Nature vs Narcissism

Welcome back to Nature vs Narcissism! This is another BONUS episode for you guys! We have been sharing some BONUS content lately as we have many topics that we’ve been wanting to cover but that don’t necessarily follow the theme for main feed episodes. So, we hope you enjoy!

We always talk about serial killers and how many of them were in law enforcement to some extent at some point in their life. So, we thought that a fun episode for you would be to share some lesser known killers who were involved, in some capacity, with law enforcement.

Join Heather and her Status Pending co-host Scott Fuller for this BONUS episode. We touched on this serial killer in a recent Status Pending episode as a potential suspect in one of our cases. Since we don’t typically cover serial killers on that podcast, we decided to record a bonus for our Nature vs Narcissism listeners! This serial killer was the true definition of a chameleon! We discovered a minimum of 6 aliases that he had over the years…but we truly believe that there were many more, as well as many more victims. We hope you enjoy! Let us know your thoughts on this case!!!

On July 20, 2012, 24-year-old James Holmes (whilst dressed in tactical clothing and bright orange dyed hair) set off tear gas grenades and shot multiple firearms into the Aurora, Colorado Century 16 movie theater midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises audience. His actions led to the death of 12 people and injuring 70 others; 58 of whom were injured from gunfire.
In this episode, Heather sits down with award winning author and attorney Kerrie Droban to discuss her latest book, Aurora: The Psychiatrist Who Treated the Movie Theater Killer Tells Her Story.

In their book, Dr Lynn Fenton; the psychiatrist who treated James Holmes, and Kerrie Droban take you into the minds of a mass shooter (James Holmes) and his psychiatrist (Dr. Lynn Fenton) and how she was affected long-term. Kerrie shares her experience with writing the book, working with/interviewing Dr. Fenton, as well as what she learned about Holmes based on his thoughts, actions, and treatment sessions with Fenton.

Kerrie highlights the fact that Holmes was actively getting help when he executed his tragic plan to kill dozens of people. She shares that this is proof that there is no blueprint when it comes to identifying when someone may do something so extreme. We can ask all the questions. We can report all the odd behaviors. But at the end of the day, we are all still learning about the criminal psyche and need to apply our knowledge and understanding to each situation on a case by case basis. We may never be able to predict and stop every single criminal who decides that they want to be a mass shooter/mass killer. But we can take what we learn from cases like Holmes’ and apply it to try and prevent future tragedies. Most often, these criminals are incredibly manipulative and calculating.

“Let’s not forget; every psychopath is a narcissist. Every sociopath is a narcissist. But not every narcissist is a psychopath or sociopath.” -Kerrie Droban

Kerrie’s goal with writing true crime books:
The goal of writing these books, for Kerrie, is to expose, to educate, to inform, and to give that platform to the victims and their loved ones. A platform for them to tell their story and celebrate the lives of these people. It is difficult to read but it’s insightful and the more that we talk about it and keep the conversation going; keep the memory alive.

This is Part 2 of the Peter Kurten case. For this episode, I have Brittany joining me to discuss our thoughts on the case as a whole as well as what we think is at play here. Was it nature? Nurture? A combination? Why?

Brittany gave this guy a nickname off-mic; it’s Quick Draw McGraw.

QUESTION FOR YOU: Do you have siblings? If so, can you share your experience with how each sibling’s personality and demeanor is? Is the oldest child more reserved? More emotional? Is the middle child the wild child? What about the youngest? Share your thoughts and experiences with us!

Born as Peter Kürten on May 26, 1883, to alcoholic abusive parents in Mulheim am Rhein, Germany. He was eventually referred to as the Vampire of Dusseldorf and the Dusseldorf Monster. Between February and November of 1929; Kurten committed no less than 9 murders, along with many attempted murders. Prior to this crime spree; in the years leading up to 1929; he was no stranger to the criminal world. Such activities included sexual assaults, burglary, arson, theft, threatening behavior, and attempted robbery, among other crimes. Aside from the crimes and murders that he was eventually convicted for; he confessed to the 1913 murder of a 9-year-old girl in Mulhein am Rhein as well as the attempted murder of a 17-year-old girl in Düsseldorf. Kürten’s moniker came from the fact that he would occasionally attempt to drink the blood from his victims' wounds. Another moniker, the "Düsseldorf Monster" was attributed to him, both because the majority of his murders were committed in and around the city of Düsseldorf, AND the savagery he inflicted upon his victims' bodies. Peter Kurten was executed in July 1931 at 48 years old. He is the German serial killer whose “widely analyzed career influenced European society’s understanding of serial murder, sexual violence, and sadism in the first half of the 20th century.”
For this episode, I tried to stick to the dates and the facts that we knew about him/his criminal life. In part 2, We will delve more into our thoughts regarding his crimes and behavior. So, join us tomorrow for Part 2 - where Brittany (from Where the Weird Things Are Podcast and I will do a deep dive discussion about the case, the people involved, our thoughts regarding nature vs nurture, and much more. This is part 2 of the Peter Stubbe/Stumpf episode. He is also known as the Werewolf of Bedburg. Heather and Brittany delve more into our thoughts on more than just the criminal/serial killer in this case. We talk a bit about our thoughts on werewolves and what the f*** was going on in the 1500s.

We also discuss whether or not we feel that he committed ALL of these gruesome crimes, or just some.

Part 1 is typically filled with information about the person of interest; such as where they were born, to whom, and what they were named by their parents. However, with this particular individual; we may not be able to cover all of those bases. But, we will do our best with the information that we have. I mean, this dude hasn’t been around since basically the 200s after all. And most of the information that IS known about him, comes from a 16-page pamphlet published in London in 1590; and rediscovered in 1920, by none other than an occultist. Which; we will come back to later. For now, I will tell you that he was called many different things. Some of his aliases were: Peter Stumpp (S-T-U-M-P-P), Peter Stube (S-T-U-B-E), Peeter Stubbe (with 2 Bs), Peter Stumpff (S-T-U-M-P-F), and some sources even referred to him as William Stumpf, Abal Griswold, Abil Griswold, and Ubel Griswold. ALthough there were many names for him and sources seem to use them interchangeably; one aspect remained the same across all sources. His moniker was “The Werewolf of Bedburg”. Too many names…and too many unknowns already; I know. But keep listening, this gets interesting.

This is Part 2 of the book review that Heather and Kelsey recorded as a BONUS & follow up to the Part 1 and Part 2 case coverage on Charles Schmid aka The Pied Piper of Tucson. **Please note: at the beginning of this episode; you will hear a disclaimer about the audio. We know; it is awful. We had some technical difficulties during the recording process and this is the cleanest that we could get it through tons of editing. The book is called I, a Squealer: THE Insider’s Account of the “Pied Piper of Tucson” Murders by Richard Bruns. This book is a firsthand account of the person Charles Schmid as Richard’s friend and murderer. Richard was the whistle blower who ended Schmid’s reign of terror in Tucson. But does Richard share everything he knows in the book? We will let you be the judge of that. Heather and Kelsey sit down and discuss their thoughts on the book as a whole, the case, and the players involved. We also present our own questions and theories throughout. We would love to hear from you and perhaps what your thoughts are on this case as well as the book. Please write us at [email protected]
