In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Vanessa Preston about trauma and its impact on various aspects of our lives including our relationship with food. Vanessa is a Mental Health Social Worker, Psychotherapist, and Nutritionist in Australia (originally from Kentucky). She has provided assessment and therapy services for 14 years and specializes in treating posttraumatic stress disorder and complex trauma. Vanessa is the Body and Food Freedom Program creator and the host of the Body and Food Freedom Podcast where she supports women to make peace with food and their bodies. Vanessa’s group program focuses on self-compassion, shame resiliency, body image healing, and intuitive eating.
Some of the topics we discussed include:
Vanessa provides a fantastic description of what trauma is and how it impacts us in a variety of ways including our relationship with food.
How men are often less inclined to express hurts and emotional struggles and how this can impact our eating habits and behaviors even when the traumatic experience has nothing to do with food directly.
How dieting negatively impacts those who are trying to work through their trauma.
How non-diet approaches like Intuitive Eating address the needs of those who are recovering from trauma. This was such a wonderful conversation that I know I'll return to again and again and will be sharing with my clients.
