Let's start with the verse to memorize for the week, which is in Psalm 119:11 and says: “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.”
The meaning is to internalize the word of God in the heart and mind. Embrace the word of God within us. The Protestant reformers had something the 21st century desperately needed: a purpose for life. Nowadays, it is common to find people without a purpose in life. Their beliefs are superficial; few things matter to them, and they have nothing worth dying or living for.
But the Protestant Reformation's men, women, and children were radically different. They had an abiding purpose worth living for.
On Sunday, we saw that the reformers will fill their minds with the Scriptures. They lived for the word, and many died for it. He was not a casual, complacent, careless Christian. They knew that without the power of the word, they would not resist evil. The Bible was the basis of the reformers' faith and the essence of their teachings.
On Monday, we saw William Tyndale's example of courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Tyndale's greatest wish was to give England an accurate and readable translation of the Bible. He then decided to translate the Bible from the original languages and correct some errors in Wycliffe's translation from about 140 years earlier. Tyndale was also arrested and tried. Many of his Bible translations that were printed in Worms, Germany, were confiscated and publicly burned. His trial took place in Belgium in 1536, after Christ. He was found guilty of heresy and sentenced to the stake.
On Tuesday, we saw that true knowledge of the Bible can only be obtained with the help of God the Holy Spirit, through whom the word was given. We must be enlightened by studying the word of God and inspired by transmitting its teachings, whether in preaching or in any other situation; preaching the word of God will be useless without the presence and continuous help of the Holy Spirit. For he is the only effectual teacher of divine truth. Only when the truth reaches the heart accompanied by the spirit does it renew consciousness and transform life.
On Wednesday, we saw that God offers salvation as a gift. The Holy Spirit leads us to accept by faith what Christ offered through his death on the Cross of Calvary. Jesus, the Divine Son of God, offered His perfect life to atone for our sins. Of course, divine justice demands obedience. And the perfect life of Christ is in the place of our imperfection.
And yesterday, we learned that the reformers studied the word systematically to discover more truths.
Conclude this week's lesson with a thought from the book Steps to Christ, which is on page 52 and says:
“None are so sinful that they cannot find strength, purity, and righteousness in Jesus, who died for them. He is waiting to strip them of their garments stained and polluted with sin, and to put upon them the white robes of righteousness; He bids them live and not die.”
