  • 347: TOP 5 GIRL GROUP SONGS (BEST & WORST) / PHOENIX REVIEW

The dynamic duo of Craig and Zara welcome you into their whirlwind week of giggery, continental trips and girl group delights… and disasters.

If you love the show and want to support our weekly endeavours, please consider hitting up Patreon.com/noencore. Every little bit helps!

ACT ONE: With Dave doing Berlin, we’re free to wax lyrics about our night out with Bob Dylan - and call out Dave Fanning.

ACT TWO (13:02): Paying tribute to Low’s Mimi Parker and, sadly, more, before Hall of Fame shenanigans and our beloved Bono get us smiling again.

ACT THREE (41:00): Running the rule over Phoenix’s Alpha Zulu. Spoiler alert: Zara hates Craig’s favourite ever song from the Versailles band.

ACT FOUR (53:09): Top 5 Best and Worst Girl Group Songs… just as soon as Zara gets her revenge on Craig with an impromptu quiz.

  • 346: TOP 5 SONGS FROM THE 1950s

Break out your best Letterman and/or leather jacket and grab the Brylcreem - it's time to turn the clock back to Dave's long-established favourite era of music - THE 1950s~!

A packed episode of NO ENCORE features quite the throwback, alongside a typically stacked, probably somehow controversial news section. TURN IT UP!

ACT ONE (7:42): A tumultuous news section takes in some big losses in the world of music, yet more essential Bono chat, and the nation's favourite song of all time?!

ACT TWO (53:07): Top 5 Songs From The 1950's

  • Before The ENCORE #14 | Philip Magee

Welcome back listener! It's colder and darker this month for sure but I'm happy to say that this interview brought me a lot of warmth, and hopefully it does so for you as well.

This month is a very special episode for me. I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down with the wonderful Philip Magee for this episode; a phenomenally prolific music producer and mix engineer but also a mentor and friend. Phil's discography speaks for itself, having produced & engineered for world-renowned international acts such as Kodaline & The Script, Miles Kane, Sisqo & Delta Goodrem, and having his foot firmly rooted at the beating heart of Irish music working with The Academic in the early stages of their career, as well as Gavin James, Westlife, The Coronas, True Tides, The Blizzards, and many, many, many more.

When I first came up with the concept for this podcast, Phil was the first name I thought about and the reason being that I feel I truly wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today without him, his influence and his guidance. As well as hearing all about Phil's work ethic, his recording improvisation with dictaphones and VHS tapes, you'll also hear about my start and how I ended up moving away from a life as a band member towards becoming the producer and mix engineer I am today.

Thanks as always and if you do love what we do here, kindly share it with a friend or consider signing up to our Patreon here for bonus content.

Back in November - stay warm, everyone!

  • 345: TOP 5 SONGS INTENDED FOR OTHER ARTISTS FT. NEIL DEXTER / ARCTIC MONKEYS REVIEW

Did somebody say 'stacked episode', did they?! Well, if you did, congratulations – welcome to an absolutely stacked episode.

NO ENCORE is back with Dave Hanratty, Craig Fitzpatrick and eventual special guest Neil Dexter, here to unpack his excellent debut album I'll Be Ready and get involved in a vintage Top 5 scrum. We also have some music news and would you believe it; another album review. Wild scenes unfold.

Your support is most welcome for this little independent podcast project we love – hit up patreon.com/noencore for bonus content if you feel inclined, and do please consider telling a friend about the show – you just can't beat that word-of-mouth love.

ACT ONE (4:59): Gerry Adams possibly maybe allegedly inadvertently reveals some home truths while addressing the whole 'Bono IRA death threats' situation, Pitchfork readers have their perhaps predictable say, being married to a Beatle isn't all it's cracked up to be, and a fantastic James Bond theme is up for debate – it's the news.

ACT TWO (21:09): Arctic Monkeys leave the cosmos and return to Earth, if not to their indie-rock roots. It's time to pop the hood and give The Car a thorough inspection.

ACT THREE (42:49): Having magically materialised in-studio midway through the album review, the charming Neil Dexter takes us through debut album I'll Be Ready.

ACT FOUR (1:00:08): Neil sticks around to face off against Dave and Craig's combined Top 5 – well, mostly Craig's as it turns out – as the boys consider the Top 5 Songs Intended For Other Artists.

  • 344: TOP 5 SONGS IN THE NAME OF LOVE / THE 1975 REVIEW

We go again. Dave Hanratty and Craig Fitzpatrick team up to debate the merits of love in a musical context. They also check in on Matty Healy's latest profound-or-otherwise declarations and consider the week in music news. It's NO ENCORE and it's here to brighten up your day.

Also, we have a brand new episode of our recommendations corner NO AUX CORD out right now over on patreon.com/noencore if you'd like to sign up and support the show.

ACT ONE (5:13): Little Simz triumphs at the Mercury Music Prize but should Harry Styles have even been allowed to participate? Phoebe Bridgers does a very Phoebe Bridgers thing. Bono reveals some troubling ghosts from the past. And the latest on the two Amy Winehouse biopics in production – it's the news.

ACT TWO (24:12): The 1975 return with another chart-topping record in the form of Being Funny in a Foreign Language. Dave and Craig consider the record from a review perspective and weigh up the band's career to date.

ACT THREE (43:52): Top 5 Songs With 'Love' in the Title.

  • 343: TOP 5 SONGS INSPIRED BY BOOKS

As the lads turn over a new(s) leaf, what better time to get acquainted with the impact of the written word on popular – or otherwise – music?

That's right, it's the kind of Top 5 that would be right at home in a library... until things get much too noisy, of course.

ACT ONE (3:30): Animal Collective fall prey to an increasingly difficult touring industry, Tom DeLonge rejoins his pop-punk family, Craig David says No! Selecta, Beyoncé takes on Right Said Fred, and some weird Wombles chatter – it's the news.

ACT TWO (23:41): Top 5 Songs Inspired by Books.

  • 342: TOP 5 SONGS ABOUT THE COLD

Turn up the heating (if you can afford it). Break out the long hot water bottle (if you have one). Stir that hot chocolate into oblivion (or gently, if you prefer). It's time to take a musical deep-dive into all things FREEZING COLD.

Dave Hanratty and Craig Fitzpatrrick convene in the warm environs of Sonic Architect Adam HQ for another round of NO ENCORE. Let's go, baby!

ACT ONE (6:59): Coolio and Loretta Lynn remembered. Roger Waters is a wanted man. Björk runs up that critical hill (once Dave and Adam have their say on the new Slipknot album, that is). Liam Gallagher defends THE KING. Dave Mustaine just wants to hear from his old buddy James. It's the news.

  • 341: TOP 5 WORK SONGS / OVERHEAD, THE ALBATROSS INTERVIEW

Following an unavoidable snafu or two last week, Dave Hanratty and Craig Fitzpatrick return and thus NO ENCORE is reborn anew~!

We are indeed back, back, back with a stacked episode. We've got news. We've got a brand new contentious pop culture list. We've got OVERHEAD, THE ALBATROSS. And we've got a Top 5 dedicated to the hard-working souls of the world. Let's go...

ACT ONE (4:06): Kanye West pays respects. Mel C sets the record straight. Rihanna gets ready to play ball. Nile Rodgers finally finds somewhere new to gig. Pitchfork has a new list. Dave muses upon the acting chops of one Harry Styles. It's the news!

ACT TWO (25:45): Ireland's finest post-rock heroes Overhead, The Albatross have finally returned from the wilderness. Vinny Casey and Luke Daly sit down with the boys to talk about their comeback, new single 'L'appel du Vide', intrusive thoughts, getting 'match-fit' again, what filmmaker they would love to work with, and plenty more.

ACT THREE (1:04:50): Clock in for our Top 5 Songs About Work.

  • Before the ENCORE #13 | Richard Dowling

*Return of The Mack by Mark Morrison plays intensely*

Sonic Architect Adam here, in your feeds on a FRIDAY of all days! Why, I hear you ask? Well, unfortunately due to circumstances outside of all at NO ENCORE HQ's control, Dave and Craig have been unable to record this week. All is ok, don't worry, but in their place this week I've moved up my return to Before The ENCORE by a couple of days. Things will be back to normal next week, all going well!

This episode spans borders. Well, county borders that is.

For this month's recording, I got in my car and travelled to Limerick City, The 061 itself, to visit mastering engineer Richard Dowling. Richard's work spans decades and his client base is worldwide. His discography boasts some genuinely iconic songs, of which you will definitely know many. Don't believe me? See for yourself here.

We sat down in his studio to discuss the whens, wheres, whys and everything else of what is still broadly considered a mysterious but entirely essential part of the music creation process. If you'd like to learn more about Richard, you can find all the info you need and more on wavmastering.com.

    Chat next month!

All that and all the news that's fit to podcast.

ACT ONE (4:56): This week's round-up of news includes Queen-related fallout, Taylor Swift's latest legal troubles, some surprising disharmony that met Garth Brooks upon his long-awiated return to Dublin, and a few words for Sam Fender, Britney Spears and Nick Cave.

ACT TWO (32:54): Daithí takes us through his new album and what's next amidst a very fruitful time for the man.
