lay an egg
Lay an egg
lay an egg = flop, bomb(动词,爆炸,彻底失败;名词,炸弹,彻底的失败)
Lay an egg 是从什么时候开始表示失败的现在还不太确定,有一个说法是,一次世界大战的时候," to lay an egg " 指" to drop a bomb(投下炸弹)",那时有了比喻意:to lay an egg = to bomb(爆炸)。 That film is the bomb!
Mike
We really laid an egg last night and lost the game 7–0(seven to nil).
The professor tried to be funny, but he laid an egg.

wild-goose chase
