Odd and Untold

Gettysburg is practically synonymous with ghost stories and haunted locations. There are even reported Bigfoot sightings in the area. But what many people don't realize is that there have been many UFO sightings over the town and historic battlefield throughout the years. This week's stories include encounters with two very unusual and atypical UFOs, strange lights in the sky maneuvering oddly, and ghost hunters seeing an object that may not be a UFO at all. Vermont is home to all sorts of bizarre cryptids, and most famously to Champ, the Lake Champlain monster. But like its New England sister states, it has its fair share of Bigfoot sightings as well. So this week I'm looking at Chittenden and Lamoille counties in northern Vermont. Stories include: a family driving at night near Colchester spotting a white Sasquatch in the snow; a retired nurse in Eden sees a Bigfoot walking on her property one sunny morning; a family staying at their remote cabin in the woods of Morrisville hear terrifying scream - and then an even more frightening creature; and a man and his family in the woods looking for a Christmas Tree find large, fresh footprints in the snow - but no person was around to make them. Last weekend, I was back in one of my favorite places, Bantam Lake, in Litchfield, Connecticut. We were there to go to Robin Hood's Medieval Faire in Harwinton, and to camp at Point Folly. But anytime I'm in Bantam, my thoughts always turn to UFO sightings in the area, and the infamous UFO crash at Bantam Lake in 2012. While many Bigfoot sightings can make for very compelling witness testimony, there are always alleged encounters with the creature that are much less so. Sometimes the Sasquatch is seen at a great distance, sometimes it closely resembles a bear, and on rare occasions, a case can be made for it simply being a man in a gorilla suit. For our 200th episode, I'm examining some Bigfoot sightings that probably weren't actually Bigfoot. I look at a collection of stories from Maine, West Virginia, New Jersey, Georgia, Missouri, and Ohio, where the creature that was seen doesn't really resemble the Bigfoot we all know and love. I just got back from a trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where we stayed at the historic Rose Farm. This site, comprised of the farm, the legendary Wheatfield, and Rose Woods, saw some of the fiercest fighting of the battle on July 2nd, 1863. Thousands of men were wounded and died here, and hundreds were buried on the Wheatfield, Rose Farm, and even right outside the Rose House itself. After the battle, the house remained a field hospital for wounded soldiers. Due to all the death and tragedy that happened there, many people believe the area to be haunted by the spirits of the soldiers who lost their lives there. In this episode, I recount some of my own spooky encounters at Gettysburg, including experiences at the Rose Farm, some stories related to me by other visitors, and accounts of paranormal activity people have reported online. The Pine Barrens of New Jersey are home to one of cryptozoology's most famous cryptids, the Jersey Devil. But the Pinelands are also home to many other creepy legends and folklore, including ghost stories, UFO sightings, and of course, Bigfoot. Central New York state is no stranger to UFO sightings, and this week I'm looking at reports from the Mohawk Valley Region and Ostego County. The Mohawk River cuts in between the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, and Ostego County sits just south of the river. It's time for another paranormal campfire chat! This trip, Josh and I camped at Basswood Pond State Forest in Otsego County, New York. Part of the Mohawk Valley region of New York State, Basswood Pond is a small, man-made body of water in a secluded park. While not as wild or remote as some of our past trips to the Adirondacks, we were still pretty isolated from the dreaded civilization.
