Ok, now that awards season is over, we can finally have a little fun. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Oscars and all that, but sometimes it can get a little too serious. And what better way to let loose than with a little… pro wrestling?

It’s hard to imagine you’re going to understand much of M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass without first having seen Unbreakable , made back in the year 2000, and Split , from 2016. But, then, you should probably just watch both of those anyway— Unbreakable is Shyamalan at his filmmaking height, a look at what it would be like for a super hero to exist in the real world; and Split is a dandy thriller. If Beale Street Could Talk is only director Barry Jenkins’ third feature, but it’s already his second true masterpiece, after the astounding 2016 film Moonlight . This movie’s based on the 1974 novel by James Baldwin, and tells the story of Tish, a 19-year-old pregnant woman in Harlem, and Fonny, her boyfriend who’s been jailed for a sexual assault he clearly didn’t commit.

One of the genuinely valuable things a movie can do is to really, truly take us somewhere: whether that’s a galaxy far, far away, or, in the case of Roma , Mexico City in 1971.

OK, just a warning: I’m about to talk about superheroes. I don’t mean this disparagingly — I’ve certainly enjoyed more than a couple superhero movies and still think Black Panther was one of the best movies of 2018.
