We know we're supposed to grow in faith in Christ and love for others, but we often struggle with the how. As we kick off our new sermon series in Colossians, we find that Paul's pastoral prayer illuminates two sources of life: the hope stored up in heaven for us, and the knowledge of God's will. The more we drink from these sources, the more we will grow.

Rejoicing and celebration (i.e., joy) is serious business in the Bible. Joy is our strength and our destiny. God is infinitely joyful, and, because we are created in his image, we are made for joy. However, because of sin, we often miss out on joy or we fail to cultivate it. The discipline of celebration is designed to get our habits and spirits in line with why Christ died for us: for his joy and ours.

The disicpline of rest (i.e., Sabbath) is a core spiritual discipline. The need for Sabbath rest is built into the fabric of our nature not simply to rejuvenate us physically. It is meant, more fundamentally, to build us up into the creatures that God wants us to be. It is through Sabbath rest that we experience the fullness of God and ourselves.

Our image-based society serves as a great impediment in our relationship with God. For our God has chosen to be revealed in language, and we can only become more deeply rooted in in our knowledge of God by engaging in the written word. Of course, such reading begins with the Bible, but it does not end there. As we engage in various types of books, we will grow not only in godliness and wisdom. but also become people of greater hope and peace.

God has ordained solitude and silence as critical means of spiritual formation. And the increasing difficulty to find the time and space for it in today's society only further highlights our need to pursue it. But when we do carve out the time, God will rejuvenate our hearts and re-ignite our love relationship with Him.

The life of faith is one of disciplined perseverance fueled and driven by the hope we have in Christ. A diciple's life is one with a singular goal -- becoming like the one we serve, Christ. All the seasons and experiences of life are appropriated to accomplish this goal. We leverage the grace in which we stand and use it to propel us into a disciplined life of training toward realizing this goal. This results in our sanctifiction and transformation and fullness and joy.

Fasting is an important spiritual discipline that is profoundly connected to our physical bodies. It is an expressive act connected to prayer and can result in increased self-control, wisdom about how being embodied creatures impacts our lives and relationship with God, deeper identification with others, and breathrough both interally and in world events. A true fast though is concerned first and foremost with the will of God. Those who fast correctly will find their hearts aligning to the purposes of God.

By looking at his song during a time of suffering, we glean lessons regarding how we should pray in our time of social distancing, such as remembering what God has done and preaching to ourselves.

The miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is remarkable in itself. But we also learn much about how we should approach death by how Jesus reacts before actually performing the miracle. And of course, Jesus' resurrection from the dead has the last word and empowers us to not fear death.

The top priority for disciples of Jesus is to maintain a vital connection to Jesus. Because he is the vine, only by our connection to him will we be fruitful. The vineyard metaphor is replete with important lessons regarding the source and impact of a real, vital discipleship rooted in Christ.
