The 10 Fold Bolton Murderess - Serial Killer Saturdays

1842 Little Bolton, and there have been two unexpected successive deaths in the Eccles household.  As Mrs Eccles goes to the factory to collect on the insurance policy of one of the dead, questions are asked. 
What unfolds is a stream of deaths dating back years to people within her immediate household.  What was particularly interesting was that in most of the cases, no discernible motive could be found – the paltry insurance to be collected was far smaller than the regular wages that had been handed over to her by the victim. Betty Eccles seemed to be under the illusion that she could talk her way out of the mountain of proof set against her.  It was said between 20,000 and 30,000 attended her execution.
We investigate the case of the ten-fold plus murderess from Bolton in today’s episode of Serial Killer Saturdays.

Murders in Cheshire - Frightful Fridays
News of the Times Episode 260 | 1861 & 1881
Our first case from 1861 is the famous Martin Doyle case – one of the few prisoners who, quite unusually, was executed for attempted murder.  The absolute repeated battering in the face of his victim who he left for dead was thwarted as she survived and managed to crawl into the road for help.  As she gave evidence with difficulty at his trial, it was said her features were so mangled it was hard to believe she was still alive.
Our second case from 1881 is the all too sad familiar case of a drunken spree of a couple that goes terribly wrong.  What sets this case apart was the incredibly horrible and unique way in which he killed her.  The principal witness in the trial was the nine-year-old daughter.

Love and Murder in 1700's - Wicked Wednesdays

Love and Murder, a dark timeless theme. In today’s episode we jump back to American revolutionary times to look at three cases where the dark side of love combines with murder.
1721 and Matthew Clarke, in want of money, slays a barmaid.  What made this crime so horrific is that he did it whilst kissing her.
1791 and “legal chastisement” spoils over to murder.  An interesting case that gives a window into life as a wife in 18th century England.
1794 and a mistress of a landed gentleman has been dumped as he moves forward and weds another.  Now ruined and with no prospects in sight, Anne plots revenge.

The Kilkenny Horror

This case from 1890 County Kilkenny Ireland is horrific by any standard, The brutality of the killing was said to rival the ripper – justifiably so.  Quiet Edward Hart invests all his spare time and any spare money he earns from fishing to upgrade the farm of his wife’s family.  Then, they sell the farm without telling hm and he is booted off as a trespasser.  Edmund utterly breaks and unleashes his terrible fury in an unexpected manner.

The Socialite Serial Killer

1894 Antwerp Belgium and one of the top leading social lights of the country is arrested for the murder of three relatives who were all heavily insured.  As the story unfolds into the life of a couple who were considered wealthy and leaders within society, what begins to become clear to investigators is that despite appearances, this was a woman desperate for money.  Spending far above actual income, and living on credit, it would seem that a family member had to die every time the creditors were closing in. 
As investigations are pursued, questions are asked regarding other deaths within the circle of Madame Joniaux

Murder at Ireland's Eye

We are in 1851 Ireland and miniature artist William Burke Kirwan and his lovely wife are on holiday in the beautiful coastal town of Howth.  A day with picnic is planned at the islet Ireland’s Eye where the boat drops them off.  They are alone.  At the designated pick-up time of 8 pm, there is no Mrs Kirwan.
This sensational case in its day is a “did he or didn’t he” case with a known artist at the time .  As police begin to investigate, a double life emerges…

Stories of Fatal Betrayal
News of the Times Episode 255 | 1887 & 1901
In today’s episode, we look at two cases where love takes a sinister turn into fatal betrayal.
In our first case from 1887 Preston, a young couple who have been dating several months, decide to make the bold move of giving up their domestic service jobs in England and move to America for a fresh start and a fresh life.  Annie, a young girl of virtuous temperament, insists that they marry before the long boat ride there.  Her partner wishes to wait for the marriage to take place upon arrival in their new country.  The disagreement leads to murder.
In our second case from 1901 Eastbourne, strange shots are heard from a locked room in a boarding house.  There, Alice is found slumped in a chair with a dangerous wound whilst Charly, her known beau, lies dead on the floor at her feet.  But who shot whom?  And why did the murder take place?

The Eight Fold Murderer - Serial Killer Saturdays
News of the Times Episode 253 | 1924
Within Germany, the case of Fritz Angerstein, the Eight-Fold Murderer, is still remembered today.
The brutal slayings take place in a rural village in Westphalia Germany in 1924.  Angerstein and his sickly wife live in a large company house which has two office rooms with staff on the bottom floor.  Some years before, Angerstein has begun siphoning off money from the company to pay off his own debts.  His wife, who has had poor health for some time, is joined by her mother with whom Angerstein has a difficult relationship.
Angerstein, who by all accounts doted on his wife, is distraught as his wife’s medical condition worsens.  His already poor relationship with his mother-in-law worsens.  Simultaneously, the company have discovered his embezzlement and confront him.
What unfolds is a horrific slaying of family, servants and company personnel with Angerstein initially stating that the slaughter was the work of 25 robbers who had escaped into the woods.
We look at the buildup, the crime and the capture of Germany’s Eight-Fold murderer in today’s episode of Serial Killer Saturdays.

The Bloody Trunk Case

This case, from 1889 and on the heels of Jack the Ripper, became an international crime drama of its day! 
A murderous couple has a plan to extract money from wealthy older men by enticing them with the charms of a young woman.
However, this plan involved a noose, a pulley system, a body bag and a trunk.
This killer couple crossed continents to try to avoid the police, with one of the murdering duo then falling for the second intended victim and setting up her former partner to take the fall.
A tale involving murder, betrayal, and a bloody trunk is today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.

The Murderous Court Jester - Frightful Fridays

In today’s episode, we are in Cumbria sometime in the 17th century, at Muncaster Castle owned by the Pennington family.  A favoured servant, Thomas Skelton, is with them.
Historically, many a tale exists of Tom Skelton who could be the original killer clown.  As the court jester, his job was to amuse and sometimes act as confidant to the family he served.  Tom, it would seem, took his role to a new step.  There are many tales of Tom directing passers by that he took a dislike to to their death.  It was said that he had killed hundreds in this way.
In this episode we look at the gory murder of the house carpenter who made the double mistake of teasing Tom and having an illicit relationship with the maiden of the house Helwise.
