Today is November 9
Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.
Take a moment and quiet yourself. Take a deep breath. Welcome God’s presence. And say, “Come Holy Spirit.”
Today’s reading is from the book of 2 Kings, chapter 22.
8 Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the LORD.” 10 Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.
11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes. 12 He gave these orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Akbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king’s attendant: 13 “Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the LORD’s anger that burns against us because those who have gone before us have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us.”
This is a beautiful story about the experience of the word of God being lost and recovered. Think for a moment about when the word of God became real to you. Maybe you had an experience like the King, who when you first heard the words you were convicted about the ways that you hadn’t lived out the word. Or maybe you grew up hearing the words of the Bible, but you didn’t understand them. And then all of a sudden, you had this deep understanding that the word was for you. Can you remember that moment in your life? Sometimes, even after having an experience of hearing the word for the first time, the words can become dull to us. Our hearts can grow cold or callous to the word of God. As you listen to the passage again, ask God for a new heart for his word.
As we close our time today, can you ask God to breathe on the word of God, the scriptures, for you? Can you ask them to come alive to you? Can you ask that they be sharp like a sword? Can you ask that they be a light to your path? Can you ask them to be living and active in your life? Can you ask that your heart would desire to be obedient to the word?
