Bobby Benson is regarded as the first Nigerian musician to release a High-Life tune. The talented musician was born Bernard Olabinjo Benson on April 11, 1922 and passed on May 14, 1983.

He was born in Ikorodu, Lagos State, into an aristocratic family. His older brother T. O. S. Benson (1917–2008) would become a successful politician.  

Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek was one of the biggest music stars to come out of Africa. His debut album, Prisoner of Conscience, (1988) immediately catapulted him to super star status with the hit single “Send Down the Rain”.  

Born to an Ijesha father and a Benin woman in 1963, Majek predominantly grew up with his mother in Benin City. After a brief stint with the Ja*Stix Band, Majek went solo in 1988. His other albums include, I&I Experince, Spirit of Love, etc.

Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti also known as “Abami Eda” was a Nigerian musician, multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer and political activist. Raised by two disciplinarians; Reverend Israel Oludotun and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Fela was born on October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta Ogun state.

He is regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, an African music genre that combines traditional Yoruba and highlife music with American funk and jazz.

Fela shot to stardom in Nigeria during the 1970s, during which he was an outspoken critic and target of Nigeria's military juntas.

Archbishop Benson Andrew Idahosa  (September 11, 1938 – March 12, 1998), was renowned African Preacher and widely travelled Evangelist.

He is the founder of Church of God Mission International as well as Benson Idahosa University (BIU) in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.

He was commissioned into ministry in 1971 by Pa Elton and Gordon Lindsey and was ordained a Bishop in 1981.

Idahosa died on the 12th of March 1998 at the age of 59. He was survived by his wife, Margaret Idahosa and four children (FEB, Ruth, Daisy and Freda).

Sonny Okosun was born on New Year’s day of 1947. Until his death on May 24, 2008, Okosun was a respected Nigerian musician and social crusader. He was  the leader of the Ozzidi band.

Okosun was one of the leading Nigerian musicians from the late 1970s through the mid-90s.

He grew up with his grandmother at Ibore, near Irrua in Edo State, Nigeria before moving to Enugu to live with his parents.

Okosun's brand of African pop music, Ozzidi, is a synthesis of Afro-beat, reggae and funk music.

From 1977, he became known for protest songs about Pan-Africanism, freedom and a few other social and political issues affecting Africans.

Maxwell Udoh was one of Reggae music pioneers in Nigeria. In his life time before passing on Thursday, December 18, 2014, Udoh released a total of nine albums.

Born on August 29, 1959 in Ibiono Ibom LGA of Akwa Ibom State, the artiste whose real name is Ignatius Maurice Udoh died at the age of 55 after a protracted illness.  Rasman started his musical journey at a young age training under the tutelage of his uncle, Patrick Udoh of The Doves Rock Band, Umuahia, Abia State. He then went solo with the breakup of The Doves and found instant success, with Rasman Maxwell Udoh and Masses Militia Band churning out hits upon hits from their Umuahia base.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a five-time Grammy Award-winning South African male choral group formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, They became known internationally after singing with Paul Simon on his 1986 album Graceland.

Tera Kota is the first solo Nigerian to release a reggae album back in 1984. Though his first album was released in 1982, he broke even with Lamentation of Sodom in 1984.

His real name is Gboyega Femi. And he pioneered reggae music way before the likes of Majek Fashek, Orits Wiliki, Evi Edna Ogholi and Ras Kimono.
