  • One Sandwich to Rule Them All - Insanity Check #643
    Kriss is back with another episode of the Insanity Check to cover this week's dose of insanity in the world. This week he's joined by someone who is no stranger to the show (and also the harbinger of the end of the world), Dpalm. We got a lot to cover, from Disney & Sony having a divorce (at the expense of Peter Parker) to the Amazon burning. Everything is terrible. Except the Popeyes chicken sandwich. That's great. Allegedly.
    Topics:

    * The Disney-Sony Breakup - Folks do realize they're both multi-billionaire companies right?
    * The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich is making everyone lose their mind
    * Popeyes' chicken sandwich isn't why your friends and family don't support your "work"
    * The Amazon is burning...everything is fine
    * Justice Department "mistakenly" sends out email with link to white supremacist site. "Accidentally"
    * AG Bar thinks the police shouldn't be questioned or protested.
    * Police officer makes up sniper attack
    * Make Marysville White Again
    * Apparently people don't talk before they get married
    * Great Moments in White Privilege

    * Sean Spicer Gets to be on Dancing With the Stars because...white

  • Ready or Not - Movie Review
    Ready or Not channels the vibe of 'Clue' more than 'You're Next'. The posters and TV spots for this film may lead you down the path of thinking Samara Weaving's character is go full survivalist badass on her new murderous in-laws but that's just not the case. Ready or Not leans heavily into the ridiculousness of the plot and characters. Nickey Guadagni's Aunt Helene and Henry Czerny's Tony Le Domas are both hilariously absurd. Brian Tyler's score is equally absurd. The score will signal a supremely epic moment while the scene itself is extremely mundane. It's something that if you get the joke, you'll enjoy but if you're expecting something more serious, it will drive you crazy.

    Ro and Kriss really enjoyed this film. Brandon...not so much. But everyone makes valid points and it really comes down to what kind of film you were expecting. Listen as both sides give their views and decide if Ready or Not is the type of film you want to check out.

  • New Mutants Part 1- Character Corner #77
    We're officially back with a new Character Corner episode. First off, we want to thank all the fans who nominated us for the Podcast Awards. We've made the final slate of 10 in the Entertainment category and that means a lot to us. So thank you to everyone who voted. And if you're a new listener who has found us because of the podcast awards, welcome and we hope you enjoy.
    Now...as for this episode. So we started off with going through the Claremont X-Men run (Part 1 and Part 2 are here) and realized that we can't really cover Claremont's run properly without covering the New Mutants. When you really look at it, the New Mutants were Claremont's way of retelling the origin of the X-Men with a new and diverse team. There were 5 diverse students that all had powers they needed to learn to control as well as their own personal issues. And because Claremont was writing both this series and Uncanny X-Men, he basically gets two series to tell one big story. We get more about why Kitty hates Emma (Emma is really really evil), Magneto and Lee Forrester and what happened when the X-Men were always off earth (Like during the Brood Wars). For this first part, we cover up to the Trial of Magneto (where we stopped in the X-Men series).
    Issues:

    * Uncanny X-Men #160 - X-Men rescue Illyana from the demon Belasco
    * Magik (Storm & Illyana) Mini-Series

    * Miniseries covers the 7 seconds/7 years Illyana spent in limbo

    * Marvel Team-Up #100 - First Appearance of Karma/Xi'an Coy Manh
    * Marvel Graphic Novel #4: The New Mutants - First appearance of the team "The New Mutants"

    * First appearance of Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane)
    * First appearance of Sam Guthrie (Cannonball)
    * First appearance of Roberto da Costa (Sunspot)
    * First appearance of Danielle Moonstar  (Psyche/Mirage)

    * New Mutants #6 - 7 - Apparent death of Xi-an
    * New Mutants #8 - First appearance of Amara Aquilla (Magma)
    * New Mutant #13 - First appearance of Doug Ramsey (Cypher)
    * New Mutants #16 - First appearance of The Hellions
    * New Mutants #18 - 20 - The Demon Bear Saga

    * Issue #18 First appearance of Warlock

    * New Mutants #25 - First appearance of David Haller (Legion)
    * New Mutants #28 - 33
    * New Mutants Epic Collection

  • Luce - Movie Trailer Review
    Brandon, Kriss, and Ro got together to discuss new release Luce and all agree this is one film that'll definitely get you talking. Because even after discussing it, no one is exactly sure who was running game on whom.
    Luce follows champion debater and star athlete Luce (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) as he navigates high school under a spotlight. Luce is every adult's dream student and child. He's smart, savvy, motivated and well-liked by his peers.
    Taken in by white parents (Naomi Watts and Time Roth), after a childhood in a war-ravaged country, Luce is a young man on the rise. Until a teacher (Octavia Spencer) begins to make accusations and threaten his relationship with his family and friends. Veil threats, miscommunication, and outright stupidity set in motion a series of interactions that culminate in unexpected ways. It's contemporary look and pacing make it not only engaging but feel extremely relevant on many levels.
    This is one that will leave you unsettled even as you become ever convinced it's saying something important.

    Luce Gives Stereotyping A whole New Perspective
    Based on a stage play of the same name, Luce builds its story around black identity, blackness and the expectations and limitations placed on Black people - both native-born and immigrants - in society, between Black people and based on circumstance and situation. The entire crew agrees this is one psychological ride worth watching because Luce, is a special kind of messed up.
    With a stellar performance after performance, the crew agrees Luce hardly misses a beat even when the notes don't ring true (B found more than a few situations beyond belief but that's because he's just extra sneaky) and make the entire viewing experience memorable.
    This film is, once again, an example of how limited releases short change audiences. Luce opened in several major markets starting August 2, 2019. It should definitely be on your watch list and we strongly suggest you hunt down a theater to see it post-haste.

  • Good Boys - Movie Trailer Reviews
    Kriss and Brandon (with Ro muted on the line) discuss Good Boys. This film will get a lot of comparisons between Superbad, Booksmart and other films like it before. It doesn't break new ground but it does offer the same type of tale but from the point of view of some younger kids. And it's pretty accurate in terms of what they do and don't know. So while it's not ground breaking, it's still hilarious and worth checking out.

  • Blinded By The Light - Movie Trailer Reviews
    Some of the MTR crew used SDCC as an excuse to get together for a few press screenings. Now that the dust's settled Brandon and Ro sat down to talk about Blinded By the Light.
    This coming of age story, about a Pakistani youth finding his way, uses select songs from Bruce Springsteen and is set in 1987 England. Javed (Viveik Kalra)is a British teen of Pakistani descent. He's struggling with living in an unwelcoming small town outside London, trying to honor his family and culture, and find his place in the world. Javed's family works hard to stay together and keep their traditions whole amidst the racial and economic turmoil of the changing times. Javed is a writer and uses poetry to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the strict rules of his traditional father. But after a classmate introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteen, Javed sees parallels to his working-class life Springteen's lyrics. This connection gives Javed the courage to begin expressing himself and making decisions that change his life.

    Blinded by the Light unabashedly celebrates the music of Springsteen
    Large parts of its story highlighted by songs meant to establish a connection between Javed's state of mind and what's going on in his life but it's more than just an interesting use of an artist's music catalog. Brandon felt the relationship between father and son didn't progress enough to warrant the pay-off at the end. Ro found the insertion of music at certain points in the story intrusive rather than enlightening.
    Both agree that this adaptation of Sarfraz Manzoor’s acclaimed memoir Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll, “Blinded by the Light” as directed by Gurinder Chadha digs into tradition, culture, family in ways that aren't often tackled. There's plenty of this story not showcased because it focuses strictly on Javed and his journey and Brandon found it more than a bit off-putting, while Ro found it an apt demonstration of the hypocrisy inherent in family dynamics.
    It's worth seeing, but be prepared to be in your feelings and ready to talk about the vagaries of pride. No two people will walk away connecting to the same parts of this story.
    Blinded by the Light stars Viveik Kalra, Kulvinder Ghir, Meera Ganatra, Nell Williams, Aaron Phagura, Hayley Atwell and Dean-Charles Chapman.
    This film opens wide, August 16, 2019.

  • Doomsday Clock, House of X & Powers of X - The Pull List

    So small announcement. Normally we discuss our comic pull lists at the end of each Mailbag on the Super Tuesday Recap podcast. But we've decided to do some reorganization and make the Pull List a special recurring episode on the Character Corner. It just makes more sense to discuss the comics we're reading on our comic book podcast. So...welcome to the August Pull List on the Character Corner. Every few months we'll discuss what we've been reading the last few months and have some discussions on that. Below is a taste of what we discuss this episode:

    * Power Rangers
    * Dpalm is not a fan of the new IDW Transformers books
    * Doomsday Clock is finally living up to the hype
    * Heroes in Crisis and can Wally finally get a break
    * Tom King is putting Batman through the ringer
    * It's official: Jason Aaron has the greatest Thor run
    * Ta-Nehisi Coates is scary good on Captain America
    * Hickman is about to blow our minds with House of X and Powers of X

    That's just a taste of what we discuss (We talk for 90 minutes and didn't even get to everything). Hope you enjoy and we'll be back with a new Pull List in October. Don't worry, our New Mutants Part 1 Character Corner will be out in a week or so.

  • Star Trek Universe @ SDCC 2019 - Super Tuesday Recap
    Apologies as this was supposed to come out weeks ago. Originally I was just going to do a write-up of the Star Trek Universe panel at SDCC and include pictures from Brandon but then my cohosts from the Star Trek Discovery reviews really wanted to discuss the panel so we decided to just turn it into a podcast episode. We talk about all the big news out of SDCC for Star Trek. Who would have thought that the CBS All Access app that launched with a rocky star and a buggy app would become the place for all the best Star Trek content...but here we are.

    We talk about:

    Short Treks are BACK!!! With more Pike, Spock & Number One
    Discovery is 1000 years in the future and everything changes
    Picard brings back Seven of Nine, Data, Riker & More.
    Can Picard redeem Seven of Nine and give the character more depth and purpose beyond being a sex symbol
    Lower Decks and animated Star Trek
    and more!

  • The Mighty Mouse - Insanity Check #642
    Kriss is back with another episode of the Insanity Check to cover this week's dose of insanity in the world. This week he's joined by Tim (@Peoplescrtic). With all the terrible in the world we start off with some lighter stuff: The Mouse Takes Over the World. Disney has a steal of a Disney+ bundle and is killing it at the box-office this year. So much for the idea that people don't want to see sequels, remakes and reboots. On the more serious side, Jeffrey Epstein is dead and its all very suspicious and Trump lacks the basics of human compassion and emotion.
    Topics:

    * Disney+ coming for our pockets
    * Mighty Mouse: Disney ruling the 2019 box-office
    * Battle of the streaming services
    * The Purge franchise is so good and relevant
    * Pedophile Jeffrey Epstein commits suicide...that's not suspicious
    * R Kelly in jail on federal charges
    * R Kelly's "crisis manager" quits after saying he wouldn't let his daughter be around R Kelly
    * Trump uses El Paso victims as a photoshoot
    * Ivanka and Melania are co-conspirators
    * Great Moments in White Privilege

    * DOJ blocked report on White Supremacists being responsible for all racial based domestic terrorist attacks in 2018
    * Team Mitch white bigoted dudebros and their disgusting AOC cutout
