New Leader Workshop is all about proving New Leaders with an opportunity to grow and get better. Let's start with Carol Dweck's book Mindset.
It is important for us as Leaders to understand how a Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset are different and why it impacts how we interact with new challenges, feedback, and hard work.
Challenges
Growth Mindset: Challenges are worth it because even when we fail, we will learn and get better. A person with this perspective is willing to accept potential failure and understands that if they aren’t failing, they aren’t growing. New challenges are about the opportunity to get better and not about what people think about us.
Fixed Mindset: New challenges are only an opportunity to look bad. A person with this perspective will not want to take on new challenges. They’ll want to stick with what they know because doing something new can be risky and lead to failure.
Feedback
Growth: Feedback is a chance to grow. It is not about defining who we are in the present, it is about helping us be and do better in the future. We understand that we are nowhere near our potential and will always say “thank you” when someone makes an effort to help us by providing us feedback.
Fixed: Takes feedback personally and gets defensive. A person with this mindset is only interested in hearing what they do well. When someone provides constructive criticism, they are quick to explain how the feedback doesn’t apply or focus on how the feedback is being presented instead of looking for the value in how it can help them grow.
Hard Work
Growth: Hard work is not only worth it, it is necessary for us to reach our potential. Big changes don’t happen overnight. We understand the value in developing good habits and how consistency and sacrifice are worth the long-term rewards.
Fixed: There is no point in working hard. They think some people are successful and others are not. They argue that hard work is worthless because they don’t see the benefit.
As leaders, it is important that we see the potential in the people around us and in ourselves. Remember: your mindset is not fixed, and it can change depending on the situation. Self-awareness is key.
