On this episode of Nailing The Apex, Tim Hauraney is joined from FanGraphs Michael Baumann to set up the Japanese Grand Prix, the technical directive that was introduced at the Singapore Grand Prix, could that hold Red Bull Racing Back (6:20). George Russell questioned Max Verstappen not getting a grid penalty for impeding Yuki Tsunoda during qualifying for the SingaporeGP, and is there an argument to be made that the FIA should have the same race stewards at ever grand prix weekend (10:20). Could Russell’s SingaporeGP crash do one of two things to him, make him next level race car diver, or sap his confidence for the rest of the season (19:57). Max Verstappen had said on Thursday that Lando Norris could be the favourite for this weekend’s race in Japan, and McLaren lock Oscar Piastri up till 2026. Lando Norris believes that McLaren’s driver lineup is the strongest on the grid (33:40). Zak Brown is all in on an 11th team to hit the F1 grid, and does not see it as diluting, but additive to the grid (42:51). Rumours swirling that AlphTauri’s driver lineup will be Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo for 2024, what does that mean for Liam Lawson, and does he take Logan Sergeants seat at Williams Racing (52:47).

The Singapore Grand Prix was the best race of the season and Tim Hauraney and Jesse Blake break it all down in this episode of Nailing The Apex.

Carlos Sainz put on a masterclass in race strategy to capture his second win for Ferrari and snaps Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing’s winning streak (00:00). McLaren brought a big upgrade to Lando’s car for this weekends race, and the British driver delivered as the team begins to claw it’s way up the constructors standings, could they catch Aston Martin for fourth in the standings? (22:30) It was a weekend to forget for Aston Martin, as their driver Lance Stroll is required to sit out the Singapore Grand Prix due to injury (29:00). Mercedes was the fastest team on track at the end of the race, but you have to take your hat off for their desire to just go for a win instead of settling for a podium (38:15). Red Bull Racing had a difficult weekend, so much so that Max and Lando had to have a laugh at Verstappens on board camera, and the balance of his race car, Tim and Jesse discuss that, and Sergio Perez’s penalty for his incident with Alex Albon (44:15). What does AlphaTauri do with their driver lineup for 2024 and is Logan Sargeant doing enough to keep his seat? (52:00). During Thursday’s press conference Max Verstappen responded to Toto Wolff’s comments post Italy igniting a war of words between the two teams (7:57). A conversation that has been doing the rounds is if anyone can catch up with Red Bull Racing for 2024 leading to the discussion of introducing balance of performance (15:35). Few weeks ago 80 year old Helmut Marko made discriminatory comments towards Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez, Marko eventually issued an apology, Sergio Perez spoke for the first time about it on Thursday in Singapore (24:30). Zhou Guanyu on Thursday announced that he would be back with Alfa Romeo/Sauber for 2024, but what happens to the Alfa Romeo, Sauber relationship (27:40). With Zhou locked up for 2024, that leaves three seats available for next season, two at AlphaTauri, and one at Williams, and who takes those seats (31:30). Haas hasn’t had the best of seasons so far, on Thursday they announced that they will ditch their current car concept by the USGP, and go in a different direction (36:28). Are the FIA and F1 on a collision course with each other over the new teams process that would issue in two new F1 teams under the current Concorde agreement (42:56). Last week the FIA issued the results from the 2022 cost cap where all teams passed, and just how important was it for Formula 1 that all teams had complied (52:33).

Andretti Autosport lost a million dollars in leaders circle pay out at the end of Sunday’s race (18:44). Callum Ilott faced online abuse after the race on Sunday, which has led to the IndyCar driver putting his twitter account on private (27:05). Colton Herta got to race his dads old 1998 IndyCar around Laguna Seca (32:31). Then Tim and Tom drop a grade on the 2023 IndyCar season (34:50).

On this episode of Nailing The Apex, Tim Hauraney sits down with President of Honda Performance Development (HPD) David Salters. David has been involved in building racing engines for a long time, starting with CART then moving over to building Mercedes V10 F1 engines, David walks us through how special the F1 V10 engines were, and how many engines McLaren would go through in one weekend during the V10 era (3:10). From working with Mercedes designing and building the V10, in 2006 David moved over to Ferrari F1 team and took the main position head of engine development, winning constructors championship in 2007, and 2008, while at Ferrari David worked hands on with some of the greats, and tells us about working with Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen (9:38). David was with Ferrari in 2008 when Felipe Massa lost the F1 drivers championship to Lewis Hamilton in the last few corners of the Brazilian Grand Prix and takes us through that day (13:27). While working in F1 and for Ferrari David worked with many Team Principals, and explains how Ross Brawn hired him at Ferrari (15:38). In 2013 when the new F1 V6 Hybrid Power Units were getting ready to be deployed, David tells us about the time Jean Todt, Bernie Eccelstone, came to check the noise that was coming out of the V6 Hybrid Power Units. Then talks us through how F1 missed the opportunity to tell the public just how efficient the Hybrid Power Units were (19:19). The F1 V6 Hybrid Power units are extremely complex, and David was the first to build them for Ferrari and he tells us just how difficult they were to conceptualize and execute (22:23). 2024 IndyCar will switch over to a 2.2 litre V6 Turbo Hybrid, Honda is involved in this process (27:18), David takes us through where the technology will live on the IndyCar and explains while certain elements are placed in particular areas, and how the push to pass, and regeneration will work on the Honda Power Unit (31:45). David tells us that the Hybrid technology won’t interfere with the sound of the Honda IndyCar engines (39:00)

On Sunday Alex Palou won the Grand Prix of Portland IndyCar race and became a two time IndyCar champion, Tim Hauraney is joined by Dutch Motorsports Reporter Jeroen Demmendaal to discuss his season. Max Verstappen wins the Italian Grand Prix and sets a record of 10 straight wins, Tim Hauraney and Mark Dailey from the Scuderia F1 Pod discuss (4:25).
