Today's topic is Anticipating the Time.

Since ancient times, the interpretation of Jesus' return has varied dramatically. Although the Reformers believed in Christ's literal, visible, audible, and glorious return, their understanding of this truth changed over time. Popular nineteenth-century preachers taught that Christ would come to establish His kingdom on earth and usher in 1,000 years of peace. This led to spiritual lethargy and an apathetic commitment to spiritual values. 

Even regarding the first coming of Christ, the Jews did not understand correctly, for they expected that He would come as a conquering general who would break the yoke of Roman bondage, not One who would deliver them from the condemnation and shackles of sin. Thus, they failed to understand the manner of His coming. 

I fully believe that we are in the time of Jesus' return. At the time of the second coming of Christ. How does the Bible describe the return of Jesus? Acts 1:9 to 11 says he will return like he went up. He means in a visible, personal, and corporeal way. Revelation 1:7 says he comes with the clouds, and every eye will see him. Even those who participated in his death. Already in Matthew 24, verses 27, then 30-31. Jesus said it would be like lightning. He will come in the clouds of heaven with power and glory and a loud trumpet.

When Christ came for the first time as a babe in Bethlehem’s manger, very few people discerned His coming. But when He comes the second time, “every eye” will see Him come. Every ear will hear the trumpet blast of His return. Every human being on earth will behold His glory. The Scriptures have made the events surrounding His return abundantly clear.

Today's topic is The Promise of His Return.

The Protestant Reformers and the pilgrims who left from Holland for the New World longed for the coming of Jesus. For them the second coming of Christ was a joyous event that they eagerly anticipated. John Wycliffe looked forward to the coming of Christ as the hope of the church. 

Calvin spoke for all the Reformers when he talked of the glorious return of Christ as “of all events most auspicious.” For faithful men and women of God, the second coming of Christ was something to be embraced! 

And over the centuries, promises like those described in John 14:1-3, where Jesus vehemently declares, I will come again or in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, and Titus 2:11-14, where Paul speaks of our blessed Hope! These and other promises of the second coming have filled the lives of Christ's followers with hope and certainty. 

See what encouraging words are on page 302 of the book The Great Controversy: “The coming of the Lord has been in all ages the hope of His true followers. The Saviour’s parting promise upon Olivet that He would come again, lighted up the future for His disciples, filling their hearts with joy and hope that sorrow could not quench nor trials dim. Amid suffering and persecution, the ‘appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ’ was the ‘blessed hope.’ according to Titus 2:13. 

When the Thessalonian Christians were filled with grief as they buried their loved ones, who had hoped to live to witness the coming of the Lord, Paul, their teacher, pointed them to the resurrection, to take place at the Saviour’s advent. Then the dead in Christ should rise, and together with the living be caught up to meet the Lord in the air.

Let's start with the verse to memorize during the week, Isaiah 25:9. 

"It will be said on that day,

    "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us.

    This is the Lord; we have waited for him;

    let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation."." 

The second coming of Jesus is one of the central themes of Scripture. It is a golden thread that runs through the Bible's sacred pages. One scholar has estimated that there are 1,845 references to Christ's second coming in the Old Testament. In the 260 chapters of the New Testament, there are more than 300 references to the return of Christ. One in every 25 verses mentions it. Twenty-three of the 27 New Testament books refer to this great event. 

After the Reformation in Europe foundered and was hampered by divisions and strife, Protestantism took root in the New World, including the United States, where many sought to pick up the mantle of truth, including the truth about the Second Coming.

Among them was a Baptist farmer named William Miller. From his study of the Bible, he believed that Jesus was coming soon, even in his lifetime, and then began preaching that message. Though facing great disappointment, Miller started a movement that opened up to many people Bible truths that remain relevant to this day. 

Jesus is coming, but not as at His first advent, a babe in Bethlehem; not as He rode into Jerusalem when the disciples praised God with a loud voice and cried, "Hosanna"; but in the glory of the Father and with all the retinue of holy angels to escort Him on His way to earth. 

All heaven will be emptied of the angels, while the waiting saints will be looking for Him and gazing into heaven, as were the men of Galilee when He ascended from the Mount of Olivet. Then only those who are holy, those who have followed the meek Pattern thoroughly, will with rapturous joy exclaim as they behold Him, "Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us.". Isaías 25:9. 

In this week's lesson, we will examine why the second coming of Christ has filled the hearts of believers with joy through the centuries and how we can be ready for that great event.

Let's start with the verse memorized during the week that is in Isaiah, chapter 40, verse 8, and says. The grass withers, and the flower fades, but God's word stands forever. Over the centuries, the Bible has been dissected, doubted, and discarded. She was chained in monasteries, torn apart, and burned in public squares. Believers were ridiculed, arrested, and martyred. However, the word of God prevailed.  
On Sunday, dealing with the 2 witnesses who represent the Old and New Testaments, we learned that whoever rejects the Old Testament rejects Jesus' guidance. It's that simple! Because Jesus recommended examining the scriptures when there was only the Old Testament.  
On Monday, we learned that the two witnesses will prophesy for 1260 days in sackcloth. According to Revelation 11, verse 3. This is the same period of the 42 months during which the Gentiles, who oppose the truth, would trample the Holy City, Revelation 11:2. God's enemies trample divine truth for 1260 days, 42 months, times 30, that's 1260. Each day symbolizes a year, and the two witnesses prophesy against them during this period. Revelation 12:6 speaks of 1260 days of persecution of God's people. Revelation 12:14 speaks of a time, times, and half a time. Revelation 13:5 speaks of the 42 months that are mentioned in Revelation 11:2 and 3, along with the 1260 days. All of these prophecies describe different aspects of the same time period.

On Tuesday, we saw that the bodies of the witnesses, the 2 witnesses, would not be buried for 3 and a half days, Revelation 11:9, that is, 3 and a half literal years. Atheism was at its height in the French Revolution for about 3 and a half years. This period extended from November 26, 1793, when a Paris decree abolished religion, until June 16, 1797, when the French government removed its restrictive religious laws. The Bible was banned, persecuted, and burned. And all of this is in history, for our knowledge, because prophecies never fail.

On Wednesday, we learned about the resurrection of the 2 witnesses, the resurrection of the bible. In unique words, at the end of the French Revolution, whatever Bible was burned in public squares seemed to be resurrected and with great power to reach the whole world. Since France made war on God's Two Witnesses, they have been honored as never before. In 1804, the British and Foreign Bible Society was organized. Similar organizations followed with numerous branches on the European continent. In 1816, the American Bible Society was founded. Interesting that the great Voltaire, famous for his criticism of Christianity, once said. I'm tired of hearing that 12 men established the Christian religion. I will prove that it only takes one man to destroy it. It has been over 200 years since Voltaire died, and Christianity continues. And yesterday, we saw that the great conflict between Christ and Satan will end with Christ completely defeating the powers of hell. The Kingdom of God will triumph, and sin will be eradicated forever from the universe. Revelation 11 begins with Satan's attempt to destroy the Christian faith and eradicate belief in God through the French Revolution. But the chapter ends with the triumph of the Kingdom of God over the principalities and powers of evil. The chapter ends with the Victory of Christ and his servants. The kingdoms of the world become our victorious lord. Evil is defeated. Jesus wins. Satan loses. Justice triumphs, and truth reigns.

Today's topic is Truth Triumphant.

Revelation 11 should be studied much more carefully. Very important themes are present in this chapter. It provides encouragement to all who go through fiery trials for the cause of Christ and His truth. The great controversy between Christ and Satan will end with Christ completely defeating the powers of hell. God’s kingdom will triumph over evil, and sin will be eradicated forever from the universe. Revelation 11 begins with Satan’s attempt through the French Revolution to destroy the Christian faith and eradicate belief in God, but the chapter ends with the triumph of God’s kingdom over the principalities and powers of evil.

 Evil is defeated. Jesus wins, and Satan loses. Righteousness triumphs. Truth reigns. We would do well to heed the following instruction: “Whatever is built upon the authority of man will be overthrown, but that which is founded upon the rock of God’s immutable word shall stand forever.”

One such person was William Carey, who traveled to India and translated the Bible into dozens of local dialects. Propelled by the power of the Bible, missionaries were sent worldwide.

In unique words, at the end of the French Revolution, the Bible that had been burned in public squares was resurrected with great power to reach the whole world. When the British Biblical Society was formed, the Bible had already been printed and was circulating in 50 languages. Since then, it has been translated into more than 2000 languages ​​and dialects. It's interesting what the great Voltaire, famous for his criticisms of Christianity, once said: ‘I am weary of hearing people repeat that twelve men established the Christian religion. I will prove that one man may suffice to overthrow it.’

It has been more than 200 years since Voltaire died. And Christianity continues!
