New Horizons

In this week's episode we return to the NSW/ACT State Division launch, held recently in Newcastle.  We hear from Graeme Innes firstly, then Joana Dori Novo, current chair of the State Division committee.

In this week's episode, we hear a speach given at the recent launch of the Blind Citizens Australia NSW ACT State Division, held in Newcastle on Saturday.  Michael Simpson a resident of New South Wales and a long-standing BCA member officially launches this first State Division and shares some of his memories of BCA, and BCNSW.

In this edition, we hear part two of  the interview with Hiroshi Kawamura of Japan, a member of the DAISY consortium.  We learn how the first standard was developed, various itterations since that point and what is in the future of DAISY.

In this week's episode we speak with returning guest, Jonathan Craig.  Jonathan was recently appointed editor of Blind Citizens News, BCA's premier written publication.  Recently, Jonathan published his first edition as editor, find out what is to be found inside, new methods of publication, and understand a bit more about Jonathan's approach to editing this long-running magazine.  Jonathan also invites us to submit content for the next issue.

This week brings the return of a very popular guest on New Horizons.  Phia Damsma, with Sonokids Australia, tells us of the latest in the BallyLand series of IOS apps, which assist young blind and vision impaired people to learn to use VoiceOver - the IOS screen-reader.  As well, we discuss a new initiative to teach primary school age children some of the concepts of coding.  Also, a brief demonstration of the latest in the BallyLand series.

Lauren Henley, policy and advocacy coordinator with BCA joins us to discuss the shameful lack of Audio Description on Australian television, and also some more ways to make your feelings heard about touchscreen ATMs and EFTPOS terminals.

In this week's programme we hear from two people who are exploring biology through the use of art.  An exhibition will be held at Monash University's Clayton campus in Melbourne where blind and vision impaired people can, potentially for the first time, feel a virus, and discover just how our immune system works.  We find out how the idea came about and how you can be a part of it.
