柯林斯词典是这么定义NFT的：

一种独特的数字证书，在区块链中注册，用于记录艺术品或收藏品等资产的所有权。

也就是说，NFT储存于区块链（blockchain）上，是独特数码证明，提供某一项资产的特定拥有权。

这个“资产”以数码资产为主，如，数码艺术品。

如果是房子，我有房产证，通常就可以证明我拥有它。

可是数码作品很容易被复制，又很难证明其所有权，所以就需要NFT。

NFT到底是怎么独特呢？

NFT含有独一无二的识别码、目前拥有者的区块链地址、数码艺术品的资料（元数据）、拥有权历史，等等。因为区块链交易完全透明，（NFT和）所有相关信息都可以公开查阅，而且不能被随意更改或删除，也就是出处准确并且可以验证，如果发生了变更/交易会自动记录。

NFT最重要的特性就是：

独特，拥有唯一性，不可以交换，不可代替，同时也是不可以分割的，每一个NFT和每一个NFT的价值都不一样，这也就是“非同质化 non-fungible”的意思。

如果是两张一百块人民币，这张和那张价值一样，虽然编码不同，但也是可以互相交换，互相代替的，这就是“同质化”。

NFT的兴起是在2017年底，因为一款当时很受欢迎的虚拟养猫游戏。今年有一个很轰动的新闻，3月时，佳士得拍卖出了一幅数字艺术作品，6900万美元（售出的），是一位超现实主义数字艺术家 Beeple（Mike Winkelmann）的作品，这个价格是迄今为止活着的艺术家中所拍卖作品的第三高价。
