  • Mantra, Raised Gardens, Preservatives, Self Love

It's Mantra Monday with Autumn Connolly. Autumn is a wealth of information, and we cover a lot today; raised garden beds, the impact of food preservatives on the body and manifesting self love. And, we always love hearing Connolly sing one of her amazing mantras. Today's is meant to Balance Brain Hemispheres.

    MANTRA TO BALANCE BRAIN HEMISPHERES
We're getting the week started right with a mantra. Follow along, or bookmark and return any time you need a boost. The mantra is GOBINDAY MUKANDAY (Pronounced: GO-BIN-DAY MOO-KAHN-DAY)
This means "Destroying, creating, nameless, desireless". Singing this chant purifies your magnetic field, eliminates karmic blocks and brings compassion and patience.
We're learning about raised garden beds next. These are gardens made from wood or steel that are higher off the ground than a traditional garden. A standard size is around 6' x 2'. They're super practical because you can choose pre-fertilized soil, or just use compost. You can purchase a raised bed at any home store. Or, she layers the bottom with rocks and branches for drainage, then compost and straw. Her garden is over two feet off the ground, which helps to keep animals out. Listen to the interview for other tips from Autumn on making your own raised garden.
IMPACT OF FOOD PRESERVATIVES ON THE BODY
Connolly says that preservatives wreak havoc on our system. They preserve food because they are anti-bacterial, meaning they kill the bacteria that make food go bad. When you ingest them, you are killing off bad bacteria, but you're also killing your good gut bacteria that helps overall immunity. Preservatives cause inflammation in the body, which can affect health in a number of ways. If you eat prepackaged snack foods every now and then, Connolly says that moderation is OK.
Sadly, the foods with the most preservatives are marketed to children. These foods are quick and easy, but the negative health effects should outweigh convenience. There are several natural preservatives like salt, sugar, lemon juice and vinegar. Look for packaged foods with these types of natural preservatives. Just read the label to see what they use. The EWG is an amazing resource. Check our their informative list of preservatives to avoid.

    HOW TO MANIFEST SELF LOVE
What is self love? It's when you love yourself completely, mistakes and flaws included. To help with self love and self acceptance, Connolly repeats the same mantra every morning. She says it's an easy way to get in a place of self-love. Repeat this mantra every morning or when you've had a bad day or just aren't feeling your best.

I am happy and complete within me.
Autumn Connolly lives in the sky islands of Arizona with her three kiddos and animal babies. She is the creator of Anvil Traditional Healing, a company dedicated to restoring microbiome health through diet. Follow Autumn on Instagram @AnvilTraditionalHealing.  Stay tuned! We'll have another mantra from Autumn in the coming weeks.

  • SPCA, U.S. “Wet Markets” and At-Home Gardens

Hello One Life Radio listeners! Thank you to our guests, Maura Davies of the SPCA of Texas, Courtney Garza of VEGWORLD Magazine and Stephanie Toups for an awesome Friday show.
    Pet Separation Anxiety
Maura Davies says we need to be proactive preparing our pets for when we go back to work. Is easy for dogs and cats to get separation anxiety when owners aren't home. With the COVID-19 quarantine, our pets have had the times of their lives hanging out with us, but it may be hard for them to adjust to the new schedule. You may see this through excessive parking, crying, chewing or relieving themselves where they're not supposed to. Davis says to please be patient and start training your animal now. Leave for a little bit each day and see how your pet reacts. lf they seem OK, stay away a little longer next time. Listen to the full interview for more tips from Maura, or this great article from People Magazine.
Ending Wet Markets in New York
Next, Courtney Garza, CEO of VEGWORLD Magazine, sites an article from their latest issue regarding "Wet Markets" in NYC. We've heard of these markets, but in China, not New York. Vendors sell animals, both dead and alive,  for human consumption, without following health regulations. The term "wet market" comes from the unsanitary amount of blood, feces and urine from these animals that cover the ground.

Carissa Kranz, founding attorney for the Law Offices of Carissa Kranz, is fighting to ban wet markets in New York, where there are currently over 80 “wet markets” according to PETA.  Kranz calls these unregulated slaughterhouses “hotbeds for contagion,” and is deeply concerned that in the midst of a global pandemic, thousands of these operations are still active from Illinois to California.

Read the full article on VEGWORLD, and listen to the podcast to hear how you can help end these markets.
How to Start an At-Home Garden
Stephanie Toups joins us to give listeners the building blocks they need to start an at-home garden. You may be able to just start digging in your backyard, but Toups says to get the soil tested and also fertilize with compost before planting. Listen to the podcast for her plant recommendations for keeping mosquitos away this summer!

  • Beta-Glucans, Compound & Isolation Workouts

Beta-Glucans - What are they, and Why do We Need them?
Today we’re talking about Beta-Glucans with Dr. Jen Myers. Myers is a Doctor of Natural Medicine, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and a Certified Genomics/Nutrigenetic Specialist. She is also a formulator for Sunwarrior plant-based proteins.

Beta-glucans are sugars that are found in the cell walls of mushrooms and plants such as oats and barley.  They are used to treat high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, HIV/AIDS, high blood pressure, and even canker sores. They are a soluble fiber, which is extremely beneficial to digestion and can even prevent fat absorption.

Our bodies don't make Beta Glucan, so we need to include certain foods or supplements in our diets to reap the benefits of this fiber. Dr. Myers sites Sunwarrior Protein Lean as well as several types of medicinal mushrooms as two of the highest sources of beta-glucans.

Myers says that our body can only benefit from taking this amazing natural fiber, so no downside!

    Compound vs. Isolation Workouts
Cody Myler, also known as the Keto Cowboy, is a health & fitness expert, trainer, instructor and business owner. Myler explains the differences of compound and isolation workouts today. They are somewhat self explanatory; a compound workout uses several muscles at the same time, while an isolation workout works a specific muscle.

Knowing the difference is important, though. If you’re striving for really ripped muscles, go with isolation exercises like curls. But, if you want to be toned without looking too muscular, do mostly compound movements.  If you just want to get in shape, Myler recommends 50-60% compound exercise and the rest isolation.

Bernadette reminds us to include cardio in our workouts as well. Myler says timing is everything in regard to cardio. If you want to lose weight, do your cardio before weight training. If you want muscle, do cardio afterwards.  Myler’s tip – if you can do cardio and talk on the phone at the same time, you’re not working hard enough.

Listen to the full interview to hear Cody’s go-to exercise to get fit fast and more tips for adding compound and isolation exercises to your overall program.

  • Fat Loss vs. Weight Loss, Vegan Kitchen Must-Haves

    Fat Loss vs. Weight Loss
Are you a fat loss thinker or a weight loss thinker? Tina Bernet says there's a difference between measuring fat loss and weight loss.  If you only count calories and go by the number on the scale, you may be doing more harm than good. Bernet says calories shouldn’t be your main focus.

When you’re eating the right foods, you can eat more calories, but still lose weight. A donut has the same amount of calories as a chicken breast, but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to eat. To build muscle mass, you need proteins and amino acids, not empty calories.  Consider what you're eating and when you're eating it. For instance, eating protein and fat at breakfast will keep you feeling full into the afternoon. Carbs, found in cereals and breads, will wear off quickly.  You'll be hungry soon, or suffer carb crash and fall asleep at your desk. Forget the scale and stop counting calories. Click here to get more of Tina's advice on losing weight the right way.
    Vegan Kitchen "Must-Haves"
Chef Gabrielle Reyes, owner of One Great Vegan, joins us with her advice for stocking a vegan pantry.

Here's a sample of her "must-have" items for a vegan or plant-based kitchen:

    * chickpeas (use the juice called Aquafaba for an egg substitute!)
    * sweet potatoes
    * quinoa
    * onion
    * veggie broth
    * coconut oil (or your favorite oil)
    * nutritional yeast
    * Celery juice (drink in the morning for energy throughout the day)

Reyes says that if you begin every meal with some oil and onions, the inspiration will come and finish the rest. In other words, don't overthink it, have fun and sing while you cook!

Be sure and check out Reyes' weekly musical cooking show, “The Colorful Home Cooking Show”, where she shares her favorite recipes and tips to create vibrant dishes through music and song. • Autumn Connolly, Colloidal Silver, Castor Oil & Chanting

Before we talk with Autumn Connolly, Bernadette opens the show with an article from Consumer Reports Magazine on plastics. The article suggests that we reheat foods on the stove, not in the microwave. And, never use plastic in the microwave. Also drink tap water over store-bought plastic water bottles, and dust and vacuum regularly.

One of our all-time favorite One Life Radio guests is back, Autumn Connolly. Today she's talking about colloidal silver, castor oil and the history of chanting. She starts us off with a quote about meditation and then goes into the benefits of colloidal silver, a natural way to lower the body’s bacterial load. It's a natural antibiotic because it's anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory. Colloidal silver is a good topical for cuts and scrapes. You can now find colloidal silver patches for wounds in most natural grocery stores. But, be sure to follow the recommended dose at all times. And, buy only from reputable companies, since it's not a product monitored by the FDA. Connolly also says to make sure you're purchasing colloidal silver and not ionic silver. She tells us the difference in the podcast.

Castor oil is making a comeback! Connolly says it has so many benefits and everyone should have some in their cabinet. Castor oil is an anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial oil. It even works to regrow hair. Use it on your eyebrows or eyelashes or make a hair mask to help your hair grow. It’s also good for acne, insect bites, rashes and other skin irritations. Castor oil is mostly known as a laxative, but be careful if you use it for this purpose. A little goes a long way.

We discuss the benefits of daily chanting. Connolly says the word chanting comes from sanskrit word meaning “love”. It’s a tool to use when you want to change things in your life. Think of it as the earliest method of “The Law of Attraction”. Hear a live chant on the air. Save and follow along when you're needing a change in your life, or just want to step out of yourself for a minute and relax. If you have a question for Autumn Connolly, you can email her at [email protected].

    CHANT:

    OM MANI PADME HUM

    Said: Ohm manee peme hung

    Meaning:  Sanskrit mantra for compassion.

Praise for the jewel in the lotus

  • Energy Healing, MOGA and COVID-19 Testing

Happy Monday OLR listeners! Robin Perry Braun is joining us to discuss healing and energy work, Mo Brossette tells us about his new MOGA technique, and Mary Holland of Children's Health Defense updates us on COVID-19 testing. According to Braun, the virus and home quarantine is sending our bodies into “fight or flight” mode. This state of being takes energy away from our body's ability to keep us well. How do we go from fear to joy? Let the fear be a motivation to have a paradigm shift to health. Listen to Braun's interview to learn more.
How to add a Breath and Mobility Routine to Your Workout
Next, Mo Brossette joins us to talk about MOGA, a breath and mobility workout to add before or after your current fitness program. MOGA uses a number of methods including stretching, animal movements, yoga and more meant to strengthen our spine and stretch our muscles. He says we have to always think of our spine when working out. The healthier our spine, the healthier we are. When we sit, which we are doing a lot under quarantine, our spines curve, becoming more at risk for injury. Even picking up a package or a grocery bag could cause injury if we're not taking care to stretch our spine. While stretching is a preventative measure, our breath is just as important as the stretch. Do you hold your breath when doing a stretch? Practice breathing into the stretch, and this way you increase flexibility and mobility. Brossette believes that combining breath with stretching helps us to recover from a workout, boosts our immunity, relieves stress and more. The combination of breathing and stretching also aids in cell generation, blood flow and suppresses the inflammatory response. Check out one of Brossette's MOGA workouts on his youtube channel .
    COVID-19 Testing Update
Mary Holland says the US has been behind the curve on COVID-19 testing, hampering the country's ability to reopen. The testing is in the hands of the states rather than the federal government. This leads to different testing methods being used,  some of which are ineffective. Dr. Sing Hang Lee, a scientist and researcher specializing in vaccines, is recommending a proven two-phase test be used nationwide.  He expressed his findings as well as a willingness to retest inconclusive test results to both the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, to no response. Is he being censored by the FDA?

Holland believes that much of the information we read in scientific journals is misleading. She refers to the saying “absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Much of the information we read in scientific journals is paid for by corporations or pharmaceutical companies, and we need to question the validity of these studies. Holland also says hospitals are being offered financial incentives to list COVID-19 as the cause of death for patients in their care. If this is the case, we, as citizens, need to ask questions.  Listen to the podcast for more of Holland's interview regarding Dr. Lee's findings and the state of government testing. Learn more about Mary Holland and the Children's Health Defense here.

  • Food-as-Medicine and Orthorexia
Can a food-as-medicine lifestyle lead to an eating disorder? Today we're discussing Orthorexia with Diane "V." Capaldi, a.k.a. "Paleo Boss Lady".  Capaldi is an inspiration to us all. She's built her brand and her business sharing her decades-long struggle to overcome M.S., and how she overcame her illness through diet and lifestyle changes alone. But, she wants others to know that her journey to health has come with some negative side effects.

For the past nine years, Capaldi has suffered with Orthorexia and other psychological issues as a result of using food as medicine. Orthorexia is an eating disorder driven by an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating. It is common among people following an autoimmune protocol, because unlike other eating disorders, orthorexia revolves around food quality, not quantity.
Capaldi says she has struggled with orthorexia and other psychological issues using food as medicine, but she is working to find a balance. She says that no matter the path we choose for living, everything we learn is simply a template. One size does not fit all. Sticking to a certain plan, even when it has negative effects, is dangerous. You should listen to the experts, but also listen to your body. If you don't feel right about certain aspects of your health and wellness regime, it's OK to adjust accordingly. You know what is best for you. Just listen to your gut and know when to ask questions.

    V. Capaldi is an inspiration to us all. We truly appreciate her candor and honesty discussing her battle with Orthorexia and living a food-as-medicine lifestyle. • Organ Meats, Stretching
    Organ Meats
Jared Ramirez, CEO of Enviromedica, brings his expertise and knowledge to another episode of One Life Radio. Today we're discussing the benefits of organ meats and the importance of sourcing. His company, Enviromedica, has developed a line of organ meat supplements. We can get the nutritional benefits of organ meats without digging into a plate of brain, pancreas or intestine, just to name a few. I don't know about you, but I'll take an ethically sourced, fully tested food-based supplement over a plate of pancreas any day!

Ramirez explains why organ meats are so important for overall health. Our diet has evolved and changed over thousands of years, and not for the better. Our foods are over-processed and our farms are over utilized, stripping them of the vitamin-rich soil of our ancestors. It's going to take time and effort to change our current food supply system. But, it is possible to get the health benefits of our ancestral diet, even today.

Bernadette and Ramirez go on to discuss the importance of Vitamin A and D in our diets. He says that Vitamin A and D are considered "partner nutrients", meaning both are needed to protect the body from potential toxicity from the other. If you're on the current Vitamin D bandwagon, you'll want to listen to the full interview. You can also visit enviromedica.com to learn more about their organ meat supplements.
To Stretch or Not to Stretch?
Cody Myler, aka the "Keto Cowboy" wants to stretch our imagination and our muscles! Stretching pushes blood through the muscles, which gives us the sensation of relaxation while helping protect our muscles from potential injuries. But, did you know that you can be too flexible? Myler says we must find our happy medium in regard to our stretching needs. Yes, stretching can hurt, but listen to your body to know the difference between a "good" stretch and a "bad" one. And, if you're working towards a specific goal such as a body-building competition or dance routine, there are specific stretch routines designed around the goal you’re wanting to achieve.

For a general rule, Myler recommends stretching at least three times per week for 15 minutes at a time. He recommends youtube for free tutorials and routines. If you have a question for Cody, or want to learn more about his personal workout, message him on instagram @myler_flex or visit mylerflex.com.

  • Medicinal Mushrooms, The Future of Food

Hello everyone! We are excited to have Colin Stuckert, CEO of Wild Foods, discussing the power of medicinal mushrooms and Shawn Wells, @ingredientologist talking about the future of food.
    Medicinal Mushrooms
Colin Stuckert, founder of Wild Foods, is introducing us to medicinal mushrooms. Stuckert lives his life based on the “Ancestral Mindset.” He believes that by understanding our evolutionary past, we can reverse our failing health through a consciously-designed lifestyle. For Stuckert, mushrooms play a big part in his overall health routine.

Stuckert became interested in mushrooms when he started his journey living closer to nature several years ago. He gradually incorporated them in his daily routine and after realizing the amazing benefits, he introduced them into his Wild Foods product line. According to Stuckert, we’ve just scratched the surface regarding the true power of mushrooms for health. Mushrooms are adaptogens, which means they can possibly prevent illnesses by helping our bodies to adapt to our current environment. So, to get the full benefits from mushrooms, they should be included in an ongoing daily lifestyle routine.  Stuckert recommends that everyone take their time to build a well-rounded health routine specific to your individual needs. Most importantly, design a plan that you can stick to for life.

Learn about the five kinds of mushrooms that are most beneficial to our health on the podcast! You can also visit Wild Foods for a comprehensive guide to mushrooms.
    The Future of Food
Shawn Wells talks about the future of food. Bernadette sites a study indicating that a plant-based diet is healthier than most, but Wells says it's not that simple. Many factors come into play when deciding on the best overall diet plan for an individual. Wells believes that Westerners are too removed from the process of how food is made in today's society, and what these processed foods are doing to our health. Because most of us have never raised animals  to eat or grown a garden for food, we are blind to the abuse our food supply has caused to animals and the planet. We've ultimately "turned a blind eye" to the effects our food consumption is having on our health, community and planet.

Wells goes on to explain the difference between “vegan” and “plant-based” diets. You can be a vegan and eat gummy bears and drink Coca-cola on a daily basis. He says it’s not enough to just avoid animal products. We must eat nutrient-dense, plant-based foods if we're going to be healthy. This applies to everyone, no matter the diet or lifestyle each person follows.

Wells site the Paleo lifestyle, which is getting back to the way our hunter/gatherer ancestors ate as a good basis for healthy eating. Many less-industrious populations are healthier overall because they get their foods the same way they have for hundreds of years; seafood from regional waters, vegetables and fruits from local gardens and beef and poultry from local farms.

He goes on to discuss engineered superfoods, sugar, Keto, fiber and more, so listen to the interview and please subscribe to our podcast to hear his expert recommendations and advice on upcoming shows.
    Thanks from One Life Radio!

  • Full-Spectrum Hemp Defined, Complex Trauma

Happy Monday! We kick off the week with our One Life Radio in-house spiritual guru, Navee Mendoza, Ret Taylor of Ned Full-Spectrum hemp products and DeWone Bennett talking about complex trauma.
    The Spiritual Daily
Mendoza starts our week off right with a dose of The Spiritual Daily from her website of the same name. Mendoza reminds us that spirituality is a practice to be learned. You may not be feeling in touch with the world while under quarantine, but know that this is normal.  If you’re feeling restless under quarantine, it’s OK. We're all having these feelings. Try your best to stay centered. And just know that this, too, shall pass.
    Ned Full-Spectrum Hemp Products
Ret Taylor, co-founder of Ned, joins us to help us navigate through the ever-growing number of CBD and hemp offerings available. Taylor says that it's imperative to research any company you're thinking of purchasing from.  Taylor and his partner founded Ned because they wanted to offer a clean, simple and effective product line that anyone will be comfortable purchasing. The founders of Ned have set themselves apart, listening to the needs of consumers and creating products to meet those needs.   Taylor goes on to explain full-spectrum and why it's so important.

All of the Ned formulas are clean, simple and effective. So much so, you can give them to your pets.

Try Ned and let us know your feedback! Right now, all of our One Life Radio listeners get 15% off all Ned products! Just use code OLR at checkout!
    Complex Trauma
Dewone Bennett then discusses what it means to have complex trauma. Abuse over time, such as domestic violence or incest are examples of complex trauma. Sadly the abuse is usually administered by someone a person knows and trusts, such as a parent or relative, teacher or priest. Bennett says that the key to overcoming complex trauma is to talk about it.  When victims stay silent they are more likely to end up in abusive relationship, self-harm or even develop borderline personality disorder. If you have more questions for DeWone, you can contact him here.

Thanks to all of our One Life Radio listeners and our wonderful sponsors; Ned Full-Spectrum Hemp Products, Enviromedica, Sunwarrior, STS Health, Vegworld Magazine, Well Being Journal, Paleof(x) and Paleo Magazine.

    Have a great week!
