  • It's a cool lifestyle - With Sarah Lamos and Mark McColgan #84
Tonight's episode is partly about Saint John trail running and mainly about getting outside in a friendly setting with other people and enjoying the great outdoors. Our special guests Mark McColgan and Sarah Lamos are back with us tonight to talk about that very subject with all our listeners. Both have been on our show before, Mark in episode 58 and Sarah in episode 47. Even if you have listened to these episodes before you may want to go back and listen to their stories once again, both are excellent. The passion that they both have for their running community is outstanding and we at Motivate to Move are inspired by both of them. They both lead groups on trail runs and are very active in their community, setting up events for their groups to go to if they wish and generally having a good time with one another. With fundraisers to help maintain trails and help with those costs, it's no doubt that Saint john trail running has things well in hand. • Just go outside - With Sarah Quintin #83
Our very special guest in today's episode is Sarah Quintin from Dieppe New Brunswick. Right away we find out that Sarah is very active and does many different activities to keep in shape and keep on moving. We talk about the balance of time and now Sarah is a new grandmother and how she keeps everything in check. This is a big issue for many of our guests on our podcast so it's always good to hear how they keep this balanced. Sarah tells us now she works at Mike's Bike Shop and how much she enjoys her time there. Sarah loves cycling and she uses that as a form of crosstraining, she explains what cyclocross is and why it's popular all over the province and the country. We talk a little bit about distracted drivers and how it was safer back in the day partly because there were fewer drivers on the road. Sarah has met so many passionate cyclists while working at Mike's that it really inspires her to keep on trucking. Triathlons are something Sarah loves and she plans on doing 3 of our local ones, always looking to improve on her times and see progress, fantastic. Sarah tells us a story about when she was 14 and went to a 1-week tennis camp. She realized that she needed to improve on her running to get better at most other sports. We talk about Sarah's cousin Neil and how much he influenced her. Neil was doing Triathlons and ironman's long before they became really popular. There is much more about Sarah in this episode so we hope everyone checks it out and enjoys our conversation with an extremely motivated and dedicated athlete.

  • Be an adult - With Michael Roy #82
We welcome back to our podcast a very popular guest, Michael Roy. In today's episode, we wanted to go more in-depth on the topic of bike safety, both from the cyclists and the individual driving a vehicle. If you want to know more about Michael Roy and his passion please go back to episode 50 parts A and B. Active transportation and stricter laws on distracted driving are what we really get into in this episode. So many people drive distracted in today's society it's insane and the fines for driving distracted are peanuts. Michael talks about the complacency we share out there and how it seems to be a driver's
world. Anytime we take our eyes off the road there is a danger of someone being hit and injured or even killed. Everyone associated with that person is affected and there is just no need for it. Michael has a fantastic list that cyclists can do to make their ride safer and we at Motivate to Move to believe Michael's list is spot on and should be shared with as many people as possible. Holding ourselves to account and helping each other is part of Michael's message, along with education on the subject of road and bike safety would go a long way to helping this issue. Michael talks to us about some things motorists can do to help make it safer for cyclists. These two lists are very enlightening and once again we hope this podcast is shared with as many people as possible, it could save someone's life.

Because we are talking bike safety and a very good friend of the podcast, Danny Jardine, just biked around All of PEI ( 4 days and 626 Km) for his charity, Alzheimer's awareness. We wanted to post the link here for his charity in hopes people will donate. Thank you.

  • Would you like to play a game - With Darren Duguay part2 #81b
Tonight we continue with our interview with Darren Duguay. Darren starts off by talking about things that affect athletes and their personal performance. Darren was personally struggling with addiction but he changed his focus to being busy and running away from his childhood and other things. Once Darren discovered Emotional Fitness® in 2012 it was the missing piece to his puzzle. Then I pose a hypothetical question to Darren and the answer may surprise you. Darren tells us it can come down to the pre-existing conditioning of the athletes from a team, simply fascinating. Darren talks to us about Holistic fitness and at least four components are involved, mental, physical, spiritual and emotional. We learn how important these components are and when one or more are missing how the chair can topple over. In a bit of a Twist, Darren asks Diane and I some questions, the tables have turned indeed. So we play a game and Darren asks the questions and we score ourselves. After the results, Darren tells us this is just a little taste of Emotional Fitness ® and these are a few of the tools used. This exercise was fascinating and below we linked a copy of the scale in case you at home would like to try this. More tools in one's toolkit can't hurt and hopefully, people out there find this helpful in some way.

Please check out our Facebook page and see our other guests

  • Best trade ever - With Darren Duguay part1 #81A
Tonight our very special guest is Darren Duguay, we met at the 8@8 on a Saturday morning at the YMCA in Moncton while running. We learn that Darren served in the military for 27 years and we want to thank Darren for all his service. We talk about Darren and his Boston Marathon runs and how a total team commitment got everyone through to the end. Then we get onto the 2013 Boston marathon when the bombs went off and how that affected Darren and the rest of the team. A moment in time a person would probably never forget. After leaving the Canadian Forces Darren went on a different path and he asks us
some questions, such as how would an injury affect an individual or athlete, very interesting. Darren tells us that he was running in Kabul Afghanistan and sometimes while there it would get up as high as nearly 50 degrees celsius, Wow! Darren tells us he started running in his childhood and in his little community Darren faced a lot of trauma. While still young he was told he needed an inhaler because of his asthma. After a short period of time, Darren traded his inhaler for a pair of sneakers and that's where it all started. After the age of 45, Darren learned he was running to run away from his problems instead of facing them. The story Darren tells us is very inspiring and we believe everyone should listen and hear how a person overcame all to get to where he is today. There is no stopping Darren. We also get into Holistic fitness and Emotional Fitness ® and Darren explains this so well. He goes in-depth and part two is even more in-depth. Darren's talk is excellent and we hope
you enjoy listening to this episode and part two as much as we did recording it.

  • Be brave enough to suck at something - With Melanie Wilson #80
Melanie Wilson is our very special guest tonight. Melanie likes to stay active and we love speaking with people like Melanie that are motivated to move. We learn that Melanie does a lot of fun things such as Zumba and ultimate frisbee, and triathlons, plus Melanie loves cycling. She started cycling with a group called Cycle chicks and was cycling all over and that's what really got Melanie going. When all the pieces of the puzzle came together Melanie planned to start triathlons in the Fall of 2016 but there was one problem, and that problem is she hates running. Even though running is not Melanie's cup of tea she did not let that stop her. She learned how to swim better and started training and built up her stamina to get ready. The Hampton Triathlon was going to be Melanie's
first but due to an unfortunate accident, she had to wait until 2018 and do the Aboiteau Triathlon. When Melanie crossed the finish line she felt amazing and now has completed 8 more Triathlons. On June 25th of this year, Melanie has plans to complete her very own half Ironman, 70.3 total miles, with her own course, very cool. If this goes well Melanie would like to do a 70.3 Half Ironman race so this is a stepping stone to future events. Then we bring up the boot camps that Melanie does at Peak Fitness in Dieppe. Melanie has done nearly 350 in total but has stopped them, for now, to train for her Half Ironman but we have no doubt that she will start up again once her training subsides. Lastly, we chat about loom knit and how much Melanie enjoys this hobby and I ask her how in the heck she has time for this. We see some of her work and it's amazing, picture below. Melanie is very motivated and we can't wait to see what she is going to try next.

  • No one left behind - With Katie Rogers #79
Tonight our special guest is Katie Rogers and we find out right away how Katie loves being involved in team sports and being part of a team. Katie wasn't really interested in working out alone so she did join a gym and enjoyed fitness classes. When Katie signed up for a boot camp that's when things started to get interesting. Her instructor suggested Katie try Triathlons and later she registered for the Hampton ladies Triathlon and started her journey of getting better at all the events. Katie loved it and was hooked, she loved the camaraderie and loved the support. The Mont Tremblant half Ironman was next on her list then the Chicago marathon and once Katie got going there was no stopping her. Katie talks about how she started swimming with proper technique and how she got started in the pool. We find out Katie started to cycle more and what led her to purchase her first road bike. Katie joined a cycling group and started riding casually and again things really took off from that point. Ridding for multiple days across the province and with a team name and a logo they were off. In the second year, they did a 9-day loop around N.B. just under 1000km and they were raising money for charity, amazing. Then we get into this year's tour titled "no one left behind". starting in Rothesay NB. and heading to Moncton, then to Charlottetown, Pictou, Sackville and back home. Covering all three Maritime provinces. This year's charities are Kids sport and Progress for mental health, wonderful charities and all of this is through the website Canada helps. There is lots more to this episode and we don't want to spoil it all here so go out for a walk, set up our podcast on your smartphone and listen to a very motivated Katie. Here are some awesome links from Katie and her team, check them out.

  • The tunnel of screams - With Alvin Richard part2 #78b
Diane starts part two of our episode with Alvin Richard by asking about his first time at the Boston Marathon, 19 years after he knew that he would run that marathon. Alvin tells us about some of his memories from that amazing first race. We talk about the emotions of those moments and the passion that Alvin has. We discuss how much of a tough time Alvin has when running in the heat and how that almost stopped Alvin from making the cut for Boston. There was no way Alvin would be stopped, he just went to another marathon the next week in order to qualify. Alvin was a two-time Olympic torch relay participant in Canada, we get the entire story of how Alvin was picked for this honour twice and how the entire event went down. Alvin has always kept a logbook to keep track of how many km he has run, all the way back to 1979. In 2002 Alvin had a herniated disk and had to cut back on running marathons but he also only had 10,465 km left to reach his goal of running around the equator 40,075 km. One of the craziest goals I have ever heard but certainly doable by Alvin now. Many injuries and setbacks later in 2019 Alvin had gone roughly 5500 km and still had 5300 left. That's when his resurgence happened and Alvin came roaring back. On Alvin's 60th birthday this past January, he finally realized his goal of running the equivalent of 40,075 total km, the same distance as running around the Earth's equator. Such staggering numbers I had to go back and listen to this most amazing story a third time. I believe Alvin could convince me that he can do anything he wanted. Congratulations Alvin, we are so glad to have interviewed you and one thing is for sure, you are motivated.

  • 1091 streets and counting - With Alvin Richard part1 #78A
Tonight's special guest is Alvin Richard and Alvin gets us started by talking about how he had a resurgence in running back in 2019. He ended up breaking 50 minutes for a 10km run, something he hadn't done in 10 years. Alvin tells about how he discovered someone that decided to run every street in Toronto as a pandemic project, all 10,000. Alvin starts planning on running all the streets in Moncton. The app that was being used was called City Strides and Alvin started using it. Now running all the streets in the city was manageable, way easier than printing out every street and colour codding them. After that, we get into Alvin's injuries and there is a great deal to talk about. It's amazing how Alvin never gave up and he kept ongoing. Yes, some years were lean on running but Alvin always came back somehow, simply amazing. We talk about how long Alvin has been running and what got him started down this path. At 15 years old Alvin knew someday he would run the Boston marathon, we talk about how Alvin came to this conclusion and the journey he took to get to his very first marathon. Alvin is such a wealth of knowledge and his stories are simply the best. This is just the first part of the interview so make sure you tune in next week for the second part of this episode.

  • Never sell yourself short - With Andrea Kelly #77
Tonight's special guest is Andrea Kelly, skip of Team New Brunswick and bronze medalist at this year's Scotties Tournament of Hearts that was held in Thunder Bay Ontario. Andrea gives us a quick description of how curling works and how many players are on a team. In 2005 Andrea and her junior team won the provincials and went on to the nationals that were held in Fredericton, the support Andrea and her team were getting was incredible. Her team played in the finals against team Alberta and with the help of a wonderful shot and some extra sweeping, they ended up pulling it out and winning the gold medal, amazing. They ended up representing Canada that year at the World Juniors in Pinerolo, Italy and ended up winning the bronze that year. We talk about how the team has changed over the years and how life sometimes just happens. Having good dynamics and really enjoying each other's company helps in having a good quality team and we chat about that. This year was Andrea's 10th time representing New Brunswick at the Scotties and next year is going to be her 11th and we have all the confidence in the world in Andrea. Andrea tells us about how she stays motivated and the amazing things that come out of being involved in curling, it is her zone. We can tell by chatting with Andrea just how driven and determined she really is. Loves being busy and always trying new things and for the last few years, she has taken up cycling. We talk about the results at the Scotties for team Andrea and we discuss how it all went down. Lots of wonderful stories from Andrea and it's so wonderful to talk with Andrea and see how much she loves Curling and her positivity to always get better.
