her. Then in 2019, Jessica was diagnosed with Classic Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She underwent Kimo and radiation but kept on running and doing charity events. A truly inspiring story that you won't want to miss, listen to Jessica's passion and how she believes in always climbing that mountain. We believe your really going to enjoy this episode.

  • A circuit breaker will not stop me - With Paula Murnaghan #64
Tonight we speak with a fellow group running member about what motivated her to run her first marathon as a virtual Boston marathon. Paula Murnaghan wanted to run a marathon by the time she was 40 and a plan happened but her marathon of choice was cancelled via Covid. Then the option for the virtual Boston Marathon occurred and Paula jumped at the chance. She started a trend because a lot of our group followed her and signed up as well. She started training and had a pretty serious injury occur and that sidelined her for several weeks. Paula was given the green light with about 6 weeks left until the marathon date and that's when Paula got to work. She trained hard and started doing bigger mileage very quickly. She didn't have time to waste and before you knew it race day was very close. Then we find out about our local circuit breaker that could have stopped Paula as well but not a chance. Paula wouldn't give up and you can hear her inspiring story as she takes us through the process. You just can't keep a determined individual down.

  • Take the pressure off - With Donna Arseneau and Lesley Corbett #63
Donna and Lesley had decided to do their first marathon, the decision was made to do this via the virtual Boston marathon 2021. A training plan was well thought out and put on paper and along the way injuries plus covid plus other things created a difficult environment to get enough training in to complete their marathon goals. Donna and Lesley decided to take the pressure off but instead of just giving up they took it to an entirely new level, they walked the marathon. At first, it might seem crazy but when you step back and think about it this does make a lot of sense. We talk about their training and the distances they put in plus how they stayed motivated during the walk. We talk about family and friends that were out to greet them and we discuss their overall experience. So instead of worrying about if you are going to be able to complete a big goal in running, why not just walk it? Once a marathoner always a marathoner.

  • Mood follows actions - With Rick Canning part2 #62b
We finish off with Rick Canning's Bromont 100 experience and what finally had him decide to call his race for that day. Rick goes over the questions he asks himself to make sure it's not a decision he will regret later. We also hear that Rick's stomach is his weak point and what he plans to do to help fix the issue. This is very interesting because we know so many people that have these types of issues while running. Plus we talk about rick's dizziness and what he plans to try to work on this issue. We also find out that part of the reason Rick does 100-mile runs is to feel alive and the 50-mile race only gives him a small taste of this. Then we get into his training plan for next year's Bromont race, As a very passionate runner of these trail runs there is no way Rick could say no. Next, we talk some about covid and how important it is to get active again and just get back out there. Sound advice, it's been tough for a great many people just to get going again. Lastly, we talk about the science and habit of behaviour change and what could help you make the changes you want to make, absolutely fascinating. We also want to make sure we share all of Rick's links so here they are below.

  • Once you find your passion, nothing can stop you - With John Collicott #60
Tonight's guest John Collicott was a lifeguard at one point and a swim coach later on, he loved coaching. Then one day he went out 2.5km and made a paint mark on the road and decided to use that as his 5 km training. He couldn't believe how long the 2.5km was taking and was positive that he must have passed his mark. There it was a short while later right where he had made it. That got John started, and he was running 10ks, half marathons and then one day John decided it was time to run more distance. His first marathon was in Halifax and his first real trail run was the Wascally Wabbit in Nova Scotia. Once John started he knew that trail running was what he really wanted to do. We also go over some of the challenges that John has faced and how he is dealing with them now. Plus John tells us how he created his own 100-mile run and how badly he wanted to finish it. John is a great storyteller so come on in and listen to the 20-year Paramedic talk about how he stays motivated.
