You can tell from the first ten minutes of this episode that even though we're all-in on Black History Month we still also want to talk about monster movies. Once we get it out of our system, though, we turn our nerdy gazes to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. We both loved rewatching this gorgeous movie so we could talk about it with y'all.

We own this on Blu-ray, but it's also streaming from the usual suspects. It's available to rent on Vudu for three or four bucks.

*clinkety-clink* What's that? It's Temperance's cocktail! *squeakety-squeak* And that? Ian's chair! What cute little touches that were definitely intentional and not just impossible to edit out. Ian went classic and spooky with Son of Ingagi, an early horror film featuring cryptic messages, hidden passages, ape-man, and the music of The Toppers. Unfortunately it was still slightly too spooky for Temperance. Oh nooooo!

This is free on Amazon Prime with a subscription, but a couple of different users have uploaded the full thing to YouTube for free so just watch it there. It's like an hour and ten minutes so check it out and let us know what you think!

This month we are going to discuss how annoying it is that Black stories only get prioritized by streaming algorithms during February. Simultaneously we will be prioritizing Black stories during February. Contradictory? Maybe, but you knooooow we gonna dissect it. We kicked things off with Dope, which was Temperance's pick. Ian talks about Edgar Wright and musicality for a little bit, and Temperance points out how tropes like "getting the girl" can partially undo otherwise confident movies. Ian's cat, Leroi, guest stars by screaming in the background.

Content Warning: There is some violence in this movie. A man is shot during a robbery, another guy accidentally shoots himself in the leg. There is a lot of imagery related to drug use. We talk about gun violence, and Temperance describes a movie scene where a child accidentally shoots themselves and another child is blamed for it.

Hey y'all. We rounded out this turbulent January with the documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution, which was Ian's final pick. It was and is SO GOOD. We talk about counterculture movements, sexuality, and Godzilla. We learn about Woodstock? More important than all of this, we came away from the past few weeks with a deeper understanding of what documentaries can do, as well as how they create a whole host of sociocultural tangles. Hopefully you guys dug it. Stay tuned for next month's theme/preoccupation!

Hi y'all. You may have noticed that it is WEDNESday, which is a little off-brand for us. Listen to this episode to hear why we're a day late posting our episode on Temperance's second documentary pick, Baraka. We also discuss whether or not its possible for something to be non-narrative and the complicated nature of a documentary that explores so so many different cultures. And we FINALLY talk about The Hobbit movies, which is possibly the most divisive subject that exists in our relationship.

THIS IS FREE ON YOUTUBE. The quality doesn't look half bad, either. It's also free with Amazon Prime and you can get it on iTunes and stuff. There's a film on Kanopy called Baraka, but its unrelated.

Content Warning: This is possibly the most content-warning heavy movie we've watched yet. While we don't discuss any of these things, this documentary features footage shot at a concentration camp, intensely unpleasant scenes of factory farming that border on violent, and a funeral cremation where human remains are prominently visible. Maybe check the Parents' Guide on IMDb because we may have missed something.

Ian spent all of two seconds on Google when it came to choosing A Normal Life: Chronicle of a Sumo Wrestler. Time well spent, as you might be able to gather from the convo that he and Temperance have about BLM, the intimacy of the filmic gaze, toxic masculinity, and gay sumo subculture. Temperance also gets revenge on Ian for calling out her Fruit Snack addiction last episode by hitting record while he was munching on a Klondike bar. It's time you know that we're very much into snacks.

We could only find this one on Amazon. It's one of the rare cases when we both recommend renting it from Evil Corp because the doc is that interesting.

The one-act play that Temperance wrote and directed, A Poem Play, premieres online on January 8th! Temperance is part of a panel of directors participating in a live online Q+A before the event. You can find all the info by clicking HERE.

I don’t know what was in the air this week, but there is some SALTY language in this episode. It sounds like Ian is holding onto a lot of repressed dragon betrayal. It’s our first week of documentaries and Temperance picked the 2016 film Life, Animated. If this episode is anything to judge by, you’re in for some good conversations and a wild ride this month. Special guest appearance by Seal Man.

livianeutronbomb won the Jingle Jangle Jiveaway, and she chose the movie Strictly Ballroom! It gave us the opportunity to talk at length about dance movies, as well as the ways in which dance has touched our own lives. Temperance once tried tap dancing, and Ian took a couple of Bollywood aerobics classes at a gym. You'll want to write all this down for Trivia Night.

The episode is a little late, but it's also Christmas week so all bet's are off! If either of us wear anything but pajamas before the 27th that'll be your yuletide miracle. Big stuff this episode. As you're doubtless aware, we're announcing the winner of the Jingle Jangle Jiveaway this week! Temperance springboards off Ian's pick (It's a Wonderful Life) in order to get to real juicy convos.
