  • Tim Talks To: Passionate and Creative Educator Andrea Stemper of Palmer High School (CO)
Thanks to Andrea Stemper of Palmer High School in Colorado Springs for the great conversation that we had recently. I got to know Andrea last summer at the inaugural NGPF Summer Institute. I was impressed by her passion and creativity as she shared lots of great activity ideas that she developed for her students. In fact, we turned one of those ideas into an activity "Let's Make A Mutual Fund" for our new Teach Investing in Two Hours lesson (see Resource #7 for the activity). In this podcast, you will hear Andrea's process for developing new projects, how she has advocated for financial education in her community and the message she would like for her all of her students to walk away with after taking her course. Enjoy!

  • Tim Talks To: NGPF Fellow Amy McCabe of Culpeper High School (Virginia)
Thanks to Amy McCabe for taking the time to participate in this recent NGPF Podcast. I got to know Amy during our inaugural Summer Institute in 2016 and was struck by her passion for teaching and for ensuring her students get the skills they need to succeed in their financial lives. In this podcast, you will learn from Amy what it's like to teach in a state with a personal finance mandate. She discusses her approach to teaching challenging topics, such as investing and insurance and how she injects story-telling into her lessons. You will also discover what Amy bought for $10 recently that has brought great joy into her life. Enjoy!

  • Tim Talks To: NGPF's Jessica Endlich About Teaching Investing in 2 Hours

We like to try different things at NGPF so this week we decided to take a new tack with the podcast and use it to discuss a recent lesson we created, "Teach Investing in 2 Hours." The lesson's title matches its goal to teach students in a compressed time frame enough so that they could confidently make a wise choice for their 401(k) (or other retirement) plan. We have heard time and again from educators that investing is the most difficult topic for them to teach their students. The seemingly innumerable investing options (where do I start and end?), the confusing jargon (how do I explain a P/E ratio to a novice investor?) and the lack of experience (I need to be able to manage my own investments before I can teach others) all hinder their performance. With the world moving away from defined benefit plans (pensions) toward DIY or defined contribution plans, young people need to understand that their investment choices will impact their options, such as when they will be able to retire. We had fun developing this lesson and hope this podcast piques your interest enough to try it in your classroom too! • Tim Talks To: Odelia Younge and Jennifer Kabaker of Digital Promise
Many personal finance teachers don't feel confident teaching the subject. There are often hurdles to participating in effective professional development including distance, dollars and relevance. The good news is that there are innovative organizations creating solutions to this problem. I spoke with leaders at one of these innovative companies, Digital Promise, about their micro-credentialing platform, which is designed to build finance educator competencies. Thanks to Odelia Younge and Jennifer Kabaker for discussing their micro-credential program and how educators can benefit from this new approach to professional development. Enjoy!

  • Tim Talks To: Internet Car Sales Manager, Andrei Smith
You never know where you might meet your next podcast guest. I met Andrei at an Audi dealership recently. We had a nice conversation and he told me how passionate he was about financial literacy (he even went and listened to some of the NGPF podcasts!). I sensed his enthusiasm and his perceptiveness and thought he would be great on a podcast and I was RIGHT. Andrei will share with you some insider tips on buying a car, describe the psychology behind car purchases that he has witnessed in the hundreds of transactions he has closed and explain how a bad credit score can really hurt you when it comes to car loans. For your students considering sales as a career, he describes the skills needed to succeed in this Darwinian profession. Enjoy the conversation! I certainly did!

  • Tim Talks To: Author, Columnist and Personal Finance Advocate, Beth Kobliner
I had a great conversation with Beth Kobliner recently. Beth has an incredible personal finance focused CV. She's been a columnist at Money Magazine, authored one (and soon to be two) New York Times Bestsellers (Get a Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your Twenties and Thirties), served on the President's Advisory Council on Financial Capability, and gave financial advice to Elmo on Sesame Street (and a whole lot more too)! In this NGPF podcast, Beth shares the money lessons she learned growing up in Queens, New York as well as the motivation for her latest book, Make Your Kid a Money Genius, to be released in February. You will benefit from Beth's insights on how to invest, use credit cards wisely and a simple test to control those impulsive purchases. Parents will find Beth's new book a godsend in describing developmentally appropriate actions to build that financial decision-making muscle that your children need to thrive in this financially complex world. Thanks to Jeff Shirey of Avonworth Middle and High School (Pittsburgh, PA) for joining the NGPF podcast recently. In addition to being an accomplished salsa dancer outside the classroom (his living room has a dance floor), Jeff is a spreadsheet whiz inside the classroom. I became aware of Jeff's work through this news story that focused on his passion for spreadsheets. Jeff shares his insights on favorite projects, how he introduces spreadsheets to his middle schoolers and how he differentiates instruction for his more advanced students. You will certainly walk away with some ideas on how to incorporate spreadsheets in your classroom. Enjoy!
