North eastern Syria is experiencing a drastic climate shift due to global warming. Last summer temperatures reached highs of nearly 50 degrees, 10 degrees higher than the previous seasons. As the region undergoes a process of desertification, the question of water supply remains an essential issue that must be resolved. However, the climate is not the only contributing factor to the lack of water. For the past 10 years, water levels flowing from Turkey into the Euphrates River have been abnormally low, which in turn has led to a food shortage in the Kurdish regions of Syria. Many Syrians – who are living in the rebel-controlled territory without their basic needs being met – must make the difficult choice to stay and face an all but certain death or leave the country.
