  • US jittters, Europe soft, Canada & Sweden hawkish
    Thursday 25th October 2018
The US stock market took another hammering overnight, with a move to safe-haven treasuries. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Rodrigo Catril how far this has to go, given the supposed strength of the US economy. There was more confidence north of the border, as the Bank of Canada lifted rates. But what will the ECB say today, meeting after weaker than expected PMI figures. They also look ahead to today’s trade figures for New Zealand.

  • Giving up on a good year?
    Wednesday 24th October 2018
US stocks tumbled overnight, with small cap stocks back where they started the year. In Europe the situation is worse still. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Tapas Strickland what’s driving the correction. They also discuss continued uncertainty over Italy and Brexit, and whether the Kashoggi killing has already blown over? They also look ahead to the Bank of Canada rate decision tonight, and why the Riksbank is worth watching.

  • China boosts business. May’s last stand?
    Tuesday 23rd October 2018
The Chinese stock market performed well on the back of yesterday’s proposals from the government and the PBoC. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Ray Attrill whether this is a further sign that China is isolating itself from the US? Europe and the UK are jittery today, as the Italian budget stand-off continues and there’s increasing questions over whether the UK PM should stand-down. Plus, why are oil prices holding down despite uncertainty over Saudi Arabia (and elsewhere)?

  • Wentworth Falls, Italy Stands Firm, Saudis Confess, Trump cuts Loose
    Monday 22nd October 2018
It’s been a busy weekend for news. Phil Dobbie talks to NAB’s Ray Attrill about what will impact the markets at the start of this week, including the surprise result at the Wentworth bi-election, the US pulling out of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty, the Saudis implicated in the Kashoggi murder, the Italians digging their heals in on their budget plans and the looming cliff edge for Brexit.

  • A risk-off mood, just for today?
    Friday 19th October 2018
There’s caution in the air, but could it just be for a day? With all the volatility around, Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Gavin Friend whether there’s a danger in assuming what we’ve seen overnight is the start of something bigger. And are the real risks in China, which wasn’t called a currency manipulator in the Treasury’s currency report, but its clear President Trump is not going to back away from trade restrictions with them? Plus the latest on Italy, Saudi Arabia and Brexit, and data to look out for today.

  • US dollar gains, oil falls, EU wants answers
    Thursday 18th October 2018
The FOMC minutes this morning provided little in the way of surprises. But the Fed has been facing criticism from the US President. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s David de Garis whether that could influence their seemingly independent policy plans. Meanwhile, Theresa May is standing in front of her peers in Europe with little more to say on Brexit, but it was the UK’s CPI numbers that hit the pound overnight. And, despite increasing tensions over the missing Saudi journalist, oil fell sharply today – there are more than enough supplies for now.
