The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3 percent, which was also worse than expected and the highest level since 2021. The Labor Department reported on Thursday that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits—a proxy for layoffs—rose last week to the highest level since June.

A federal judge in California has ruled that the Trump administration unlawfully used Marines and National Guard troops in Los Angeles.
