Pierre Poilievre says he's running to be Canada's next prime minister, skipping right over the need for him to win the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada. He's either ignoring or taking for granted the will and intention of the party.

His candidacy announcement flirts with the fringes of facts and and champions the language of the Ottawa occupiers. It's a string of cliches and bumper sticker tactics. What does it mean to be "the freest people on Earth?" What's clear in all of this, the fringe among the "freedom" convoy aren't listening to the fact checked mainstream media. They are listening to Poilievre. And he's already setting media as the enemy. Buckle up. This is going to be one of the messiest periods of politics in this country.

Erin O'Toole's political obit will be read by the end of the day but it was written back in October when his caucus planted an IED on  his leadership path. It's kind of appropriate that his "fellow" Conservatives are using the clout of the "REFORM ACT" to make him pay for his progressive conservative tack. In this episode of The Daily Brief, how can the Conservative Party of Canada be struggling to find it's soul when it's never really had one. Even under Stephen Harper, the Conservatives only had to be better than a weak bumbling opposition.

The numbers are staggering. Researchers say the "lost years" hit 1.25 million when they extend the number of unintentional ODs to those between 10 and 24. It certainly punctuated my reaction to Dopesick, the limited series that tracks the lengths Purdue Pharma went to cover its tracks while it developed and promoted OxyContin. We may be able to claim we didn't see COVID-19 coming. But the opiod crisis is in plain view. More than 100 thousand Americans died of opiod overdoses during the 12 months ending July 2021.
