After a few weeks of sickness, the Behill brothers are back! Thank you to all of you for the good vibes and messages you sent our way; it really did help. We needed time for our voices to get back to normal. So, we're back!

In this new episode, let's just chill and talk about some Indigenous news, events, and films. This is something we're going to do about once a month or after a real gnarly episode. We don't really know what to call this type of show yet, so bear with us. We are asking the listener (you) to decide on the name. Check out our IG to get in on the name.

In this episode, we talk about the Phoenix Suns basketball team and the amazing things they are doing for the Indigenous community. They created their city edition jerseys inspired by the first people of their state. This is led by Senior Director of Live Entertainment Shawn Martinez, who is of the Navajo Diné nation. With help from the NBA stars, this is a great way to celebrate the 22 federally recognized tribes of Arizona.

After that, we jump into a Sundance Film Festival documentary called 'Sugarcane.' This documentary takes you through an investigation into abuse and missing children at an Indian residential school, igniting a reckoning on the nearby Sugarcane Reserve.

In this episode we jump back into oral traditions while we are at the tail end of winter. Winter is the time to tell stories, be with family, and remember the ones who have passes. We are thrilled to tell you a few Chumash oral traditions in this episode, where we jump into stories from the book "December's Child." Join us as we journey through the oral stories passed down through the years of the Chumash people.

Today, we're taking about the struggles faced by the Yanomami people in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. The Yanomami face significant challenges due to illegal gold mining and oil drilling encroaching on their ancestral lands. These activities disrupt not only their homes but also the delicate balance of the entire ecosystem.

The children are the most vulnerable in this scenario. These illegal operations often lure them with false promises, leading to drug dependency and exposing them to unthinkable forms of abuse. It's a heartbreaking reality that we can't ignore.

And when the Yanomami resist these intrusions, violence ensues. This peaceful community, finds themselves facing aggression when they stand up against illegal miners and drug traffickers.

We are hoping that by understanding their struggles, we can advocate for policies that protect indigenous rights and the Amazon rainforest. Our collective support is crucial to ensuring the Yanomami's voice is heard on an international level.

So, let's use this knowledge to raise awareness. Share it, discuss it, and help shine a light on the Yanomami's plight. Together, we can work towards a more sustainable future, preserving not just their cultural heritage but the entire Amazon rainforest.

Join us in Part 2 of little people . In todays episode we go into the fascinating world of little people in Mesoamerica and South America. Our exploration takes us through four distinct  beings: Chaneques, Kurupi, Pombero of the Guarani people, and Chullachaqui of Peru.

We kick off with Chaneques, depicted as childlike figures with elderly faces. Known for their ability to mislead and cause individuals to go missing, Chaneques are believed to induce memory lapses linked to their journey to the Underworld. Discover the rituals needed to reunite the soul with the body and the mysterious desiccated kapok tree serving as the entryway to the realm.

Next up is Kurupi, the god of sexuality, residing in the untamed woodlands. With a diminutive and hairy appearance, Kurupi is the guardian of forests and wildlife, holding sway over the wild realms. Listen as we explore his most distinctive feature—a large member wrapped around his waist like a belt.

Moving on to Pombero, we unravel the mysteries surrounding this woodland creature. Known for mimicking the sounds of nocturnal birds, Pombero is considered a guardian of avian inhabitants. Explore the lore surrounding his whistling and the fearful repercussions of incurring his wrath.

Our journey concludes with Chullachaqui, notorious for luring victims deep into the jungle. Utilizing shape-shifting abilities to mimic long-lost family members, Chullachaqui's uncanny mimicry makes him nearly indistinguishable. Uncover the chilling accounts describing his appearance as a short man dressed in tattered clothing, provocatively challenging others to a fight.

     As we close out our series we jump into the Occupation of Alcatraz in 1965, a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for Native rights. Learn about the motivations, challenges, and triumphs of the activists who repurposed the abandoned island prison as a symbol of resistance and a demand for justice.
      The occupation was led by a group of Native American activists, primarily from the Red Power movement, who sought to draw attention to the historical and contemporary injustices faced by Indigenous peoples in the United States.
     The activists, who identified as part of the "Indians of All Tribes," highlighted the broken treaties, forced relocations, and cultural suppression that marked the history of Native Americans.
     The choice of Alcatraz, the former federal prison, as the site of the occupation was symbolic. Activists argued that the U.S. government had promised surplus federal land to Native Americans, and Alcatraz, being an unused federal property, represented a claim to these promised lands. Natives cited the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), which stated that abandoned federal lands could be reclaimed by Native peoples. They proclaimed the "Indians of All Tribes" as the rightful owners of Alcatraz.
     Living conditions on Alcatraz were challenging, with limited resources and harsh weather. The activists faced logistical difficulties, including the lack of fresh water and electricity. The occupation gained widespread media coverage, drawing attention to the issues faced by Native Americans. This coverage played a crucial role in raising awareness and garnering support for the broader Native American rights movement.
     While the Occupation was not necessary a success it is considered a pivotal moment in the Native American rights movement, inspiring subsequent activism and contributing to a shift in public perception and government policies toward Indigenous issues. The occupation laid the groundwork for future Indigenous activism and emphasized the importance of self-determination and cultural preservation for Native American communities.

Let's get in to part 3 of Alcatraz, in this episode we go over the start of the federal prison, the notorious inmates, and the close of the prison.  Alcatraz, often dubbed "The Rock," began its journey as a federal prison in 1934. Its location on a desolate island in San Francisco Bay made it an ideal site for housing some of the most notorious criminals in American history. The prison was designed to hold prisoners who caused trouble at other penitentiaries or were considered extremely dangerous.

Notable inmates included the likes of Al Capone, the infamous Chicago mob boss, who served time for tax evasion. Another was George "Machine Gun" Kelly, a notorious gangster. The Birdman of Alcatraz, Robert Stroud, although famous for his bird studies, was actually incarcerated at Leavenworth and never kept birds while at Alcatraz.

Alcatraz was characterized by its stringent security measures and the belief that it was inescapable. Despite this reputation, there were attempts to escape, one of the most famous being the 1962 attempt by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers. They crafted dummy heads to fool the guards and managed to escape through tunnels but were presumed to have drowned in the bay during their getaway.

The prison faced deteriorating infrastructure and escalating maintenance costs, leading to its closure in 1963. The isolated island prison was deemed too expensive to maintain and had lost its efficacy as newer, more advanced facilities emerged. After its closure, Alcatraz gained notoriety as a tourist destination and a symbol of America's criminal justice system.
