Mythic Mind

Are video games only a waste of time, or can they share in what Tolkien called sub-creation? Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) reads his essay "Video Games as Sub-Creation" and rethinks an old prejudice through On Fairy-Stories.

This Mythic Mind episode asks what happens when play builds secondary worlds with the materials of the primary one: enchantment, truth in fiction, and why "made up" is a poor synonym for false. Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) show up as a lived example of open-world mythmaking.

Topics include Tolkien's sub-creation, games as more than diversion, and the line between idle escape and formative enchantment.

Video games as a medium: enchantment, craft, story, and whether play can expand the imagination the way literature does. Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) sits down with Master Samwise and Josh Traylor to weigh the art of games without nostalgia or dismissal.

In this Mythic Mind conversation, they talk favorite titles, subcreation on the screen, beauty and aesthetics in worlds like Dark Souls, and how games might fit beside books as a serious avenue of creative attention.

Topics include games as art form, craft worth taking seriously, and the difference between wasted time and formative play.

Where Mythic Mind has been, and where it could go if the fellowship were fully funded: podcasts, Discord, independent courses outside institutional tuition traps, and a long dream of shared study in Lewis, Tolkien, myth, and philosophy.

In this short Mythic Mind episode, Dr. Andrew Snyder (professor of philosophy and theology) sketches the project's arc from early Kierkegaard dissertation episodes through Beowulf, the Poetic Edda, and Tolkien courses, then names the invitation to creators and members who want high-quality humanities without the usual academic baggage.

Topics include cross-posting to YouTube, course life (Brief History of Ideas and more), and what a funded Mythic Mind Fellowship might sustain.

Tolkien did not expect history to be anything but a long defeat, though it may contain glimpses of final Victory.

Drawing from his letters, The Lord of the Rings, "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics," and "On Fairy-Stories," this episode traces how northern courage (fight for the good of the day without counting on ultimate triumph) meets Christian eucatastrophe: the sudden joyous turn that does not deny sorrow, but denies that defeat is the last word. Along the way: Beowulf's circle of light, Galadriel's "long defeat," Helm's Deep at dawn, and Gandalf on despair versus doomed resistance.
