Jesus raised the commandment against adultery from the act to the heart. In this Sermon on the Mount message, Pastor Dale explains why God gave the law and what Jesus was showing the religious people of His day.
1. God gave the law to protect marriage and families, to warn of the consequences of sin, and to show how much we need a Savior.
2. Jesus teaches that adultery begins in the heart, with a lustful look and desire.
3. Nothing we do on the outside can change the heart; as we anchor our faith in what Jesus did on the cross, the Holy Spirit is free to work in us.
Jesus took the commandment against murder and moved it from the hands to the heart. In this Sermon on the Mount message, Pastor Dale shows how anger, bitterness and unforgiveness matter to God and how the Holy Spirit helps us deal with them.
1. God's law against murder protects the life He created.
2. Jesus looks past outward obedience to the heart, where anger, insults and hatred are also judged.
3. Reconcile quickly. Unforgiveness breaks fellowship, and we should not let the sun go down on our anger.
4. We cannot do this on our own; it takes faith in Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit.
Why do so many people feel stuck in bondage, trying to please God by keeping rules? In this Sermon on the Mount message, Pastor Dale explains what Jesus taught about the law and where true righteousness comes from.
1. The law shows us how sinful we are; no one is made right with God by keeping it.
2. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not abolish it, so we would know we need a Savior.
3. True righteousness comes by anchoring our faith in Jesus and what He did on the cross, and the Holy Spirit then transforms us from the inside out.
Jesus told His followers, "You are the light of the world," which means there is no other light. In this Sermon on the Mount message, Pastor Dale shows what it looks like for born-again believers to shine in a dark world.
1. Born-again believers inspire hope: hope of God's provision, presence, protection, eternal life and answered prayer.
2. Born-again believers are involved in good works. Works do not save us, but faith and good works are inseparable.
3. Born-again believers intentionally glorify God in everything they do, in the community, at work and at home.
The Beatitudes do not end with the first four. Preaching a message Pastor Dale prepared, Pastor Cory continues the Blessed Life series, showing that Jesus ties real blessing to mercy, a pure heart, making peace, and standing firm when we are mocked for our faith.
1. God blesses the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
2. God blesses the pure in heart, for they will see God, in heaven and in His hand at work now.
3. God blesses the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
4. God blesses those persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
What does it take to live the truly blessed life, with God's supernatural power working on your behalf no matter what is going on around you? In week two of the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Dale walks through the first Beatitudes to show how Jesus says we receive that favor.
1. God blesses those who are poor in spirit, who admit every day that they need Him.
2. God blesses those who mourn, who are broken over their sin and what Jesus did on the cross.
3. God blesses the humble, whose strength is under the control of the Holy Spirit.
4. God blesses those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, and we are made right by faith in Jesus, not by our own works.
North Carolina's fishing industry is a $300 million business each year, yet Jesus said, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." In this mini-series on what Jesus said, Pastor Dale challenges the church to ask whether we are as invested in fishing for people as we are in fishing for fish.
1. Jesus calls everyone to follow Him, and if we are not fishing for people we are not following Him.
2. Jesus promises to transform everyone who follows Him, and the Holy Spirit does that work.
3. Jesus gives everyone who follows Him a mission, and we do it together as a community.
