Tim Hauraney is joined by Mark Dailey from the Scuderia F1 Pod. Tim and Mark kick it off with their breakdown on the George Russell vs Max Verstappen first lap incident. How entertaining was the Sprint weekend format, and what could they change to make things better (02:06). Tim Hauraney sits down with Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward as the two launch into a lively discussion about oval racing and the dangers of it (1:32). Then Tim and Pato discuss how Pato handles not being in the car for weeks at a time, his training regime, and diet (06:21). In 2018 O’Ward won the IndyLights championship but wasn't given a full-time ride again until 2020 with Arrow McLaren. Kyle Kirkwood lead from pole for most of the race to score his first ever IndyCar race win, Tim and Jeroen take a deep dive into Kirkwood’s win, Andretti Autosport switching Bryan Herta over to Kirkwood’s car, and how would his son Colton handle that (1:00). 

Romain Grosjean has had a difficult start to his IndyCar season, but in Long Beach the French driver was impressive scoring P2 in the race (8:18). 

Marcus Ericsson is in a contract year with Chip Ganassi, and is awaiting an offer from the team, Long Beach saw Ericsson race his way to P3 taking back the lead in the drivers championship. Ericsson has had a great start to this season, and he has picked up right where he left off from 2022. (10:43)

Tim and Jeroen break down the incident between Pato O’Ward, Scott Dixon, and how both saw it (13:18). Then Tim and Jeroen run through the rest of the field (18:56). Marcus Armstrong has been very impressive for his first season of IndyCar racing, and Tim and Jeroen go over his race as well as who has impressed the most out of the rookies (23:26). Later Tim and Jeroen give their opinion on the three Arrow McLaren triple crown livery cars that will debut for the Indy 500 (36:10).

On this episode of Nailing the Apex, Tim Hauraney sits down with Canadian engineer and racing director for Arrow McLaren IndyCar team, Gavin Ward. Gavin has engineered some of the best drivers in the sport from the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Daniel Ricciardo to IndyCar’s Josef Newgarden and Pato O’Ward. 

Gavin takes us through his journey from working as a teenager in Canadian Formula Ford (1:23), to moving to the United Kingdom, to eventually being hired by Red Bull Racing (5:50). Later in his RBR career, Gavin tells us how he became Mark Webber's race engineer and his view on the “multi-21” saga between Webber and Vettel (14:08). Tim and Gavin then go into driving details and what separated Webber, Vettel, and Daniel Ricciardo from a driving stand point (19:07). Gavin explains the move from working in F1 to joining Team Penske in IndyCar and engineering Josef Newgarden to the 2019 title (27:40). Last season Gavin moved over to run the Arrow McLaren IndyCar team and he takes us through that journey and getting this team to the front of the field (31:39).
