In this special NGPF Podcast, Yanely interviews three high schoolers from Rhode Island: Lila Somvanshi, Matthew Tactacan & Penelope Tejada. They discuss why they are so passionate about financial education which led them to testify in favor of a bill that would increase access to this essential course. Enjoy hearing from these passionate advocates.
With animal spirits and speculation running rampant on Wall Street (SPACs, bitcoin, meme stocks to name a few), it seemed an ideal time to rebroadcast my conversation with Professor Malkiel, whose 1973 classic, Random Walk Down Wall Street, remains a must-read for investors. Enjoy!
Rock Star middle school educators Debbie L Savino and Eric Signman share some practical tips for creating a classroom culture of excellence for their middle school students, and some of their favorite NGPF middle school lessons and activities.
Thanks to Barb O'Neill for connecting me with this week's NGPF podcast guest. Micah Bender wears a few hats including leading financial literacy efforts at the state level in New Jersey. His side hustle involves providing financial education to college student-athletes. This brings together two of Micah's passions derived from 14 years as a personal finance teacher and sports coach. That passion is evident in our conversation that follows. Enjoy!
NGPF Podcast welcomes back Kelly Lannan from Fidelity to talk Gen Z and their increased interest and access to the world of investing (see Fidelity study here). The past year has seen increased stock market participation with the meme stock craze, new trading platforms with no fees and low minimums and the influence of social media (TikTok and WallStreetBets come to mind). Kelly shares what she is seeing in her role at Fidelity and how her company is embedding education into their apps geared for a younger audience. Enjoy!
Continuing on this theme of incredible young people channeling their passion for personal finance, this week on the NGPF podcast you will hear from high schooler Ella Gupta. We discussed her book, Gen Z Money $ense, which is best described as "a framework for anyone looking to build wealth and make their dreams a reality through investing and taking charge of their financial future."
Ella shares her motivation for writing the book and why she focused so much attention on investing. Her message throughout the book is one of empowerment and her thoughts on what to look for in investing apps (top of mind now for Gen Zers) should be required listening for all. Enjoy!
My Classroom is a short NGPF podcast series devoted to supporting the efforts of teachers. Each week we will speak with different teachers who will share timely tips, resources, and teaching strategies that can be implemented immediately into the classroom. Award-winning educators Derek D'Angelo and Joey Running discuss strategies to embed personal finance concepts into an economics class, and economics concepts into a personal finance class.
WOW! Have you ever had a conversation with an 11-year-old about the wisdom of index funds, the power of compounding returns and the process of opening a brokerage account? Nope, neither had I until I had the opportunity to talk to Rishi Vamdatt earlier this week. Enjoy!
We have a special guest on the My Classroom podcast. Candice Matthews Brackeen is the Founder and CEO of Lighthouse, the Cincinnati, OH-based portfolio service firm including accelerators Hillman and NewMe, and venture capital fund Lightship, where she serves as Managing Partner. Lighthouse companies work together in support of underrepresented, early-stage, transformational businesses. As CEO of Hillman, the first accelerator in the Midwest to provide support exclusively to this demographic, she has influenced state policy around economic inclusion in addition to establishing meaningful partnerships with companies like Proctor & Gamble, Kroger, and Chase, in support of Hillman’s work. She has over 15 years of entrepreneurial experience and founded the Cincinnati Chapter of the Black Founders Network (BFN), to address the need for increased diversity and inclusion efforts in the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. She holds a BA Economics from the University of Cincinnati and was a Hewitt-Kautz Fellow.
With Season 2 of Million Bazillion podcast launching this Tuesday (June 22nd), I was excited to sit down with Sitara Nieves, Executive Director of On-Demand at Marketplace and Jed Kim, host of Million Bazillion. If you are new to Million Bazillion, it's a podcast about money for kids and their families that helps to make money more understandable. Geared for middle school-aged kids, Sitara, Jed and team use questions from kids to explain taxes, the stock market and pricing anomalies (the $0.99 factor) as starting points to create engaging and fun programming. I know you will enjoy hearing from Sitara and Jed as they provide a "behind the scenes" look at the creative process behind Million Bazillion and a few teasers about what to expect in Season 2. Enjoy!
