Since it is Pride month we're taking a break from our Claremont X-Men series (I know I know, we just started it) to talk about LGBTQ characters and representation in comics. Instead of focusing on just a handful of characters we focus more in general on some of the bigger, milestone moments (both good and bad) in comics. We start with the big two (DC and Marvel) and we fully acknowledge that while there have been some great improvements, there's still a long way to go. But in order for there to be improvement, we need to know what came before. So we acknowledge milestone moments while also pointing out when if they're just hollow attempts at representation because nothing was done with those storylines.

We also admit that we're just two cis-het men and so we're in no means experts on the true impact these characters and moments have (both good and bad) on the LGBTQ community. But we do our best to at least provide a starting point for listeners. Definitely go out and listen to some voices in the LGBTQ community for more in-depth and knowledgeable discussions on these characters and moments.

The NBA Finals are over and can't interfere with Agents of SHIELD anymore so we're back. And of course the show decides to hit us right in the gut. Showing us Coulson's final days with May was just unfair. And then we finally get Fitz and Simmons reunited, in a way. So how will Fitz and Simmons' story end? Horribly or will they finally give us some peace? Who knows.

And we finally get some more answers on what Sarge and his team are up to. The question is, how far does this go?

The Sun is Also A Star Adaptation Is Missing It's Center On Screen

Shortly after The Sun is Also A Star hit theaters, Ro sits down with critic Joi Childs to talk about the film's adaptation and on why the story context should've mattered more in this charming day-in-the-life love story, and how it feels like the screenwriters (and possibly the actors) fell short of the mark when deciding on what angle to take. Joi and Ro both wonder if the uneven ability in the lead actors weighed in on the seeming decision to not spend much time on showing substantive backstory for an entire family or if perhaps Yara's skillset wasn't up to carrying the weight this story needed to be more than a superficial one-and-done romance story. Ro and Joy wonder does how much the seeming maturity of the actor matter should be taken into consideration.

The discussion contains a few excerpts from the book which may feel spoiler to some. So, Ro delayed sharing this chat to give folks time to see the film (or read the book) themselves. Both Ro and Joi enjoyed The Sun is Also A Star (beautiful people are never a bad thing) but each wishes that it hadn't fallen so far short of what it could've been with just a bit more care.

We talk likes, dislikes. Joi ponders accurate portrayals of chemistry between strangers and teenagers and confirms that Charles Melton is absolutely old enough for us to drool over for years to come.

Kriss, Ro & Brandon review The Dead Don't Die. This film is an absolute mess. It's like one of those films you find while scrolling Netflix late at night that you notice has all these big names in the cast but you've never heard of the film. So you start watching it only to quickly realize why you've never heard of it before. Director and writer Jim Jarmusch was clearly going for "something" here but the film isn't as clever or as intriguing as it attempts to be. It has no third act, is lazy with characters and doesn't earn any of the introspective commentary it tries to make. It should have never hit theaters.

Joi & Ro review Shaft as Brandon and Kriss listen in cause they're ain't shit and didn't go to the movie. Kriss is also a bit incredulous that Tim Story is still getting calls after not one bad Fantastic Four movie but two. Clearly Tim Story knows where the bodies and tapes in Hollywood are buried.

Kriss, Ro, Brandon and Joi review Men In Black: International. This film continues a sad trend we've seen the last few weeks of taking a talented cast and wasting them with a poorly thought out script. Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth are good together but it's not enough. This film had opportunities to be more than what it is but it just doesn't try. Which begs the question: Why test the waters to see if the Men In Black series can continue and do such a terrible job? Also why spoil your own movie in the beginning and be so predictable?

Ro & Brandon review The Secret Life of Pets 2. This sequel is fun and works  better as three little shorts until the ending tries to force everyone together. Still, it's fun, enjoyable and has something for adults and children.

Kriss & Ro review Late Night starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling. This is a movie that is not only going to have some white men feeling "triggered" but also some white women. Emma Thompson is great and this is probably Mindy Kaling's best screenplay. And Nisha Ganatra should definitely get credit for pulling all the pieces together as a director.

This film is well worth checking out.
