  • #113 – Lake Placid

It's night two of Movie-Ghoul-Round 2020 and we have modified our Netflix/Amazon Roulette randomizer a bit to include only horror movies. It sent us off to watch Lake Placid. Although more of a comedy with a scary premise, there's an argument to be made that the scriptwriting alone is horrifying enough to qualify it for the genre. Are there enjoyable elements here? Does the croc look good? Can Oliver Platt and Brendan Gleeson save the day? And how big was the paycheck to get Betty White to swear so much?

  • #112 – Pumpkinhead

It's time for the annual Movie-Ghoul-Round! For our third go-around of this tradition, we'll be hosting a 5-night marathon of episodes leading up to Halloween night. To kick it off, David brought 1988's Pumpkinhead as his pick for New to Two. While it's not one of the "big" horror movies of the '80s, it's become more respected over time; we dig into why with the gusto of an angry man digging up a demon. Is it Lance Henriksen's performance? The practical monster effects? All the "teenagers" getting picked up by the head? Have a listen and let us know!

  • #111 – Toy Story 4

In this New to Two, chosen by David, we watched our most recent movie to date: Toy Story 4. Brett hadn't been able to fit it in his schedule, and Nicole thought it would be impossible to add on to the neat bow of Toy Story 3. We asked ourselves: What themes do you explore after you've tackled death? Does it matter what the story is when the animation is this stunning? Who was the genius who did the casting? And most important, why is Andy's RC racecar sentient, when Bo Peep's RC skunk is not?

  • #110 – The Hobbit (1977)

In this You Did This to Us,  you chose The Hobbit for us to watch. But no one specified the Peter Jackson movie, so we thought we'd pull a fast one and watch this animated film from 1977! ...It was not a fast one. It was a very, very slow one. Although Nicole, Brett, and David enjoyed a few things, like a compelling riddle game with Gollum, and found some other things to talk about, we pretty much did this one to ourselves.

  • Movie-Go-Round Marathon Update

Today, we wanted to drop an update in the feed as to where the show has been and what you can expect from it in the future and over the next month. (Spoiler: Movie-Ghoul-Round will be back!) Here's a transcription of the update:

"Hello, everyone – Brett Stewart here. I wanted to drop an announcement in the feed to give everyone an update on what to expect over the next month from Movie-Go-Round.

Firstly: It’s been a tough year! The pandemic, stay-at-home orders, devastating wildfires, massive protests – riots – 2020’s been a real peach. For me, the pandemic hit like a ton of bricks and I had more work than ever before. That’s why I took a break from producing Movie-Go-Round to step back and regroup.

I’m really excited to let you all know that we’re now back and, at least I think, better than ever! Starting later today, you’ll be getting a huge influx of episodes in your feed. Think of it as a, “End of Summer, Beginning of Fall, Movie-Go-Round Marathon Special That Also Not-So-Secretly Doubles as a Way for Us to Release our Lengthy Backlog in Time for Movie-Ghoul-Round in the Final Weeks of October.” Very catchy.

You’ll notice some significant differences this time around. The editing style on the episodes is very different and leans more into the production end of things. I think folks will really enjoy that. On October 1, we’ll be wrapping all the episodes into the launch of a brand-new website that includes loads of new content, particularly video and live streaming. It’s a really pretty site, better than ever before, and well-worthy of a distinguished spot amongst your bookmarks.

Lastly, I do also want to apologize: This year got so hectic that as the producer, I dropped the ball on keeping the audience abreast of why we were MIA. Stepping back was a healthy change for the show: the new editing style is terrific and we were over-burdened by a hefty backlog. It’s my goal as a producer to avoid developing such a backlog again. Because, bear in mind, we want to be current come the third annual Movie-Ghoul-Round later next month!

Your patience during this time has been so appreciated. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy, and we look forward to having you torture us for many more You Did This to Us movies. Be on the lookout for the first episode of the revamped Movie-Go-Round in your feed later today."

  • #109 – The Raid 2: Berendal

In this Around the World, David followed up his earlier Around the World pick of The Raid with its sequel, The Raid 2: Berendal. Bigger in scope, geography, set pieces, and inventive fighting styles than the first film, does The Raid 2 go overboard? How many boss battles can be wedged into one movie? Is it possible to pass out from forgetting to breathe while watching the car chase? Is there any possible drinking game you can play with this movie that won't kill you? What were Brett and Nicole's favorite fights? Tune in to find out!

  • #108 – Inside Llewyn Davis

In this Future Classics, Brett brought Inside Llewyn Davis to the panel as his pick. This looping odyssey traces one talented singer's travels in search of a big break in the folk music scene of 1961. Brett loves folk music, but what else did he love about the movie? David loves the Coen brothers, but did he love this sample of their work? And Nicole hated the main character, but appreciated the filmmaking. What was the final verdict?

  • #107 – Equilibrium

In this Netflix Roulette, the wheel spit out a cult...well, not classic...but entertaining hybrid/knockoff of Fahrenheit 451 and the Matrix - Equilibrium. We had fun talking about this stew of melee gunfighting and antifascist diatribe, asking questions like How many dystopian novels can one movie rip off? Is Christian Bale being used to his full potential? What are the drugs supposed to do and why don't they seem to be working for Taye Diggs? Are they seriously going to shoot that puppy? Those a**holes!

  • #106 – Captive State

New to Two, and possibly all of our listeners, was 2019's Captive State. A mid-budget sci-fi movie set ten years after a successful alien invasion, this story of resistance that includes two Black brothers trying to free the city of Chicago from an oppressive rule was one that may have deserved a wider audience. It's pretty messy in the edit, with some underdeveloped characters and not enough budget for its ambition, but Nicole thought it had saving graces. How did co-hosts David and Brett feel about it? How will you?

  • #105 – The Happening

You did this to us... again. We had to watch a film that nearly topples over from the weight of its own bad science, The Happening! Listen as Brett, David, and Nicole tear their hair out over the impossible-to-swallow premise, illogical behavior of the characters, horrible dialogue, and waste of an "R" rating. Join us for one of our most spirited episodes! (It's better than watching The Happening...)
