MTR Network Main Feed

We're finally back. Between San Diego Comic-Con and other things we had to delay our review of episode 10 and decided to just review 10 & 11 together. We find out more about Izel and Sarge, how the monoliths and fear dimension play a part and get the set up for whats going to be an epic 2 hour finale. We also talk about the news out of San Diego Comic-Con that season 7 will be the agents' last.

Also, we need everyone to go to PodcastAwards.com and signup to nominate the Character Corner in the Entertainment and People's Choice categories. It only takes 5 minutes and we'd really appreciate it. Nominations run through July 31st so head over and get those votes in.

This week Dpalm is out in Denver but still calls in for this week's review of Agents of SHIELD, Collision Course Part 2. No, despite the slander, Kriss did NOT force him to work on his vacation. This week's episode feels like it could give you a false sense of hope that everything worked out. The team saves the day, Izel is apparently blown up and Fitz & Simmons make it back home. Everything is good right? Right??? Of course not. Izel clearly had a plan. Davis is messed up (and maybe not even really himself). The mystery of who Sarge really is continues to grow. And well...the episode ends with May putting a few bullets into Sarge. Yeah...this isn't the end by a long shot.

Still, we love everything we've seen so far. Daisy has come so far with her powers and just continues to be a bad ass. Mack & YoYo might be back together (Agent Red Shirt who?). Fitz learns he not only has a grandson from the future but....that grandson is rich. And we get more clues as to who (or what) Sarge is and why he looks like Coulson. Of course those clues just lead to more questions. The last few episodes are gonna put us through a ride.

Next week's review will be out a little later than normal. Kriss is going to be at San Diego Comic-Con so we will record the review of episode 10 on the 24th. But we'll also include any news about Agents of SHIELD from the SDCC panels and press rooms so stay turned.

Also, we need everyone to go to PodcastAwards.com and signup to nominate the Character Corner in the Entertainment and People's Choice categories. It only takes 5 minutes and we'd really appreciate it. Nominations run through July 31st so head over and get those votes in.

All I wanted to do was to go on vacation, but the NBA doesn't sleep does it? The good news is Chris Paul is a member of the Thunder (for now), and Russy in Houston means I get to talk USWNT, the Home Run Derby, Wimbeldon, and flying knees to the face.

Kriss, Ro and Brandon review Disney's The Lion King. There seems to be a bit of a disconnect between what this film is and the actual overall reviews. Maybe there is a bit of nostalgia rose colored glasses happening for some for the original but for us, this film matches up pretty well and does what it has to. The cast is great, the music is memorable and the film looks gorgeous. There are some slight pacing issues in the 3rd act but overall, this is a good film. Especially when compared to Aladdin, Dumbo and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.  And for all the issues with the CG animals looking "too real", these same complaints didn't come for The Jungle Book. We have some thoughts on why.

And last but not least, Kriss clears his name with a rant about Wild Rose that is just *chef kiss* perfect.

Discussing The Last Black Man in San Francisco

Brandon finally gave into Joi and Ro's badgering to hunt down a theater and watch the The Last Black Man in San Francisco before it left theaters (at the time of recording, Kriss still hadn't accepted that Ro is always right in these matters possibly because The LBMiSF's primary marketing drive made it look at least tangentially like a "Black film") and the trio gathered to talk about the film's themes and different viewing experience.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco, directed by Joe Talbot, is the story of Jimmie Fails's obsession with an old Victorian home his family used to live in located in the heart of San Francisco. Jimmie's lived his whole life fixated on the home he's quick to tell people his grandfather built.

Accompanied in all things by his best friend Mongomery Allen aka Mont (portrayed by Jonathan Majors with best-be-nominated-for-best-supporting-actor-level-talent) Jimmie comes up with a scheme gain ownership of his childhood home again. Mont and his unique approach to processing the world around him is both the voice of reason and unfailingly supportive friend. The LBMiSF is a journey of self-discovery that touches on grief, trauma, family (blood and found), love, masculinity, and truth.

There's no way to walk away from The LBMiSF without a wholly new perspective on homelessness, addiction recovery, ownership, and the duty each person owes to the city they call home.

Targeting The Black Male Gaze in The Last Black Men In San Francisco

Although The LBMiSF builds its narrative around the real-life experiences of Jimmie Fails, and his love affair with his former family home on Fillmore, it's messaging is both overt and nuanced with a deliberate focus on the connections and relationships between Black Men overlayed on an evocative backdrop chronicling the gentrification of San Francisco.

For Ro and Joi, this film struck a chord on several levels but didn't feel "aimed" at them. For Brandon, it was a moving narrative that made him feel uniquely seen. All three agree, that 1) it makes no sense this film didn't have a larger marketing push and 2) though mileage may vary when it comes to what people think this film's about The Last Black Man in San Francisco's a must watch.

Collision Course is the perfect name for this episode because everything is coming to an explosive collision. This episode is a bit of an info dump but only in the way that Agents of SHIELD can do meaning we of course have more questions. Of course Izel is the "big bad" that Sarge is after and of course Sarge has his own set of secrets. Izel might be the big bad but Sarge isn't all that good himself. Kriss and Dpalm have some ideas of why Sarge looks like Coulson thanks to some more clues brought up this episode. Oh and Kriss is to blame for the black agent dying (just had to gloat last episode). There's a lot to discuss so give it a listen.
